We've had a glorious summer...but is anyone else looking forward to Autumn?

Just that really. I'm grateful for the lovely summer we've had but I am really looking forward to opaque tights and boots, soups and casseroles, cooler days, candles, fairy lights and Autumn leaves.

It’s the symbolism of the fresh start to the year I really like, obviously linked to school and university days. Also:

Cheaper flights and hotels than in summer. Less crowds in touristy areas. Think I may book a solo mid-week trip to York now for November.

Culture wise there’s lots of things to look forward to - the new Robert Galbraith book, Kathy Burke’s memoir, some good TV on Netflix (Black Rabbit, Nobody Wants This). The return of Slow Horses and The Morning Show. Autumn is the start of the film award season so there’s lots of appealing looking films out in the next few months.

I just wish autumn was a bit colder like it was when I was growing up, but climate change (yes I also love Winter!).

I think the problem is that the Autumn we imagine ( and which I love) is rarely the one we get. Cool, sunny days with crisp leaves etc are the ideal, but too often we get non descript, endless grey, warm-ish soggy and meh Autumn which doesn’t live up to the ideal. I think it is the same with winter. If we had bright, crisp conditions that would be lovely, but we seem to get stuck with never ending grey.
That said, I’ve absolutely had enough of being too hot this summer, and we are desperate for rain.

it doesn't feel like a fresh start to the year to me, It feels like the year is nearing it's end. The trees losing their leaves in Autumn always depresses me.

Ha. Yes like a cup of sickly sweet hot chocolate is enough to get us through 6 months of cold and drizzle!

And so much oxalate, you might as well donate your kidneys now so someone'll have t'benefit : )

I enjoy all the seasons and love that we live in a country lucky enough the experience them.

I have to admit to feeling unusually melancholic about the end of this particular summer though? Maybe it's because the kids are getting older and I know we don't have many summer's like this left or maybe it's because the weather has been so glorious (apart from the 8 days in late July we went to the coast of course). Or maybe its because I've had a massive chunk of time off work in one go? I'm not entirely sure.

I'll embrace Autumn, as I always do but I have a strange sense of not wanting to wish time away at the moment?

BoredZelda · 25/08/2025 21:21

I’m not a fan of summer, give me cold weather any day.

DrCoconut · 25/08/2025 21:27

Not at all. I could do with a few more months of summer to make up for the years of crap summers we've had. I'm loving the good weather and sad that it's starting to get dark earlier now. I feel so much better when I can get a good dose of vitamin D (I don't absorb tablets well) and warmth. And there's only a week left of the school holidays. Autumn is usually miserable, wet and windy. I don't get the thing about soup and casserole either as I eat these when I want to not because it's Autumn. If I want soup in July I have it. I also eat salad in winter.

I've found my people! 🍂

My favourite season, I just feel so much more "me" in autumn and winter. I find summer heat and light draining (I know this makes no sense!)

Can't wait to get back into tights dresses and boots, slow cooker meals, hot baths. I always seem to read more in autumn and winter aswell.

No. I don't mind the first couple of weeks of September but after that... dark evenings, dark mornings, rain.
I've loved every second of this summer. I don't want to wear 'snuggly' knit wear.. ( and do not like hot chocolate ) I want to be in shorts T shirt and crocs all year round😁I've not needed heating, or a tumble dryer for months and months, the dog is not mud covered, my allotment has been incredible ... I love summer!

Same here. "Snuggly" clothes are awful - itchy, suffocating and unflattering. I hate having to go back into socks too. Give me a light weight dress or shorts and T shirt and sandals any day. My skin can breathe and I feels lbs lighter.

Justanotherdramalama · 25/08/2025 16:27

Already stocked up the hot chocolate 🤣

Don't you have it in all year? We do.

suki1964 · 25/08/2025 21:42

Nope

Already travelling to work in the dark and we sat and ate dinner tonight with all the lights on :(

This is the first summer I have lived here that we have gone so long without the heating kicking in , hasn't been on since easter , usually its a very short period its off and certainly on by mid August

I do like Autumn as a rule but nope, not this year

SheWaits · 25/08/2025 21:43

I've never really understood the love for Autumn. Nights drawing in isn't a positive for me and I'm not a fan of Halloween, or Bonfire Night, or dead leaves all over the place.

I do think we need some rain though, the reservoirs are scarily low.

popcornandpotatoes · 25/08/2025 21:44

Yes, we have a holiday in the sun next week, after that I'll be ready for it cooling down. But it has been a good summer, last year was shite

sanityisamyth · 25/08/2025 22:25

No. I dread autumn. I’m already sad that the leaves are changing colours (although mainly drought related). I’d have summer all year round if I could.

Yes definitely! I’ve got another summer holiday in 3 weeks but after that I’ll be home and decorate for autumn. All my summer decor gets replaced with autumnal cosiness. Bake Off is back soon! That signals the start for me and is the first night we light autumn scent candles.

i love all the lead up to Christmas and Christmas itself but then I sink into a bit of a winter depression until about April which I’m not looking forward to. 😭

Im exactly the same! Love spring, love summer, love autumn and the build up to Xmas. Then feel really miserable January to march and just sick of the cold and dark with no festive lights and excitement and am desperate to get to April for lighter nights and warmth coming. I love when I see the buds on the trees and know spring is coming.
