I am on a low income and am in debt but still donate a little each month to the following and so I wondered who other people donate to…

Unicef - in the hope and belief they are a trust worthy charity supporting vulnerable children across the world, they also do a lovely Xmas advent calendar. I wonder if they are the best to increase my donation to for the people in Gaza.

Refuge - I believe wholeheartedly in safe spaces for women and children

Great Ormand St hospital - I’m very fortunate to have healthy children and my heart goes out to parents who alongside caring for ill children, having to worry about travel costs and accommodation etc.

At Christmas I usually do a one off donation to Sense a charity for deaf and blind children and my kids choose a charity to give a donation, currently WW (for rhinos).

I give to Crisis and Shelter, Trussell Trust and am looking at the moment about the best way to donate for aid to Gaza. Sometimes DA charities. I don’t really donate to health causes, because I feel like lots of others do.

Whilst I want to support these charities it makes me absolutely fucking furious that agencies doing essential work are relying on charitable funding to feed poor families and tackle things like homelessness.

I give all my "charity" money to supporting women's rights issues. Every month there are cases needing funding and I'm happy to do my small bit that way.

If we didn't have to pay for all this nonsense to go away I'd be back to supporting a small charity like Linda Norgrave Foundation. https://lindanorgrovefoundation.org/ Wouldn't go near any of the large "corporate" ones.

LightDrizzle · 25/08/2025 09:17

Plan International - a legacy really, sponsoring a child but in reality Plan help the full community.

Linda Norgrove Foundation - trying to support women in Afghanistan, it must be incredibly difficult to do so now 😔

A charity, the name of which I forget, which funds communication aids for children in the U.K. That is because my daughter has benefited from one, thankfully state provided via SALT buy not everyone gets everything they would benefit from.

I support the local hospice that looked after my dad before he died. Plus RNLI as it’s the civil service charity so we do a lot of fundraising events through them.

Also the air ambulance as they do such fantastic work. And then I also support asthma Uk and do ad hoc appeals.

CharSiu · 25/08/2025 10:15

I don’t donate cash to charity but I have volunteered for a couple of charities for 20 years. I helped set one up and did things like studies in to the need for that charity and helped get grants and funding. I have done at least 5 hours per week for those years.

I like to support charities which help animals in parts of the world where animal welfare is poor and people don’t care. For example, Brooke supports working animals (horses and donkeys) that carry heavy loads in the heat and aren’t properly fed or looked after. They help educate people in how to look after their animals and grow food for them.

Yes, I donate to them as well. Lovely charity.

This is a very important charity , I will also do a ddr to support them .

Refuge- have supported them since I was a teenager. My dad was abusive to my mum when I was little, thankfully she was in a position to leave independently so I’ve always donated to help those who can’t

Migrant Offshore Aid Station - started supporting them during the Syrian refugee crisis when they were pretty much just a rescue boat off the coast of Malta saving people who got into trouble. They now do a huge variety of work in risk reduction and supporting migrants

Rainforest Coalition - helps developing nations protect their rainforests, when I researched it originally they were meant to be one of the most effective climate charities to support.

World Food Programme- recent addition, for Gaza

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 25/08/2025 11:05

I adopted a donkey as a christmas present for someone. I do that every year.

I'll always get a poppy and donate to any armed forces charity if I have cash on me.

I did my bit for animal charities by adopting rescue cats.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 25/08/2025 11:10

I have a direct debit to women’s aid, mainly as a reaction to what Mumsnet has opened my eyes to.

hiredandsqueak · 25/08/2025 11:11

The Salvation Army largely because when my Grandmother abondoned my Father and his brother for two years as young teens The Salvation Army ensured they didn't freeze and starve to death. My father worked around school to pay the rent but he couldn't earn enough to keep him and his brother.
My father gave generously to them throughout his life in recognition of what they had done for him and on his death I took over. I give monthly and donate a decent sum on my Father's birthday and at Christmas.

I try to avoid large charities apart from MSF, RNLI and air amulance.
The latter two save lives daily and rely on donations.
Otherwise very small local charities that help local people.
I never give to sponsorship requests.

Sheknowsaboutme · 25/08/2025 11:21

No one on a regular basis like direct debits

i give money towards the poppy appeal.
i sometimes buy food for the local animal shelter.
donate to the foodbank every now and then.
but i never give to those with buckets in supermarkets, "helping" you fill your bags. i do selfservice to avoid them

TigerRag · 25/08/2025 11:24

Nystagmus network as it's one of the conditions I have

I did raise some money for Rent UK last year as this is something my friends DD has

Denim4ever · 25/08/2025 11:25

Charities connected to family members I've lost are on my radar - Marie Curie, RNIB. I also donated a lot of our old things and the stuff from my parents house to two local charity shops. I'm friendly with the staff in Children's Society shop and I will probably become a volunteer there when I retire.

Chewbecca · 25/08/2025 11:33

I don't do regular DDs as we get asked to donate to others frequently enough for one reason or another.

I know I donate at least £300py to charities as it has its own line on my spreadsheet but it is never my choice of charity, it's the choice of the person asking! To do a monthly donation to my own charity choice, I would need to up my charity budget further or start saying No, neither of which is appealing!

Lavender14 · 25/08/2025 11:34

Donate to local charities I've worked for in the past as I feel confident in how my money will be used plus our local air ambulance.

Sellenis · 25/08/2025 12:05

Monthly to Give Directly, which seems like the most efficient use of my cash. I fund a research programme into UBI. I donate 2% of my wage, which feels ok to me, maybe it's too low, I don't know.

Then just randomly based on heartstrings, which means I'm not a very effective altruist oh well. Recently the Gaza famine appeal, a friend's cancer charity, Women's Aid, a local group in town, a homeless charity, and then a bunch of refugee orgs from my old work and which I know are really struggling at the moment.

CountryQueen · 25/08/2025 13:17

RNLI, Mountain Rescue, Air Ambulance, Local Hospice, School lottery
