Hyped-up activities that are actually shite.

Loads of my friends do yoga. It's really relaxing, they say. It's really mindful, they say. It's a good workout without realising you're working out, they say. It's a really nice community of people, they say.

So on Saturday morning I tried it.

It was bloody awful. Everything about it was bloody terrible. It wasn't remotely relaxing or mindful. I wasn't a very good workout and the people were cult-loke lunatics.

And I've felt a bit lightheaded, dizzy, and just not quite myself ever since.

Tell me about activities that everyone seems to have a wide-on for, but which you hated.

All exercise, I’d rather be sewing

Massage are actual torture. The ones I have had had been so painful that I thought the masseuse was actually enjoying using torture devices on me. Absolutely the opposite of relaxing 😣 and very painful for some time afterwards!

If you have muscle tension and muscle pain, deep tissue massages with a lot of pressure help to relieve that pain. It's hard to explain, but it's something you understand if you have muscle pain.

AntiBullshit · 25/08/2025 21:04

Opera
Workplace activities such as team building
Gym
Football
Rugby
Watxhing football in a pub whilst standing up

But!But! If you all hate spa days what will you do in the throes of a crisis?Everyone knows mn sage advice to any crisis is chirruped Spa Day! Spa day with highlights!

Pearl69 · 25/08/2025 21:07

Pilates. I so wanted to get into it, enjoy it and to make it a weekly event. In the class, I felt so self conscious, uncomfortable, hot and bothered and hurt my back . And it was boring. Needed a physio to sort out the damage.

I love them, spas are my happy place.

Was persuaded to go to a Gong Bath. Utter shite. And worse than shite because it made me feel weird and edgy, gave me a bit of a headache and I felt nauseous the whole time. Apparently it's do with the sound frequencies that don't agree with everyone.

Factor in stupid rattan mat on a hard cold floor and I honestly will put it up there as one of the worst activities I've ever done. Cost me £20 as well.

BountifulPantry · 25/08/2025 21:08

Oh I’m sorry you did t like yoga - I absolutely love it! I even do hot yoga which is in a heated studio- 40 degrees. Definitely not for everyone!

Ski-ing - painful and what's fun about basically trying to get to the bottom of a slope without suffering injury or death.

Camping - I can end any drought in any location just by saying the word "tent". I tried glamping once to try to avoid the leaking tent misery. It rained so hard even the yurt couldn't keep the water out.

Can you come and camp in our fields? It’s drier than Gandhi’s sandals round here and we could do with a good deluge Grin

Another one: musicals. Just fucking get on with the plot, I don’t need a song-and-dance session every five minutes and the fashion for turning everything into a musical drives me insane. The only thing worse than a musical is a sing-along musical <shudders>

Going to the beach when it's sunny. This one makes no sense; there's no logical connection between sunshine and the beach. It also doesn't make sense to lie down when it's sunny, and the sand is uncomfortable. I'm convinced that going to the beach is one of those activities that people only do because they want other people to see them doing it.

Pubs and clubs. Not possible to speak to anyone because the environments are too noisy, and getting drunk is not particularly fun. Young men like these places because the movies tell them that the women are desperate to have sex with anyone, but the men quickly become bored and move on when they discover that real life is different from the movies.

Well, you go to the beach on a hot day to spend it in the water, which is lovely. You only lie on the hot sand after, to dry.
I realise some people do it backwards with main focus on tanning, which I agree is nonsense. But the seaside is normally cooler with a breeze on a hot day, so still a better place to be.

I also hate all exercise - sure one day I’ll find something for me!

I hate most exercise too, the only thing I love and can do consistently is rebounding (mini trampoline routines to music, e.g boogie bounce) at home with online classes by someone I subscribe to in Canada. Very specific 😂

Could not think of anything worse than gym/yoga/running.

Hope you find the exercise for you one day!

Yesitisred · 25/08/2025 21:15

Stadium gigs - the booking the ticket palaver, the cost of the tickets and the hidden fees, security who don't want you to stand up, talk, drink or enjoy yourself in any way whatsoever, watching on the screens because your very expensive seats are too far back to see the tiny human dots on the stage, the cost of parking, the queue to leave the fucking car park...

