Are ALL home printers complete bastards?

As in, really unreliable, expensive and utterly contemptible temperamental twats?

We've had three.
All "good" brands - HP, Epson etc, and they've all been absolutely useless.
Only print come alive when they feel like it.
Refuses to connect to the WiFi.
Always running out of ink (Like, how???? When you've refused to print a damn thing ever?!)
Not even wanting to print out loads. It's just the odd thing for DCs school work now and then.

Just wondering if I'm missing something here, and all you wonderful MNs are in some secret club, and actually know of the Holy Grail of home printers?

Share please? 🙏

Do you really need a printer ?

Local shop - 1 minute walk - has a small printer that you can plug a USB stick into and print something off (presumably it has to be a PDF ?).

And the last hard copy I needed (for the DWP, as it turns out) I was able to upload the document to a site that printed and posted it for peanuts.

When I started in Computer Studies (i.e. before it became "IT") I did wonder how the "paperless office" was supposed to work when the very first accessory you plugged into a computer - before even a modem - was a printer.

Get laser printers. They are relatively cheap
now, especially a simple b&w one. Still get WiFi connection issues but all the other problems with shitty ink jets go away. So much better.

StJulian2023 · 28/08/2025 14:38

It amazes me just how bad they are - I mean, we’ve put people into space and mapped the human genome, but no one can create a reliable home printer

WestwardHo1 · 28/08/2025 14:46

Yes. Yes they are.

whirlyhead · 28/08/2025 14:46

My wifi HP laser jet printer is about 7 years old and just… works! It scans, it copies, it chunters cheerfully to itself, and every time it prints for me I give it a pat and whisper, thank you, I appreciate all your work.

It doesn’t behave so well for my partner, probably because he doesn’t say thank you to it!

LurcherMumma · 28/08/2025 14:47

I have previously worked in printing and can confirm they are all dicks.

Laser jets are awesome. I had the same old Samsung printer for about 10 years on the same cartridge and it never let me down. I only replaced it with an HP when I had to update my laptops and it stopped working with them.

The HP is rock solid and I can print from desktop, laptop and phone with no issues.

I don't know why anyone would ever buy an inkjet. Unless you print photos on to photo paper every day they're a complete waste of time and dry out in days.

Notthisagainyouidiot · 28/08/2025 14:53

Yes. It's the household item most likely to be threatened with launching out the window.

Fluffyowl00 · 28/08/2025 14:53

After my last home printer caused me so much rage I thought I was seriously harming my blood pressure, I bought the same one we used at work:

18 months on I’m still delighted. And still using the same toner/drum. Works out the same as using a new print cartridge every time you went to print something ‘printer out
of ink’ ‘printer out of cyan ink do we can’t print this B&W document you need for tomorrow’😡🤬

LittleBitofBread · 28/08/2025 14:54

Yes, mine's deranged.

WeAreExperiencingHigherNumberOfCallsThanUsual · 28/08/2025 14:56

That's why I got simple usb no wifi laser one 😁

DeathMetalMum · 28/08/2025 14:58

All printers are complete bastards.

Our printers in work are decent laser printers. They still send me over the edge often. One of the three regularly needs the drum re-setting until it is happy to print again (I seem to bee the only one capable of using google to work out how to fix it). The others don't ever need this- but have their own issues.

CloseBlueGreen · 28/08/2025 15:00

HP printer, can scan and copy. It does have quirks.
I used the HP printer app to get it to work, from iPhone or iPad.
I subscribe to their iink , which sends out larger tanks of ink, rather than try and find them in a shop.

It can be a pain, so I link it up with a USB cable sometimes, to my laptop
But I can use the air printer drivers for IPad and iPhone successfully.

Had this one a number of years too, so perseverance.

A recent print job, involved me, printing , switching it off at the wall, and printing the next section, about 8 times, as it couldn’t cope.

So it does have quirky features. But it’s been the most successful one we had, except for a black laser printer ( the toner was too expensive, but that was years ago)

You need the correct printer driver for it downloaded to your devices, and the HP printing app. HP Smart.

This meme springs to mind...

CloseBlueGreen · 28/08/2025 15:03

Common theme seems to be a black laser printer, and I think I’ve used that aforementioned Brother one too…so there’s another recommendation.

mumda · 28/08/2025 15:05

Bought a mono laser about early 2000s and it's amazing.
I bought my dad a laser printer too. They weren't expensive really.
I have a colour laser too now which does duplex properly without making me want to throw it out of the window.
I do work from home though so have room in my office for them. They're a bit bigger than an inkjet.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 28/08/2025 15:06

Printers are like horses and wolves, they can smell your fear 😐

Pastit12 · 28/08/2025 15:06

Agree don’t use mine often but say say a silent prayer before each use and my husband usually decamps to another room 😂
The words you will need to print a label fill me with rage and dread

Messyandconceited · 28/08/2025 15:09

Yes, along with all Henry hoovers, all utter, utter bastards!

Printing from phones and iPads? My printer could never. The formatting goes WILD when asked to print from anything other than a Microsoft product.

Velvian · 28/08/2025 15:10

Yes we have the HP Envy. We are filled with envy for people whose printers actually print stuff.

It will do it if you stand on your head, approach from behind with the wind in a north easterly direction. 😅

Messyandconceited · 28/08/2025 15:09

Yes, along with all Henry hoovers, all utter, utter bastards!

Those smug little c*nts. Always get stuck around corners, flip over and then just grin at you, stupidly. Then trying to store it with that anaconda-esque hose that attacks every chance it gets. I had to give mine away for fear of being carted off.

curious79 · 28/08/2025 15:12

I’ve got a laser printer that seems brilliant and keeps on going but I have a colour printer in another part of the house and I just can’t get it to connect to the new wifi
printers definitely are bastards
