So you’re admitting it’s based on racism? And not about helping the less fortunate?

This is a ridiculous comment. It is not racist to protect our own interests as a country. Every country must do so or it ceases to exist. What you are doing is equivalent to saying Palestinians are racist for not handing over Palestine to Israel. Or Ukrainians are racist for not simply letting Russia take over Ukraine.

WilfredsPies · 24/08/2025 18:55

Ahh, I see. You don’t know as much about immigration law as you think you do and instead of actually reading the Act and researching how long this particular law has been in place (hint, it’s older than me and has lasted through Tory and Labour governments) and asking what dealing with something administratively actually means, you’ve decided to double down on your position and insist that you’re right. Interesting approach.

I’ve had this discussion on a different thread with someone else who thought they’d understood it properly as well. All that happened is that we spent a few hours of them insisting they were right and me repeating that they were wrong. It was utterly futile, so I’m going to employ the Keanu Reeves approach. You’re absolutely right. Have a lovely evening.

It’s from 1971. I am not British and not sure who was in power. I didn’t think playing ‘Gotcha’ was your line but I see I was wrong

I'd happily house an asylum seeker for a fee per month, totally not an issue.

Have you let the council, immigration and refugees council know you're prepared to do this

Excellent! You need to call your local refugee housing department. Theyd love to hear from you

…you think our situation is the same as Ukraine? Or Palestine?! They’re totally incomparable, what an absurd thing to say.

We don't have one, I'm in the wilds of East Anglia. But all the government has to do is set up a scheme and I'm there. The only reason I didn't take a Ukrainian is that back then, I didn't have the space. I do now.

Would be great to have an opportunity to freshen up my Arabic too.

As soon as there's a national scheme, I'm in.

What is different to taking in ukranians for a fee per month, to housing these?

a poster on this thread said they’re were seeking asylum too.

Ukrainians are white - probably has a lot to do with it although it’s a ridiculous & sad notion (and racist of course). People are people & in need whatever their colour.

Why is it? You seem to think it racist for a country to say no to others entering and utilising their resources. Why doesn’t that apply to Ukraine or Palestine? Why are they not racist for using force to stop it?

I think it’s more to do with the fact that 90% of the Ukrainian refugees were women and children and the other 10% were elderly.

I was always a bit Hmmabout the number of young single men crossing the Channel until I saw the aftermath of the fleeing of Bashar al-Assad from Syria and the footage of one of the prisons the journalists had access to, where along with your everyday mundane sort of torture, electrocuting peoples genitals being a more popular choice, young men were crushed to death in a device designed for that purpose. Someone I know had the experience of going into a similar country where young men where chased around a sports stadium in a tank until they were too tired to continue and were run over. I think it is easy to believe that such atrocities are few and far between, but for a big old chunk of the world this is their reality and young fighting age boys and men are the biggest threats to these sort of regimes.
Now as the Mother of two boys, I am telling you that I would do everything in my power to get them out of that country to safety, to somewhere where they might stand a chance of (a better ) life, and if they succeed I might be able to join them at some later date, on a plane not a dinghy ! And if I couldn't at least I could live knowing they were safe.

You say Ukraine and Palestine is different precisely because you know it is NOT as matter of racism for the UK government to ensure British pensioners receive a pension.

Except that sexual assault is mostly carried out by Brits. By a massive majority. People keep trying to use this as an excuse but it falls flat on its face when you actually look at the statistics and realise that Brits commit most sexual offences in Britain. So instead of frothing about immigrants, you should be looking at how to prevent sexual offences in this country starting from educational age instead.

Of course brits commit more crimes in this country, we’re in Britain 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it’s not exactly a good idea to flood the country with complete strangers we have no idea about is it.

With your logic in mind… I assume you’re putting up homeless people in your house. What a great citizen ❤️

how many immigrants have you got in yours?

Now Assad’s regime has fallen, should we extradite all those who claimed asylum due to his regime?

Or, as the former Labour MP Angela Smith do elegantly expressed it, 'people with a funny tinge'.

just me!

But I wasn’t saying people should be taking strangers into their home, this other poster was. So I assumed she was leading by example.

TheYanster · 24/08/2025 18:25

You're not saying anything. We shouldn't be dependent on migrant workers, but we are. That's just the reality.

There are currently 32,000 asylum seekers in the UK awaiting decision on their status. We are a nation of 69 million. This is what it's being used by the likes of Farage to terrify a population of 69 million! This is all it takes to gaslight a nation

That's just the current asylum seekers waiting to have their applications decided. There were nearly 1million immigrants last year who settled here. It's disingenuous to imply the issue we have is with just 32k. It isn't. But you probably know that....

AnotherIrregularChoice · 24/08/2025 19:41

Three quarters of Asylum claims are granted, so it won't do to dismiss 'these people' as either 'illegals' or economic migrants. If you are coming from countries accepted as unsafe (Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia for example) that percentage rises massively. Likewise if you are coming from India or Vietnam (for example) you are highly unlikely to be granted Asylum.

Most Asylum claimants aren't coming from France by boat, they are arriving by air and UK is the first safe country reached.

Of course there are also would-be migrants attempting to reach UK to escape poverty, climate change or other natural disasters. They aim for UK because of the English language, just as West and North Africans tend to gravitate toward France and South Americans aim for Spain. If they can't substaniate an Asylum claim they will be removed from UK.

Lavender14 · 24/08/2025 19:43

Namelessnelly · 24/08/2025 11:51

But they are still here illegally. They may not have committed the crime, but they are here without following the proper laws. So illegal. This may not be their fault but then the government needs to crack down on the traffickers.

They are not here illegally if they have sought asylum and are waiting on their application being processed or it has been approved though as that's their right to do. That's not illegal irregardless of the method of entry to the country. Either they've committed a crime or they haven't. Language matters.

Dymaxion · 24/08/2025 19:43

@Browniesforbreakfast is the replacement safer ? It's early days and I genuinely hope that is becomes a Syria that the people feel safe in.

CunningLinguist2 · 24/08/2025 18:51

I am an immigrant in the .uK (white, professional, high earner, tax payer, in a job I took from no one as only I can do it - requires 6 languages, I own my house, claimed maternity pay once, no other “bennies”, so don’t worry!) but the racism and xenophobia on here is making me feel sick.
some of you need to have a fucking word with yourselves.

And you're someone who provides a skill we need here. I'm not sure why you think any of the current concerns about immigration affects you? We want a reduction in immigration so that our infrastrugture is not overwhelmed, but we also want to encourage quality over quantity. A bit like how Australia and Canada fo things - a points system. I have relatives in Canada and enquired some years ago about emmigrating there. I failed on points. Which is fair enough.

Livelovebehappy · 24/08/2025 19:49

Parker231 · 24/08/2025 18:52

Perhaps they already speak English and have friends and family in the uk.

So economic migrants then....
