We've had a glorious summer...but is anyone else looking forward to Autumn?

Just that really. I'm grateful for the lovely summer we've had but I am really looking forward to opaque tights and boots, soups and casseroles, cooler days, candles, fairy lights and Autumn leaves.

Absolutely, yes. It has always been my favourite season, I think because my birthday is in October. But this year, especially, I am longing for the cooler, crisper days, the colours, the smell of wood smoke, the boots and coats, Strictly. The whole shebang, in fact.

I love autumn it feels like the new year - probably in part because I’ve had children in the school system for 27 years!

I like to do a deep autumn clean in September after the children go back (less relevant these days as mine are older). Get out the autumn and winter throws, candles and things like that ready for the colder, darker evenings. Sort out clothes and wash the stored jumpers etc and hang them ready for when they are needed. Summer clothes are packed away except for a few bits that are still out for the warmer September days.

As I work with little ones I still get to go conker and berry hunting which is nice.

I’m less keen once we get to November and it is dark on leaving and returning from work and it’s cold and rainy. Think November is my least favorite month overall. I love September and October. December just feels busy and hectic. I love it when we get to the calmness of January and look towards spring.

I can't wait for the first chilly day. The UK can be so beautiful in Autumn. There is nowhere on earth I'd rather be than somewhere like Oxford or Bath or Cambridge or York on a cold, bright Autumnal day – sun shining through yellow leaves, a walk in the park, a coffee, a mooch around the bookshops, etc. People who emigrate often say they miss the seasons.

Bathingforest · 25/08/2025 15:46

Still summer for us, Devon holiday , really hot day

Bluevelvetsofa · 25/08/2025 15:51

No! Spring and summer for me. It feels such a long time until spring again.

Cold weather, dark nights, expensive heating, layers of clothes. No and no again.

MagneticSquirrel · 25/08/2025 15:52

Nope, June please come back! Decent hours of daylight, sun in the mornings and daytime warmth, if only it could be summer all year!

Velvetiva · 25/08/2025 15:58

Nope.
I feel the cold v easily, and get reynaud's so it's basically miserable from October to April. My house is 70s build and cold.

Increasingly I don't like driving in the dark. Which is unfortunate, because i leave for work at 7 and get home around 6ish.
Running in the dark is really fucking boring. And it means I can't do my summer routes, because they're not safe. Although running in the severe cold and rain is easier than the warm.

I don't want to be cosy. I want to be outside. But warm. Like this afternoon- shorts+ vest, bare feet, garden swing.

Adore autumn but will miss lying in the sunny garden with a good book

Yamadori · 25/08/2025 16:06

I have always loved autumn and like a pp, associate it with a new beginning, probably going back to my school days.

By August, gardens are starting to look a bit tired and crispy round the edges, a lot of plants have gone over and some things have never really lived up to their promise, and I find that depressing. I like cutting it all back in the autumn and making it all tidy ready for spring.

EchoedSilence · 25/08/2025 16:07

Nope. Not looking forward to months of cold weather and dark evenings. Or high fuel bills.

1AnotherOne · 25/08/2025 16:12

Yes definitely! I’ve got another summer holiday in 3 weeks but after that I’ll be home and decorate for autumn. All my summer decor gets replaced with autumnal cosiness. Bake Off is back soon! That signals the start for me and is the first night we light autumn scent candles.

i love all the lead up to Christmas and Christmas itself but then I sink into a bit of a winter depression until about April which I’m not looking forward to. 😭

MyElatedUmberFinch · 25/08/2025 16:13

I feel a bit sad about summer ending and am debating booking another holiday for next week.

I'm glad it works for you. I've taken a vit d supplement daily since 2017 when I tested as low. Hopefully it helps my immunity but no luck with the SAD!

I’m very sorry to hear that. I must say I had better results with the spray than any previous tablets. I hope you manage the season as well as you can and it’s not too horrid for you xx

MrsLizzieDarcy · 25/08/2025 16:21

It's already starting to look autumnal here, the leaves are dropping, the blackberries are ripening and the orchards are full of apples thudding to the floor. I love autumn, cool mornings followed by sunny days and that wonderful smell in the air. And I think my older dog is desperate for cooler days, he hates the heat. He's flopped on the sofa today and looking very sorry for himself.

Oh hell, all the hot chocolate snuggly feckers will be out in force soon 🫣

That made me chuckle.

AliceMaforethought · 25/08/2025 16:24

💯

I love autumn, it's my favourite season. Spiced hot chocolate, jumper dresses, new notebooks, rich colours, stews and pies, walks through crunchy leaves, great drama, and not being too hot at night. What's not to love!?

Already stocked up the hot chocolate 🤣

Autumn has the best of both worlds. It's often comfortably warm enough to do that well into October.

Ha. Yes like a cup of sickly sweet hot chocolate is enough to get us through 6 months of cold and drizzle!

That’s why the crunchy leaves help.

Sandyshandy · 25/08/2025 16:39

No, I hate it. I adore long summer evenings and it being warm enough to feel warm in the shade in a tshirt. I love the light and my garden. I feel cold for about 8 and half months of the year so summer feels like recovery. I feel more me and everything feels more real in the summer. Autumn and winter are just tedious and dark. The shops are all ready full of dreary sludgy colours. Why can’t we all wear cheerful summer colours all year round? Sometimes I don’t see my garden in the light for weeks on end.
what I’d like is 2 months of spring (exciting looking forward to summer), 6 months summer (bliss), 2 months autumn (bit of mellow fruitfulness, note the changing seasons), 2 months winter (bit of twinkly lights and festiveness, make us appreciate summer).
what we get is 3 weeks nice spring, 5 weeks nice summer, 4 months dreary, foggy autumn, couple of months of miserable darkness with 12 hours of snow, and months of cold, rainy spring. This lovely summer has been a wonderful treat!

Delatron · 25/08/2025 16:39

MyElatedUmberFinch · 25/08/2025 16:31

Ahh the crunchy leaves (which in reality are soggy leaves!).

FeliciaFancybottom · 25/08/2025 16:46

Nope. Autumn is weirdly fetishised these days and I don't get it. Hot chocolate, snuggling under a blanket on the sofa, being cosy, boots and tights, fairy lights etc can all get in the bin.

AliceMaforethought · 25/08/2025 16:47

Oh look, the moaners have arrived. The cold weather often doesn't start until well into October or even November. February is the worst month. We had an amazing spring this year as well.
