Would you consider it unusual for a woman in her 40s not to be on Tiktok or Instagram?

I am 46 and I have never used Tiktok. I have looked at Instagram a couple of times but never registered on it. I have always thought it was a bit naff. Yet I was told yesterday by someone that it's "unusual" not to be on either of them. I've always thought Tiktok was mostly for people in their 20s and below, and Insta is mostly for under-30s. What are your thoughts MN?

I dont have either, I only have Facebook for the school stuff as they post events on there etc- I'm 40 next year. Even when videos/posts come up on Facebook it really is such utter shallow, mindless nonsense that is just, well pointless 🙄

smoulderingmould · 27/08/2025 06:44

I am younger than you, none of my friends use tictock & many don't bother with insta.

OrangeZebraStripes · 27/08/2025 06:45

Are you joking? I've never touched TikTok as IMHO it's highly addictive. And frankly just a bit wierd.

I was on IG to share photos but TBH it's just a marketing platform for businesses and the algorithm is so annoying I've deleted it. I only had 50 followers, people I know, who are all friends with me on FB, so no loss.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 27/08/2025 06:46

I think it’s normal to be honest. I’m in my 40s and am on TikTok with an ok amount of followers, many of my videos get a few hundred thousand views. My friends are all baffled and aren’t on TikTok 😁

Sheknowsaboutme · 27/08/2025 06:48

Im on instagram as its the only way to access the gym timetable etc

and im on TikTok. I get to see lots on it including stuff the mainstream news dont show us.

Hiphopahip · 27/08/2025 06:54

I’m on instagram as I joined when it was nice way of sharing photos of beautiful things without all the waffle of Facebook. I do quite enjoy some of the reels that come up on it now, ironically most of which are from TikTok, which I refuse to use. Also would not have Snapchat.

Natsku · 27/08/2025 06:58

Not unusual. I have insta so I can follow my children's school's posts but don't scroll through it, just look when they post, or occasionally my friends. Don't have tiktok at all. Not in my 40s yet but close.

mamagogo1 · 27/08/2025 06:58

No, not at all, I don’t have TikTok, it’s basically a teenager thing isn’t it? Only have an instagram account to stalk my young adult DD’s Grin (joking, the term is follow) I don’t post on it, why should I? My friends i actually know their numbers

mamagogo1 · 27/08/2025 07:01

I have facebook but mostly use it to manage my work account, rarely post on it except the occasional gig picture (old friends on it and we basically brag about concerts)

rootsandwings89 · 27/08/2025 07:01

I’m 36 and don’t have tik tok

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 27/08/2025 07:05

No. I'm in my 40's and not on either.

olympicsrock · 27/08/2025 07:06

I’m mid 40s not on either. I have Facebook and Mumsnet and that’s quite enough rubbish.

I used to do instagram and stopped.

itsgettingweird · 27/08/2025 07:06

No! Or at least I’d hope not as I’m 45 and not on it.

I am on instagram but that’s purely because DS is an athlete and it’s the only SM handle he has so when he’s tagged in things and shares I can see them.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted an instagram story that hasn’t been a share.

I still use FB!!!!

ZenNudist · 27/08/2025 07:08

I don't think it's unusual. I'm 46 and have neither

NOTANUM · 27/08/2025 07:10

Mumdiva99 · 27/08/2025 06:09

I am a bit older than you. I have looked at instagram a few times as school put pictures on there.
I have only been on tiktok when I was researching it's use as a social media tool and once to buy loo roll - my kids helped!
I spend too many wasted hours on Mumsnet and FB to need any more rubbish distraction in my life.

Loo roll? 🤣 Had Tesco run out or a special type?

I haven’t had Facebook since 2014.

Another claim to fame - I’ve never bought anything via any social media and feel I’ve found my people.

autienotnaughty · 27/08/2025 07:11

I’m in my forties, I’m on instagram but I mostly follow comedians/funny celebs than real people. And I never post.
not got round to tik tok it seems confusing.

reluctantbrit · 27/08/2025 07:12

I only have insta because we monitored what DD was up to when she was younger, haven't followed anyone really. What's the point of liking constant pictures and videos?

I don't have Tiktok and have no desire to get it. I know that several indie authors I read are using it more and more and go away from FB for their advertisment so there must be a better audience.

Planesmistakenforstars · 27/08/2025 07:16

I'm a bit younger, but don't "get" tiktok. I have a friend who sells stuff on it, so signed up to be nosey. I genuinely don't understand the point of it, and cannot navigate it at all.
Never been on YT.
I do use Ig for quite a specific hobby to get ideas for that, and follow/vice versa people who do the same thing as me.
I use FB as I'm permanently travelling, and it's the place which covers most people, especially older relatives, to keep in touch.
Reddit is my biggest online time drain.

TheChosenTwo · 27/08/2025 07:17

I’m 40 and have Instagram but not TT.
i find Instagram brilliant for finding new food places 😂
It’s so ad heavy these days though. I joined years ago and it was (when i was new to it) a space for sharing photographs and I like nature photography so followed a load of those accounts. I still have hardly any friends from real life on my account, my page is private and I haven’t posted anything on there in years but I do still use it for finding stuff to do if we are away somewhere.

notacooldad · 27/08/2025 07:21

I keep hearing from many over 40s thst Tik Tok is only about weird dances.
Ive given up trying to correct them.
You fi d your interests and like the other SM platforms the algorithms kicks in and you getvwhat you like.
I follow travel, vegan cooking and hiking and thats what I get with the random AirWalk dance thrown in, which I dont mind.
Im 60.

DaisyChain505 · 27/08/2025 07:30

TikTok is absolute brain rot. I think it’s weird when adults have it.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/08/2025 07:31

I’m not on either of them. Not interested. It’s annoying though to have to keep reminding my friends that I can’t open the links they send me to funny or interesting stuff.

CeeJay81 · 27/08/2025 07:38

44 and no tick tok or Instagram here, just not interested. I use FB as dds extracurricular activites have updates on there and i also use it to contact her friends mums. So I feel kind of stuck in there. It's also useful for knowing what's going on locally.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 27/08/2025 07:48

47, I don't get tik tok, i tried but couldn't get my head around it. Insta I went on about 12 years ago and uploaded 4 pictures, think that was my last activity, I just use FB but even that's all adverts and silly videos now

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 27/08/2025 07:50

I'm in my 40s and I don't have either of them, or Facebook.