TrickyD · 25/08/2025 21:18

Drinking water.

I hate it; coffee yes, tea yes, water no thank you.

shuggles · 25/08/2025 21:19

@u3ername Well, you go to the beach on a hot day to spend it in the water, which is lovely.

Most people who go to the beach don't enter the water, or only enter it briefly.

But the seaside is normally cooler with a breeze on a hot day, so still a better place to be.

To get the benefit of the sea breeze effect, you have to be in the shade, and most people at the beach aren't in the shade. No one feels cool sprawled out underneath the sun.

A better option for cooling would be to go a public building or a supermarket.

Scorchio84 · 25/08/2025 21:21

I don't mind Yoga but team running, spa days, any team building exercise

I love the beach, I don't lie down to tan

I have a similar effect on Wales (the country) Every single bloody time I've been there, even if just driving through some small uninteresting corner enroute to somewhere else, it's rained.

It's not you, that just what Wales is like.

DiscouragingDiagnosis · 25/08/2025 21:25

Love yoga. Also running, skiing, escape rooms and camping, so I think I'm an outlier. I recently joined a gym, having been a lifelong hater, and though I don't especially enjoy going, I feel a trillion times better, more energetic, more useful and less menopausal now I have muscles.

But save me from:
Fungineering
Starting dinner after 1900
Girls nights and hen parties
Any kind of personal grooming - the hairdresser is as bad as the dentist imo, and sadly more frequent
Watching any kind of sport
Boating of any description
Playing fucking rounders.

Scorchio84 · 25/08/2025 21:26

@shuggles I've been on many beaches & the breeze is always there, not just in the shade.. it's one of life's simplest pleasures

I don't know anyone who goes to the beach to tan..

ClothesMyArmHurts · 25/08/2025 21:26

What’s fake pumpkin picking? We have a fairly local farm in our county that has acres of real pumpkins, they cut some ready, but you could try and get your own if you had a knife as they are really tough to break off.

But they are grown there, And more varieties than I’ve ever seen in my life.
Gorgeous.

They have some local producers there too, so we had some very warming delicous food, and have a bar ( no good we were driving ) and hot drinks available to buy.

Camping.
I am not going on holiday to live in worse circumstances than I have at home.

I'm a campervanner. I love it. See so many new places, we're in Europe at the moment. I couldn't live in a van as I love my home. Hotels though, too many people.

MrsRonaldWeasley · 25/08/2025 21:28

Hot tubs 🤢

Notashamed13 · 25/08/2025 21:28

A person running with nothing chasing is just wrong! 😁

Yoga. It's just so boring to me.

I agree, yoga is boring. I do it because it really helps my arthritis. At the end of the session, I can turn my head/shoulders/knees etc. My yoga teacher is lovely, and we do have a laugh. But by 45 mins I am ready to leave.

Happyhettie · 25/08/2025 21:34

Baby showers
Hen weekends with inflatable penis things
Hot tubs. Got in one once, it was very noisy, not at all relaxing and I didn’t see the point (my friends kids got hot tub disease from a hot tub party. 🤢 )
Yoga - dull as ditch water
Bottomless brunches - can’t stand Prosecco
Escape rooms - I’ve done one and that will do.

Work summer and Christmas dos. I like the people I work with but I’m not spending £70 to spend an evening with them. They are not my friends and I don’t drink if I go out with work people (having seen so many people get hammered and say / do things they really shouldn’t)

Spa days - no idea what one actually does on one but it’s all the annoying people I know who enjoy them so that puts me off.

ChicOliveCritic · 25/08/2025 21:35

coxesorangepippin · 25/08/2025 14:19

Yes yoga is shit

I'll add spa days

Having a bath with other people?

Come on.

Also, tapas, anywhere other than Spain

Sharing food??? Not bloody likely

How can you not like spa days?! 😦 You don't have to do the communal parts like a sauna, steam or swim, but a hot stone massage is bliss! 🥰 I'm with you on the sharing food though! Buzz off and get your own appetisers! 😋
