I am on a low income and am in debt but still donate a little each month to the following and so I wondered who other people donate to…

Unicef - in the hope and belief they are a trust worthy charity supporting vulnerable children across the world, they also do a lovely Xmas advent calendar. I wonder if they are the best to increase my donation to for the people in Gaza.

Refuge - I believe wholeheartedly in safe spaces for women and children

Great Ormand St hospital - I’m very fortunate to have healthy children and my heart goes out to parents who alongside caring for ill children, having to worry about travel costs and accommodation etc.

At Christmas I usually do a one off donation to Sense a charity for deaf and blind children and my kids choose a charity to give a donation, currently WW (for rhinos).

I am low income too, but sometimes send money to the rescue my greyhound is from. They do fabulous work.

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/08/2025 21:43

Local charities, one off donations from time to time and more at Christmas.

Gloriousgardener11 · 24/08/2025 21:45

Guide dogs for the blind because I think they are a good cause and make a difference to some peoples lives.
Having said that I ignore their calls to try and increase my monthly contribution, accept what I give and be grateful!

ExcellentDesign · 24/08/2025 21:45

I support the local hospice, children's hospice, air ambulance and a special school, plus Diabetes UK because a family member has it. At Christmas I donate to Crisis.

FeyreandRhysand · 24/08/2025 21:46

The Red Cross, with Gaza in mind.

DS also saw a Sight Savers ad and asked if we could donate to them too.

I absolutely refuse to donate to Go Fund Me’s of any nature though.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 24/08/2025 21:46

I have a direct debit set up to a homeless charity in bath.

I vaguely remember signing up for it when I was drunk during freshers and I don’t have the heart to cancel it at this point

SparklyGlitterballs · 24/08/2025 21:46

My local hospice, where DH died last year, and also to a local wildlife rescue/rehab organisation. Both do incredible work and rely on donations and supporters to help them operate and survive. I avoid the big, well known charities, as I'm not confident my money is used wisely instead of going into fat-cat wage packets.

One I'd never donate to? RSPCA. Bloody useless, waste of space. I hear far too many reports of how they don't respond to animals in need.

SouthernFashionista · 24/08/2025 21:50

I donate to a small local charity that supports school children in Zimbabwe. I also donate to local hospice.

I frequently support Gofundme campaigns - most likely one where a parent has cancer or similar. Most recently it was for a couple who’d lost their little girl in a traffic accident. I have plenty of money and I am happy to use it to help others, even if I don’t know them.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 24/08/2025 21:50

I’ve had a direct debit donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital since I was 16 and got my first job, I’m in my 40’s now. I remember learning about what they do and feeling so lucky I’ve never had to deal with problems like the patients there.
I donate to cancer research occasionally too.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/08/2025 21:51

Shelter and PDSA through GAYE at work.
British Red Cross - I got doorstepped a few years ago, thought I'd do it for a year but have left it running.
Local animal rescue where I adopted my pets from.
Big Issue seller - there's a regular guy I see when I go through town. I don't go so often these days so I give more when I do
Random selection of whatever someone asks me to sponsor them for

duckduckgooseduckagain · 24/08/2025 21:53

RNLI (kids go surfing), Air Ambulance, Dogs Trust, local hospice. I don’t like to support charities that research on animals so these seem like ones that suit

RentRaft · 24/08/2025 21:58

RNLI and Air Ambulance

We live on the coast/rurally and they're kept v busy....and I want them to help me/mine should a dreadful day come!

laundryjoy · 24/08/2025 21:58

Trussel Trust - I volunteered for a local food bank some years ago that happened to be coordinated by them so I get over the religious link (and my personal debt mountain) and donate £10 a month now I don't have time for them. I also give time as a secretary and Treasurer to 2 other local charities and support dp in his role as the chair of the national support group of the rare disease he has. I also have spent the best part of 30 years actually working as a charity accountant.

icebearforpresident · 24/08/2025 21:58

Monthly direct debit to BPAS. I started a few years ago when Roe vs Wade was overturned which also coincided with harassment of women and staff (or ‘vigils’ as they like to call them) at my local maternity unit.

Goldenboysmum · 24/08/2025 22:00

I have a DD to The Samaritans every month.

Will also donate/sponsor any MH charity events/collections etc

I lost my son to suicide, so I hope my small donations might help to make a difference to someone somewhere.

Venalopolos · 24/08/2025 22:00

I give a few hundred pounds a year, but mostly though JustGiving and sponsoring people for charities close to their hearts as I don’t have any pet causes (other than the charity I’m a trustee for, but I only do a one off small donation to them each year).

saraclara · 24/08/2025 22:01

Medecins Sans Frontiers. Such incredibly brave doctors and nurses risking their lives in war zones to save others.

Runzilla · 24/08/2025 22:02

On a direct debit I donate to local mountain rescue team, RNLI, local hospice, NSPCC and Oxfam.
Ad hoc go fund me when asked by friends especially cancer charities.
Used to do Plan, where you support a child overseas but gave that up.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 24/08/2025 22:04

I sponsor people if they’re close friends or family and doing something different or with a lot of effort for all sorts of charities. I also give to the Poppy appeal religiously and give £20 to the soup kitchen in Charing Cross each Christmas.

Betheadore · 24/08/2025 22:04

Guide dogs. I imagine they are life changing.
Battersea cat and dogs home.
Local hospice, all on DD.

Ad hoc to local appeals, and I also donate towards court cases off the feminism boards on MN that need support.
Poppy Appeal.

I did donate monthly to the RSPCA, but cancelled that last year. I've heard too many complaints and googled the amount paid out to executives.

It's lovely to help others, but I do think if you are in debt, then you are best helping yourself first.

So sorry to hear this. My bestfriend is a Samaritan it’s an amazing service.

BashfulClam · 24/08/2025 22:05

Breast cancer charities as I have lost a few good friends, social bite at Christmas as they do a meal on Christmas day with a gift for homeless people, dogs trust, the MS Society they were a great source of information when my dad was diagnosed. I alternate between them all. December is breast cancer care as my school friend died in December from secondary breast cancer. She was 45 and left behind two children that she will never see grow into adults. I donate in her memory. CHECK YOUR BOOBS! Sorry but I’ll keep the message going.

Terriblytwee · 24/08/2025 22:06
