Would you consider it unusual for a woman in her 40s not to be on Tiktok or Instagram?

I am 46 and I have never used Tiktok. I have looked at Instagram a couple of times but never registered on it. I have always thought it was a bit naff. Yet I was told yesterday by someone that it's "unusual" not to be on either of them. I've always thought Tiktok was mostly for people in their 20s and below, and Insta is mostly for under-30s. What are your thoughts MN?

Lafufufu · 27/08/2025 06:08

I'm not on it for a few reasons.
You might be in the minority but imo its not a bad cohort...

Mumdiva99 · 27/08/2025 06:09

I am a bit older than you. I have looked at instagram a few times as school put pictures on there.
I have only been on tiktok when I was researching it's use as a social media tool and once to buy loo roll - my kids helped!
I spend too many wasted hours on Mumsnet and FB to need any more rubbish distraction in my life.

RampantIvy · 27/08/2025 06:11

No. Not at all.

OhDorWheresthesalad · 27/08/2025 06:12

I'm not on either, I still haven't figured out what the point of them are.

Thiscouldberotterdam · 27/08/2025 06:12

Im 40 and dont have either or facebook. Dont feel as though I'm doing myself a disservice. I can procrastinate enough on here and if im honest I dont get the appeal for them.

21ZIGGY · 27/08/2025 06:13

Im in my 40s and on both. I dont post on tiktok but i follow things i like such as skincare. But i think each to their own. If its not for you its not for you. What i dont like is people who wear not being on them as a badge of honour and insult people who are ( not saying thats what you are doing here)

IfWeMakeItThroughTheEyeOfTheStorm · 27/08/2025 06:16

I’ve got accounts on both but only to follow people, I don’t post anything. I mainly use them to follow musicians, see funny animal stuff and follow stuff do to with my hobby. Most of my friends, (also in their 40s) and my kids who are teens and young adults, use them in a similar way.

pinkbackground · 27/08/2025 06:18

No. I’m not on them either.

zaazaazoom · 27/08/2025 06:19

No. Its a load of mind soup.

Thefuture2025 · 27/08/2025 06:21

Me neither, I just don't need that.

Clumsycorvid · 27/08/2025 06:22

I have only ever used Tiktok for cat videos! Stopped using it recently.

I'm 31 now and even stopped using Facebook at 28.

Clingingontosummer · 27/08/2025 06:22

I wouldn’t consider it unusual, but it might be.

TyroleanKnockabout · 27/08/2025 06:23

I’m not on either and I’m 25. MN has enough procrastination material for me!

EveryDayisFriday · 27/08/2025 06:23

I'm on tiktok but don't post anything, it's a time black hole. Don't go on it if you value your free time.

I do love instagram and have a few accounts, only post a couple of times a year on my personal insta. I use my travel one much more, posting anonymous photos of interesting places I've been to and following others travel insta acs. My weight loss account is private with no followers but details my 5st weight loss in pictures, I follow weight loss, style and health acs for inspiration. The different acs keep the algorithms separate.

Iocainepowder · 27/08/2025 06:24

I’m late 30s and not on either. Don’t need to waste more of my day doomscrolling.

I only use fb for local groups, such as a local freecycle group.

Devilsmommy · 27/08/2025 06:25

I'm 39 and have never been on either of them. There are far more interesting things on the internet than all that vapid shit

RandomlyGeneratedTriad · 27/08/2025 06:25

I'm older than you, OP, but I'm not on either of them. I think that TikTok came along late enough for it to be already evident (from my experience of other platforms) that it would just become a cesspit of advertising, misinformation and polarisation, however well it started. So I never felt tempted.

I don't do instagram either, as it sounds like it would just be like flicking through the kind of glossy fashion-flogging magazine that you read in a dentist waiting room

DoAWheelie · 27/08/2025 06:25

It's not unusual really. But, a social group will tend to all use the same social media site. This means you get clusters around each site as "all my friends use xyz site/app" and "I don't know anyone who doesn't use x".

My social group mostly uses discord and it seems normal to me for everyone to have a discord account. My mother's social group mostly use Facebook so she uses that. My uncles social group are all on what's app, so he uses that.

So your friend may legitimately not know anyone who doesn't use it, but that's just because of the social cluster she is a part of, and not because of any wider trend across the country.

sciaticafanatica · 27/08/2025 06:26

I’m older and I use Instagram for gardening accounts but never been on tik tok

Sundaysoon · 27/08/2025 06:27

I was on instagram for years, tiktok briefly and lost interest in both. I certainly don’t feel
like I’m missing out.

ClaredeBear · 27/08/2025 06:27

Early 50s and I have pretty much everything except Snap. I use them all for work, hobbies and volunteering. I don’t think you’re unusual.

WonderingWanda · 27/08/2025 06:27

Not really. I'm the same age. I do use Instagram, I signed up to it ages ago to follow some fitness people. I don't use tiktok. I did sign into it once when some teens at work had been making malicious videos of staff and I wanted to see if I could find any of myself. I hated the ones I saw and vowed my kids wouldn't ever be using it and deleted my account. Loads of the videos from insta and tik tok appear on the facebook feed now anyway. It's all the same old rubbish.

Sandyshandy · 27/08/2025 06:27

I’ve never looked at TikTok, I find YouTube annoying too.
ive only been on instagram to see pics of dcs school trips.
MN is bad enough - I don’t need more time wasted!

Birdwordie · 27/08/2025 06:30

I think it's normal, I'm 30 and haven't had any form of social media for over ten years (other than this) people think I'm really weird so I don't think you're unusual

Bodyshopdewberry · 27/08/2025 06:43

I am 40 and don't have insta or tiktok. I just think I'd spend so much time gormlessly staring at my screen if I did use them.
I have Facebook but don't post on it. I only use it for groups about cooking or specific health issues.

I am supposed to use LinkedIn for work but am paralysed by the thought that your nonsense will be on there forever and it's all so cringe worthy "really enjoyed the mind numbingly boring event that I want to show off about organised"
