Hate how racist everything has become, and how quickly it’s happened.

I was just looking at facebook, and a ‘Sad face’ newsmaker article came up. Practically all the comments mentioned boats, asylum seekers etc etc. Its really getting me down.

Travelled to the south west last weekend. On the way down no flags on bridges. On the way back, in some areas, every bridge.

Its scary how quickly it’s all happening.

Many countries fly their national flags from municipal buildings, libraries, schools and other public places and even gardens. Why don’t they do it here? Is flying your own flag racist?

Edited

I can’t believe I just read this on Mumsnet. This month’s fad of putting England flags up everywhere has nothing to do with our flag culture. It stems from racism and is designed to intimidate.

When the vast majority of people can't get a GP appointment for weeks, can't get dental treatment on the NHS, and have to wait all day in A and E to get some medical attention, it just doesn't make sense that our infrastructure can support more and more people arriving in the UK needing housing, employment and education and medical care. I worked in an underprivileged school for some time and watched the issues that large numbers of immigrants had on the system. Specialist teachers had to be employed as they didn't speak English and didn't want to integrate with British culture so were taught outside the classroom. Many of them didn't turn up to school so that necessitated endless calls to their homes to ask why they were absent. Fights were common place in lunchtimes between rival 'gangs' from their community. Parents didn't work, lived off benefits and were in social housing. It was common knowledge that these communities came to the UK for the benefits system. This was pre Brexit. It affected the learning and safety of the kids who were already struggling at school. This is just a small slice of what causes anger and frustration. I don't think it's racism, it's frustration that people are working hard to make a life for themselves, paying taxes, but not seeing any quality of life as a result. Also, we keep being told that there is a housing crisis and green belt land is being built on everywhere. If we can't house our own population, it's common sense that we can't take in more and more people , whatever the reason they come here.

That’s really rude, and I might have to report your post for being personally attacking.

However, I have examples of non British nationals getting council houses above British. It’s usually in the case where there are children….

That doesn’t mean that they give non British nationals housing first. Everyone is in the same system and accessed in the same way.

Asylum seekers don’t get houses at all. Only if they get refugee status, do they enter the same system for houses as everyone else.

I think you'll find that the Right to Buy scheme introduced by Margaret Thatcher has impacted the amount of social housing available far more than immigration.

It did, but there have been Labour governments who have not withdrawn the RTB. Scotland and Wales have, so why not England?

I’m Scots, DH is English, I have no issue with any British flags being displayed. I’m aware the far right hi-jacked the flag of St George, perhaps it’s time for it to be claimed back. I live in England, yet see the flags of other countries flown here regularly.

The guy doing it on her street has three flags up, an upside down union flag, a st georges flag and a st georges flag that has got the crest of his football team added (saints). He caused the criminal damage on the fence and cars, the park is on the same street, but she doesn’t know if he also did the signs there.

Yeah but that’s quite different example to what I’m saying I think.

We were in our area yesterday and we saw a lot of GBflags on the top road (non residential bit) and I said to DH wonder what this is all about then. But it is sad how we can’t just be proud and have our flags up in the high street etc without it crossing our mind if it’s racism/pro-reform/anti immigrant etc

Makehaysunshine · 25/08/2025 07:31

I also have friends who are working to help refugees integrate. They ARE offered housing as a priority. Many of them have little interest in learning English or integrating into British culture which produces bubbles and sections of the community who don't mix.

Its mainly middle class white women, not just here but across the West.

Racist and sexist, nice.

Who are you talking about? What kind of newly arrived immigrant came to your school and lived off benefits?

This is what my DH and I say. We have moved into a new build estate of around 20/30 houses but a particular group of race all socialise with each other and haven’t integrated with the rest of us. I feel excluded on my own road.

I think the flag issue in particular has really shown a disconnect between the highly educated, left leaning people (who produce most of our media, run the govt etc) and the bulk of everyday people around the rest of the country.

It’s an odd situation where lefties will proudly wave a Palestinian flag on marches, but then sneer at anyone wanting to display a St George’s flag. Is it really surprising people are feeling the govt doesn’t understand them or care about their concerns?

The left-leaning people who run most of our media? As soon as anyone uses the term 'lefties', I stop taking them seriously.

They can once their claim is approved, they can apply for benefits and a council property. They often get a high banding as they are ejected from asylum seeker housing 8 weeks after their status changes to refugee so are classed as homeless. They are provided with government funded accommodation as asylum seekers also, perhaps you are the one that should educate themselves?

It’s scary. We’re a hateful, drunk, entitled nation.

We're actually one of the most tolerant nations there is. Why else do people flee here.

Sadly we’re all responsible for that, rather than doing something when the EDL etc decided to turn it into a racist symbol, we all just let it happen. If as a whole we had done something years ago, it wouldn’t be linked to racism the way it is now. There used to be similar issues with the union flag due to the national front, but that was nipped in the bud at the time to prevent it just being a symbol of racism.

Absentmindedsmile · 25/08/2025 07:35

Many people are worried about the safety of women and girls. Many asylum seekers come from countries where women and girls are treated as second class citizens. Do they bring that attitude to women and girls to the UK?

Some sex crimes stats have been published, following a FOI request:

….the [sex crime] rates, based on convictions per 10,000 of the population put Afghans, with 77 convictions, at the top with a rate of 59 per 10,000 – 22.3 times that of Britons.

They were followed by Eritreans, who accounted for 59 convictions at a rate of 53.6 per 10,000 of their population.

Britons accounted for 12,619 sex offence convictions, representing a rate of 2.66 per per 10,000 of their population in England and Wales.

https://archive.md/6AXAy Archive version of you can’t access the other link.

Further more detailed stats are promised.

Yes but they often enter the system with more points, due to being refugees and having a larger number of children. That ishow the system works, and that is what people feel is unfair.

Yes - it's the same disconnect that manifested itself in the Brexit referendum.

A right wing group has orchestrated these flags flying.

Have they? Which RW Group?

A genuine question.

Please advise, thanks.
