I'm an absolute idiot

Only gone and ordered the wrong flooring (lino) AND had it fitted!! I can't believe I have done this when I had SO many opportunities to not make this mistake. £360 practically gone down the drain which is a lot to me. The difference is slight but the more I look at it the more I notice. I am devastated!! It's darker than the one I wanted and to make it worse, I have the correct one in the two bedrooms!! It crossed my mind that I should have brought a sample with me when I went to the shop to confirm my order (I had some of the previously fitted flooring left over) but I trusted that I would recognise it because obviously I had had it in both bedrooms for the past year 🙄 they only had one herringbone when I had the bedrooms done but now they have 2 shades and I didn't fucking realise like the idiot that I am so when he showed me the darker one I said yes. I even questioned the colour when he arrived to fit the flooring and rolled out some of the previous one to compare and stupidly allowed the fitter to convince me it is the same and sometimes there can be a slight difference in the roll or whatever the fuck he said but I obviously accepted the explanation like an idiot!! Once the floor was fitted, I did not immediately notice, it's only after they have left I've rolled out old sample and it's immediately obvious that it's not the same. I am gutted. I don't know what I can do except live with it and hate myself forever. Yeah in the grand scheme of things, things could be worse but I am pretty pissed at myself right now

It's a very, very minor difference.

It'll be fine. No-one else will care. It'll annoy you for a while, but you'll learn to live with it. It's likely to change a colour a bit as it ages anyway.

chunkybear · 26/08/2025 14:09

The darker one is nicer but tbh they’re almost identical, do the rooms run on from each other so you can tell or are they separated by other rooms! Hall?

Hardly any difference- I wouldn't care. Mind you, when the carpet shop rang to say the one I chose was out of stock, I said just bring the nearest match you have, so my opinion is pretty worthless!

RightOnTheEdge · 26/08/2025 14:13

I honestly don't think I'd have noticed the difference, its so slight.

Darragon · 26/08/2025 14:15

Do companies really make colour options that are so identical? I would have thought those were just different batches of the same shade.

BeltaLodaLife · 26/08/2025 14:15

No one is going to notice, and how many people are going to be in the bedrooms and then also in this room?

It still looks great!

BeltaLodaLife · 26/08/2025 14:16

But they do look so so similar, especially at the top. Are you absolutely sure it’s not just difference in the rolls?

SilenceInside · 26/08/2025 14:17

You are giving yourself a really seriously hard time over something extremely minor. You haven’t wasted your money. You’ve got new flooring, which is ever so very slightly different in shade to the one you already have. I can hardly tell the difference from your uploaded picture tbh.

AzureCats · 26/08/2025 14:19

You're overthinking it. You haven't made a mistake, don't be so harsh on yourself. The difference is minimal - almost non existent. And as time goes on the difference in sunlight deteriation and the amount of footfall will be different in all the rooms anyway. Most people will think "bloody hell Sanfrancoco has coordinated lino throughout the house, I wish I was that organised". No one will be examining exact shades of grey!

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 26/08/2025 14:20

It's such a slight difference I wouldn't worry about it. As others have said, it just looks like a slightly darker batch of the original one. Just enjoy your new floor (or get some rugs to cover it!)

chatgptsbestmate · 26/08/2025 14:22

Please stop beating yourself up. It looks great. Honestly

CatherinedeBourgh · 26/08/2025 14:23

When one is renovating it is really, really easy to overfocus on details that no one (including yourself) would notice in any other circumstances.

Give it a month. You won't notice the difference any more.

blobby10 · 26/08/2025 14:25

Like PP have said, the difference is really minimal and once the newer flooring has been cleaned a few times it will look just as light.

Sanfrancoco · 26/08/2025 14:25

This is probably a better picture. I feel like the sofa is now too light (brand new so no chance of replacing any time soon). No curtains so lots of natural light making wrong floor seem not too bad. I know when it's gets dark those dark grey tones are going to really stand out.

I much prefer the darker one, it looks more like actual wood. The light looks too light against your sofa and more like plastic somehow.

MyIvyGrows · 26/08/2025 14:29

Honestly you’re over-thinking it.

I hate to be that poster but I’m going to do it anyway: aren’t you lucky having lots of nice new homewares and furniture? Maybe just enjoy it?

I agree with Darragon.

The difference is miniscule - although personally I prefer the slightly darker shade.

Is this for a third bedroom, OP, or a completely different room? Whichever - and for what it's worth - I honestly think they compliment each other beautifully. 👍 (And I am a seriously fussy old git 😀)

KawasakiBabe · 26/08/2025 14:31

I will say the same thing to you as I do to my mum, stop making things up to worry about. She’s a terrible worrier, about things that don’t matter and about hypothetical things, things thst probably won’t even happen, but could. Honestly, that way madness lies. There’s very little difference in them and they both look lovely.

Maddy70 · 26/08/2025 14:32

It looks the same .... I think the fitter may be correct. It could just be a new roll and the colour difference that goes with that I like them both. Literally no-one will notice the difference unless you point it out

I understand where you are coming from and I'm honestly trying to get a grip myself but all this stuff wasn't free, I am a single parent who worked very hard to provide, I'm genuinely devastated and I can't help it no matter how much I try to pull myself together. It's so noticeable to me although I can appreciate it would not bother others

Separated by hall but you can see the difference from hallway as you can see into all three

I'm trying to convince myself the fitter was correct, it's the only way I can forgive myself. Hoping it may get lighter with wear/light too. I get that others won't notice but I do and it's me who has to live with it

The darker one looks nice

plus, the LAST thing you need is everything in the room to be the same tone of grey.

i saw a Rightmove horror listing once where the whole place was grey to the point that you thought the photos were in black and white.

The dark grey against a lighter grey sofa looks really nice. If you’re really bothered, get a nice rug to warm things up a bit .

yogpot · 26/08/2025 14:41

Aww, whilst I think the floor looks fine and no one will else will notice, I totally empathise with that crushing feeling when you’ve made a silly mistake despite the fact you thought you took every care to get it right, especially when it’s something that has cost a fair bit of money. I also self flagellate to a ridiculous degree about small things, get super het up and my internal monologue can get really nasty to myself.

Take a moment, breathe and go for a walk.
