I am on a low income and am in debt but still donate a little each month to the following and so I wondered who other people donate to…

Unicef - in the hope and belief they are a trust worthy charity supporting vulnerable children across the world, they also do a lovely Xmas advent calendar. I wonder if they are the best to increase my donation to for the people in Gaza.

Refuge - I believe wholeheartedly in safe spaces for women and children

Great Ormand St hospital - I’m very fortunate to have healthy children and my heart goes out to parents who alongside caring for ill children, having to worry about travel costs and accommodation etc.

At Christmas I usually do a one off donation to Sense a charity for deaf and blind children and my kids choose a charity to give a donation, currently WW (for rhinos).

Nothing where i have a standing order to. I sponsor people ad hoc if theyre raising money for a charity. I also volunteer with two local charities (homeless shelter weekly and christmas toy appeal annually) where i give my time mostly with smaller £ donation annually

Badger17 · 24/08/2025 23:44

Injured jockeys fund.

I’m a huge horse racing fan and the charity does a huge amount to help jockeys who in some cases have suffered life changing injuries.

Poepourri · 24/08/2025 23:47

Great ormond Street- give annually.
A local mental health support charity or homeless charity ( varies) also an annual donation.

Donate stuff mostly to Sue Ryder as its most convenient.

Don't have any DDs set up and probably won't again.

Poepourri · 24/08/2025 23:52

As to why - obviously i feel those charities are worthwhile and doing good work.

JadeSeahorse · 25/08/2025 00:02

We donate sporadically to Mencap and
they are also beneficiaries in our wills.

The only charity who helped us when our DD with SLD, severe autism and a life threatening form of epilepsy was a child.

The Epileptic Society and Autistic Society were useless. Mencap were great. 👍

I give a small, monthly donation to Hospitality Action group, they support people who do or have in the last few years worked in hospitality and fallen on hard times.
I left an abusive relationship with nothing and they helped me buy essentials for myself & my daughter when we moved and had nothing. Beds, a cooker and carpets. They also sent an invite to their summer party (ironically I couldn't go as I was working!) and sent us cinema tickets and a voucher for a drink each and some popcorn.
Now things are better I give back, although finances are still tight I will never forget the relief and gratitude on opening the letter telling me they were going to help me.

They are supported by some big names in hospitality, but I'd never heard of them and wouldn't have known they existed if it weren't for an advisor I had when setting everything up.

I also sponsor/donate when friends or colleagues are raising money for things.

I started donating to RNLI when all the right wings saying they were going to stop!

I sponsor 2 children through compassion. This is my biggest expense at £60 a month, £50 twice a year for birthday and £50 each at Christmas, but I’m paying for them to attend school and they write to me and send photos.

my local cancer also get a small donation

but I also run a small charity and always buying stuff and not claiming the money back.

Kirbert2 · 25/08/2025 00:11

My son was diagnosed with cancer last year (he is now in remission) so I support a lot of the charities that personally helped us.

A local charity
Young Lives vs Cancer
Children with Cancer UK

My dh says I'm a sucker when it comes to causes - I donate to about 3 animal charities, we sponsor a child, oxfam, shelter, greenpeace, woodland trust, standup against racism, wwf and probably another 3 I can't remember. I also donate food and volunteer for my local food bank. This may explain why we couldn't afford a summer holiday this year, oh dear.

RavenclawWitchy · 25/08/2025 00:29

Local hospice and children's hospice

Violinist64 · 25/08/2025 00:34

National Deaf Children's Society.

NoKidsSendDogs · 25/08/2025 00:58

I donate quite a lot to charities on a monthly basis, strictly animal charities, and try to give more to the ones I know go directly to the animals instead of overhead etc. I also have charitable giving through work so it comes out of my pre tax income and I give to the rangers in virunga (park in the congo) who fight the poachers.

gottakeeponmoving · 25/08/2025 01:02

Christian Aid, It's the only charity I give to. Every year the envelope comes through the door and every year I fill it ready for collection.

mondaytosunday · 25/08/2025 01:08

Shelter and Red Cross via direct debit.

Rolda in the Ukraine, soidog in thailand and humane society international are also big ones. I'm sure there are also many in gaza which need protection from the war criminal Netanyahu. I donate to a donkey charity there as well.

Rainbowqueeen · 25/08/2025 02:18

I volunteer with a local charity that helps homeless people, donate to my local women’s shelter and to the cancer society, the latter in honour of my mum who passed from cancer. If anyone would like to help those with cancer, donating your plasma is blood is a good way because that is used in a lot of cancer treatments. I do that also

Mencap were a charity I always had heard of, but didn’t really know what they did. Looked it up after Alex from Traitors mentioned it (and indirectly raised alot of money for them) and was amazed at the scope of stuff they did. Amazing work.

Titasaducksarse · 24/08/2025 22:28

I've a DD with The Dogs Trust...but I want to cancel however they make that process near impossible to navigate!

Otherwise I tend to donate as I've had a bit extra, a premium bond win or if there's a particular humanitarian crisis. Christmas i always feel guilty so £50 goes somewhere worthy too.

Can you just delete the direct debit from your bank account?

squashyhat · 25/08/2025 03:46

I donated to the RNLI for many years and think they are a fantastic organisation. However they are one of the better-known charities and more likely to attract support. So recently I changed to the Mission to Seafarers after reading a fantastic book (recommended on MN) about container ship crews. They started as a Christian organisation but now work to bring physical and mental aid and support to the nearly 2 million sailors worldwide working in often dangerous, dirty and lonely conditions to bring us the goods which our lifestyles have come to depend on.

youalright · 25/08/2025 04:41

I donate to gosh as I was in and out of their for 16 years I also donate to samaritans as iv lost people to suicide and struggled myself. Then I also just like to give randomly like to homeless, go fund me or if anyone is doing anything locally.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 25/08/2025 04:56

A local hospice and a dog charity that I got my amazing dog from.

Meadowfinch · 25/08/2025 05:25

I don't donate to charity but I fundraise for Cancer Research because I've been through treatment and understand how badly funds are needed. So far I've raised about £1,000

I also worked for a search and rescue team for 10 years as a volunteer, giving up my time every week. We had to fund all our own kit and transport.

Wotrewelookinat · 25/08/2025 05:35

Direct debit to RNLI (DH and DDs are sailors) and local Wildlife Trust. Other donations as and when someone asks for sponsorship and its a charity I want to support.

Mikart · 25/08/2025 06:40

Papyrus...I lost ds to suicide last year and we've raised over £30000 in his name.
RNLI ...always have done
Local hospice
I dont give to animal charities.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 25/08/2025 06:57

I run a small charity and it has made me stop supporting most larger charities (including some in your OP, I’m afraid) because the amount of overhead and spending on social media staff and the like is very high.

I will support local or named appeals for things and I am more likely to donate physical items (dog food, dried pasta, whatever).

Like PP I sometimes spend my own money and don’t claim it back at work - the last thing was a microwave and some bedding for a mum and children leaving a DV situation.
