Are you blackberrying?

They are excellent this year. Collected enough for about 4 crumbles this evening. But no one else out picking them…. Is it an old fashioned thing?

We are, but we have an allotment! ive made quite a few apple & blackberry crumbles 😋

LilyCanna · 27/08/2025 07:25

I’m in London and the best blackberries here were late July! Climate change…

jawsnsharks · 27/08/2025 07:25

Thought about it then remembered the huge bag clogging up the bottom drawer of the freezer from last year's picking. Must use the darn things!

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 27/08/2025 07:26

Definitely! Made jam, crumble and a bramble brandy liqueur already!

QforCucumber · 27/08/2025 07:26

I took the kids on a bike ride yesterday and we got a good tub full (although they also ate a LOT too)

they’re over the moon!

Ours were lovely a few weeks ago but are now weird.
The bushes smell like wine but the berries themselves are not really juicy and they don't separate properly from the bushes (also allotment) must be dehydrated.
I've been leaving them for the birds and beasties.

Same! Ours have all been and gone already

FusionChefGeoff · 27/08/2025 07:28

Ours were all done a few weeks ago - tried yesterday but all shrivelled and gone nkw

SaltAirAndTheRust · 27/08/2025 07:28

I’m hoping there will still be some about when I get home from holiday. I want to try and make some apple and blackberry muffins!

user1476613140 · 27/08/2025 07:28

Hoping to get out today and pick some.

TsunamiSurfer · 27/08/2025 07:29

I do this every year, takes me back to childhood and I now love doing it with my own kids although most of the time I find it winds up a solo activity 😂

Also feels like a “mindfulness” activity, bar the odd scratch.

I’ve noticed the same - absolutely loads about this year.

Imagineallthepuppies · 27/08/2025 07:29

We have lots in the garden and lane. We get a bit tired of them tbh!

Imagineallthepuppies · 27/08/2025 07:30

Oh and we get walkers coming up our lane for berries (which we obviously welcome!).

user1476613140 · 27/08/2025 07:30

And yes, I am usually the only one in my local area out picking the brambles. I have a few ice cream tubs that I go out with.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/08/2025 07:30

In the South. Had an amazing crop on our street and garden this year but it peaked a month ago. Had blackberries on our cereal every day for about 6 weeks.
We always pick them.

OxfordInkling · 27/08/2025 07:30

I’ve got my own bushes now, so don’t need to go far. But ours came in a few weeks ago - they’re essentially done now. Made quite a few crumbles.

citygirl77 · 27/08/2025 07:31

It’s been a bumper year. We have loads of blackberries in the hedge at the bottom of the garden. Our plum tree is laden with gorgeous plums and our apple trees are swamped with apples. My husband is taking lots of produce into work every day and we are literally giving loads away.

ConflictofInterest · 27/08/2025 07:32

Yes but a few weeks ago, we got nearly 5kg in one picking. They've mostly gone over now where I am. It was elderberry picking this weekend. Everything is weirdly early but there's so many berries. I'm keeping an eye on the rose hips ripening now.

ExcellentDesign · 27/08/2025 07:32

I've picked tons this year but they are more or less over here now. Got a few more yesterday but they peaked about a month ago here. I keep yogurt tubs in my car and the allotment as well as at home so I am always prepared.

Chriskeela · 27/08/2025 07:33

London ones are already dry and shrivelled up, sadly. I noticed they were great in Wales a couple of weeks ago but we were in a hotel so I couldn't have stored even if I had picked.

ThePoshUns · 27/08/2025 07:33

I did a few weeks ago but they are all dried out on the bush now. None got really big either.

PersephoneParlormaid · 27/08/2025 07:34

Yes, but they have gone over now near me.

grafittiartist · 27/08/2025 07:35

Got loads- made lots of jam.
mostly over now.
there are lots of elderberries now though- but I’m not sure what to do with those!

igivein · 27/08/2025 07:36

I have been for jam making. Saw one guy from my village out picking when I was on Sunday, but that's all. It's such a shame because there's millions of them and they're free!
@ConflictofInterest what do you do with the rose hips? I know there's rose hip syrup, which I wouldn't use, what else can I do with them?

ConflictofInterest · 27/08/2025 07:49

@igivein yes I do make a syrup up to drink for winter cordial and to put on yoghurt etc. I also dry them for tea as I make my own teas.
