I am on a low income and am in debt but still donate a little each month to the following and so I wondered who other people donate to…

Unicef - in the hope and belief they are a trust worthy charity supporting vulnerable children across the world, they also do a lovely Xmas advent calendar. I wonder if they are the best to increase my donation to for the people in Gaza.

Refuge - I believe wholeheartedly in safe spaces for women and children

Great Ormand St hospital - I’m very fortunate to have healthy children and my heart goes out to parents who alongside caring for ill children, having to worry about travel costs and accommodation etc.

At Christmas I usually do a one off donation to Sense a charity for deaf and blind children and my kids choose a charity to give a donation, currently WW (for rhinos).

Regular monthly donations to Unicef, Save the Children and Water Aid. I just believe in their missions I guess.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 25/08/2025 07:27

Just small SEN charities or occasionally BHF or cancer research. I don't have any DD anymore, it's just ad hoc. I did have a DD for guide dogs and a few Environmental groups but stopped all of them.

I'd rather give to smaller charities I think without a CEO and lots of management employees. SOSSEN for example is a small national charity for SEN but there isn't a vast management and marketing team. They do so much totally free to the people who use their service too. It's a really visble, active charity that I can see working and I see the change they do first hand.

Small local charities in fields that have brought me joy. Nothing to those with staff on six figures.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/08/2025 07:37

I forgot to mention an annual donation to the local food bank every Christmas. We stopped doing adult presents a few years ago so I divert what I would have spent to the food bank instead.

I also charge myself an Amazon tax. I try not to buy from Amazon but if I have to, I buy something from a local charity's wishlist as well.

I did foster a pet for a domestic abuse charity (they place pets in foster homes whilst supporting the person to leave their abusive situation, then the pet can be returned once the person is settled). I only got to do that once though as I ended up keeping the pet😍 Shout out to Endeavor Project in Bolton.

I have a direct debit to the local air ambulance branch and DH has one to our local church. My friend organises a MacMillan coffee morning every year so I donate to that. I always support friends who are raising money for charity by running a marathon or something.

Local food bank & Women for Refugee Women, but I mainly contribute by volunteering for my local cat rescue, where my cat came from. Every one of us involved is a volunteer & I know all the money goes on the cats.

Lesina · 25/08/2025 07:47

A charity which protects pangolins
St Martin’s in the field
save the children
the red cross
Medicines sans frontiers

Iocainepowder · 25/08/2025 07:49

I don’t donate money as I don’t like the idea of charities pissing it up the wall and mismanaging it. But I donate items to baby and clothing banks, including nappies etc

FlipperSkipper · 25/08/2025 07:51

Monthly DD to the local cat rescue we got our cats from.

Bits to the food bank when I go shopping, with a big shop for them at Christmas when the shop will match donate.

Support charity events at work.

I did a big fundraising event for the hospital which treated my husband’s cancer.

I also donate ad hoc when people do sponsored events, and to crowd funders that I believe in.

lokijet · 25/08/2025 07:57

Oxfam, unicef, world vision action aid and a local children’s hospice - all by DD with charity claiming the tax relief

TheFallenMadonna · 25/08/2025 08:01

Direct debits to Oxfam, local hospice and Anthony Nolan.

hattie43 · 25/08/2025 08:01

I make an annual donation to a horse charity in memory of my horse .
I make monthly donations to a local animal rescue centre . I do an as and when the war cry goes out for another local rescue centre needing items bought off their Amazon list . My main one is several large donations to the rescue centre I had 4 dogs from .
All animal charities.

sciaticafanatica · 25/08/2025 08:12

Local hospice & local animal shelter

Yachties · 25/08/2025 08:29

I have a dd for cancer research, NSPCC and an air ambulance charity. Small amounts.
i give to go fund me / just giving for causes I feel passionate about.
However I worked for a well known charity some years ago and a friend of mine worked for another and we both agreed that they waste a lot of money at their headquarters. I’m a bit sceptical now and don’t set up anymore dd.
i actually wrote to cancer research and asked them to stop sending out pens and mail because I want my money spent on cancer research not ‘gifts’ to thank donors.

Rocknrollstar · 25/08/2025 08:30

I give to Crisis and to a medium size charity that my DD works for in the hope that it keeps going and she has a job. It isn’t well paid - no charity jobs are - but she likes it and is happy there and they do good work.

WhatAWetLettuce · 25/08/2025 08:35

A local secondary school's charity, a local women's refuge and a local animal rescue. The school was incredible when my DC was unwell and offered counselling twice a week, the refuge because life is fragile and I've always believed that anyone could end up there by circumstance, the rescue because they are good people providing a much needed service.

I don't give to nationals/big charities, to many inefficiencies built in.

Toomanywaterbottles · 25/08/2025 08:36

If you are low income and in debt, I wouldn’t donate to anything.

I donate to my local hospice and a local cancer charity.

I’d never donate to Great Ormond Street - known in health circles as God’s Own Spot. It’s very well funded and has a slick marketing team. There are other children’s hospitals in the country!

caringcarer · 25/08/2025 08:37

Cats protection league monthly donation. My favourite charity.

Xmas give money to Toby Carvery to feed homeless a Xmas dinner. Usually pay for 4.

One offs Poppy day £10, Pudsy Bear £10, Red for Ruth £10 and occasionally sponsor a DC £10.

I sometimes give £10 if I see an appeal I wish to support.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 25/08/2025 08:40

I won’t give to big charities anymore. So many of them have been disappointments whether through the waste of money, scandals like oxfam or supporting gender bullshit which is harming women and children.

The Red Cross lost me years ago when they would call on an almost weekly basis asking for more money. It didn’t stop when i asked them not to call anymore so they lost my donations.

Now I give to allergy charities as my children both have severe allergies and will donate to individual cases fighting to preserve women’s rights from the current onslaught of gender craziness.

Giddykiddy · 25/08/2025 08:42

Monthly direct debits to Battersea dogs home
Water aid
Havens children's hospice
London air ambulance
A homeless charity
I also donate to most people I know raising funds for charitable causes.

ACynicalDad · 25/08/2025 08:43

Small international children’s charities it’s my thing.

AlwaysBeingMe · 25/08/2025 08:45

Direct debit each month to Diabetes UK.

I just avoided Type2 by new diet and weight loss jabs - I know not for everyone but worked brilliantly for me.

vdbfamily · 25/08/2025 08:45

We give to charities that we have some links to such as a National youth work charity, TEAR fund, International Needs( sponsor 2 children through their schooling) but largest donation is to our local church, who in turn support a lot of charities.
Personally I think time is more difficult to give and much needed. I condensed my work hours to give me a day off but then discovered a local charity for homelessness and have been volunteering in their drop in day centre weekly. My DH spends Monday nights walking the streets with another volunteer, handing out clothes/ toiletries/ sleeping bags/ food and advice.

BCBird · 25/08/2025 08:46

Donate to my union charity, Water Aid, Cancer Reaearch, Guide Dogs regularly and occasionally Fare Share, The Trussell Trust Refuge, Alzheimers and Mind. If a few of my pounds can make a difference, why not ?

30Plants · 25/08/2025 08:56

Small charities, recently I’ve chosen - counselling service for suicidal people, a local school which helps ages 4-7 year olds with severe behavioural problems. Domestic violence refuge. Prisoner rehabilitation charity.
