Following on from the other thread…. Which tv series did they carry on too long?

We have seen some excellent examples of shows ended in their prime that we all wanted more of - now what about the tv series that we loved… but then they carried on too long and ruined it.

Scrubs - I like to pretend the whole Med School drain just never happened

House - What were they thinking in the final season?

Killing Eve.

Yes! I loved the first series, enjoyed the second, can't remember about the third - was there a fourth? I know I bailed out on the last one as I wasn't gripped. Shame. That first series was absolutely sensational.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 29/08/2025 09:20

Pretty much any show that goes beyond three series. They always run out of ideas and have to start recycling, or jumping sharks. I only really like to watch films or miniseries now.

I don’t think any series can end at the perfect time. We’d probably want more even when given the perfect ending. Conversely, I think every show I’ve ever watched has dragged on too far.

I would say John Cleese and Connie Booth got it spot on with Fawlty Towers. Two series, every episode an absolute classic, call it a day, ignore all requests to make more, have no truck with proposals to re-make it.

The Walking Dead! The amount of spin offs are ridiculous too

wizzbitt · 29/08/2025 09:23

I stopped Always Sunny in Philadelphia after series 2. I couldn’t bear the characters. It was funny at first but they’re all so horrible and every episode is a variation of them doing something awful and getting their comeuppance. It just got boring. I just googled and it’s on its 18th season so it’s working for someone.

Bluevelvetsofa · 29/08/2025 09:23

DH and I were disappointed with the last series of Slow Horses too. The same with Bosch Legacy.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 29/08/2025 09:27

Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, after Ralph Little left

The last series of Friends was painful. But then I wouldn't have wanted them to end series 9 where they did.

Bewitched when they replaced the original Darrin

GreyPearlSatin · 29/08/2025 09:28

Buffy The Vampire Slayer. They had a beautiful ending with season 5. Although, season 6 was not bad, it made me feel sad to watch it and season 7 was an absolute shit show.

Dawson's Creek. I was so looking forward to the college years, but it was dull and I couldn't be bothered to keep watching.

Beverly Hills 90210. I got bored with it after a couple of seasons. The none of the character's story lines were of interest to me anymore.

Strawberrysummer25 · 29/08/2025 09:29

Parks and recreation, I loved this but it became unbearable after a few seasons, it went on far too long.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 29/08/2025 09:30

Prison Break should have ended after season 2. It was perfect til then. How many different prisons did they end up in?!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/08/2025 09:35

It’s not so much that “they went on too long” as it is “they completely shat the bed” with an absolutely shite last season or in Heroes case every season bar the first.

So :

Heroes
Lost
House Of Cards
Game Of Thrones

and Grey’s Anatomy once my whole family’s favourite, is like undergoing a slow and painful demise

OnePearlHelper · 29/08/2025 09:40

Prison Break for me, I gave up watching the last few seasons but really enjoyed the first few.

All the soaps, how some of these storylines get passed I have no idea, especially Hollyoaks. (I don’t watch I just see snippets when scrolling).

silkypyjamas · 29/08/2025 09:40

...And Just like That They shouldn't resurrect the characters and completely change them. Carrie's book sounds really boring!

WomanOfSteel · 29/08/2025 09:42

Heroes - although it was the writers strike what cocked it up.
Veronica Mars. So promising after the film but refused to watch the series after the ending was spoiled. Rob Thomas is a massive cunt for that and his treatment of Jason Dohring.

Yes House of Cards!!! Never the same without Kevin Spacey. Also Homeland!

There's a stage version playing in the West End which isn't very good. Just a mishmash of previously funny scenes from different episodes smashed together.

Dearg · 29/08/2025 09:48

Pretty much any ‘reality’ or ‘ Lifestyle’ show the BBC makes or commissionsplus ongoing dramas

Homes under the Hammer
Antiques Road Show
Bargain Hunt
Escape to the Country
Masterchef
Strictly
Eastenders
Dr Who
Shetland, sadly.
Pointless
Every quiz show on a Saturday evening

There will be more, but that’s what comes to mind.

Knowsley · 29/08/2025 09:51

The Christmas specials of successful shows that have finished are usually embarrassingly bad.

I was a huge fan of Brookside but stopped watching it in the late 1990s.
I think Jacqui Dixon was pregnant when I last watched it.

medievalpenny · 29/08/2025 09:52

Call the Midwife

Callmecordelia · 29/08/2025 09:53

The Netflix gilmore girls reboot shouldn't have happened.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/08/2025 10:03

Sons of Anarchy

Darragon · 29/08/2025 10:04

Babylon 5. That last series was painful.
Xena Warrior Princess should have stopped before all the weird nonsense with Gabrielle's baby etc when it was just a fun romp through semi-history with swords.
Doctor Who should have packed it in a long time ago. It's been limping on life support for so long that IDK where they should have called time of death.

This one is extremely controversial: Buffy should have called it quits after the end of season 3. It just got weird and convoluted after that. If they needed another season, they should have proceeded directly to season 6, cut all the weirdness and just left the good bits like Once More With Feeling, then left it at that. I love Michelle Trachtenberg but OMFG that was the most implausible storyline.

And programmes that are dead should stay dead! No Red Dwarf resurrection, no Doctor Who resurrection, no Gilmore Girls resurrection, it's all utter shyte.

TidyDancer · 29/08/2025 10:47

The one that immediately came to mind is Sex Education. Series 4 was absolute shite. It was all work performative bollocks with new characters we were I’m assuming supposed to give a shit about but I can’t see how or why anyone actually would.

PlioTalk · 29/08/2025 10:52

Benidorm. It went to absolute shit as soon as the Garveys were written out.

The Royle Family, which I hate saying as I love it so much. It should've ended with The Queen of Sheba. I really didn't like how Dave went from being a perfectly ordinary cheeky chappie, to a complete mouth-breather.

Silverbirchleaf · 29/08/2025 10:55

Kingsleadhat · 29/08/2025 09:08

The final speech was nice but I thought it was crappy of them to make Penny have a baby when she'd had a whole episode establishing that she didn't want kids

I think that was linking back to an early episode, where Leonard said something along the lines that their children will be beautiful and clever.
