Where are people buying good quality sofas from?

My beloved but ancient sofa.com sofa needs replacing. Their quality is shocking lately so I need one similar from somewhere else.

I don’t even know where to start. I haven’t bought a sofa from anywhere else for at least 10 years…! 😳

Find a non-chain sofa maker and upholsterer. Ask locally for recommendations, it might. E slightly dearer but will last generations and probably be recoverable and able to have parts replaced.

saying that, our current sofa was a quick purchase 6 years ago from furniture village and is going strong!

My sofas and armchairs are all mid-century ones that have been reupholstered. Much better quality.

We have a Parker Knoll which is excellent quality - they are still handmade in Nottingham.

Maker and son seem good
i am in the market too and just googled British handmade sofas. They are expensive - but I hope it’ll be the last sofa o ever buy!!!

piscofrisco · 24/08/2025 08:19

I got one from sofa club that I intended to be a cheapy for a rented house. It’s the most comfy sofa I’ve ever owned!

piscofrisco · 24/08/2025 08:19

As opposed to the very expensive but awful one I had before from Loaf.

Copperoliverbear · 24/08/2025 08:20

The sofa club, John Lewis, Parker Knoll, Barker & Stonehouse.
just some ideas or if you can, find a furniture maker.

Lafufufu · 24/08/2025 08:21

Not loaf.

We went in and tried some out and I was horrified

TeenLifeMum · 24/08/2025 08:21

We ended up going for dfs and I have to say I’m very happy and 4 years on they look like new (3 dc and 2 dogs I’m that time have been using them). I looked at loaf but when I sat on my friend’s one it was really uncomfortable.

TeenLifeMum · 24/08/2025 08:22

Ah just seen I’m not alone in my Loaf opinion. They look so pretty and cost so much - so disappointing.

Soupdragon3 · 24/08/2025 08:23

I got mine from Distinctive Chesterfields. Who were amazing, it was custom built and because I live in a flat they offer it to be made into 2 halves so they can get it up the stairs of my Victorian property, which you would never know when clipped together! There are 2 feet in the middle.
It’s very comfortable and a beautiful colour of which they had multiple choices.

In my old flat I’d previously ordered a love seat with matching foot stool from DFS and it was the most uncomfortable, disappointing purchase of 2021. It felt nothing like the one I’d sat on in the showroom.

*Edited to put DFS as I named a different supplier in error

We have a really lovely sofa, it seems excellent quality as it takes everything we throw at it in life with no problem. . We’ve had it 10 years and bought it from a second hand shop as we had very little money at the time.

No idea what make it is though.

if you don’t mind second hand then those places are worth a look.

My friend bought a new one from DFS (do they still exist) and after 5 years it was falling apart,

After many years of a fantastic still comfortable sofa from Marks and Sparks we sold it as it no longer matched our new decor. What a mistake. We bought a chaise sofa from Next after trying the model (without the chaise) in store. The sofa that arrived bore no resemblance comfort wise to the store sofa. It was like sitting on concrete with the exception of the chaise component which was so soft you had to plump the cushion every day. Which as it weighed nearly two stone and was an awkward shape was difficult. The chaise apparently was webbed while the rest of the sofa was sprung! After months of chasing customer services I gave in for my own sanity and got a local upholsterer to redo the cushions and re web the chaise. He wanted to make it all sprung but discovered the frame was too weak at the chaise end to support that option! I have now spent the same amount as the cost of the sofa just making it comfortable. The upholsterer will not recommend any maker as his experience is that while they often start well cost cutting at some point affects quality. We searched for nearly two years for these replacements and really struggled. Good luck!

I really rate Sofas and Stuff. Small chain, but they do have showrooms around. You can customise according to your needs, but you do pay for it.

Our Tetrad is 18 years old and still going strong. Just about to replace the seat covers but the rest of it is still fine.

I totally agree find an independent sofa company usually family run. I had excellent experience with a very established family run company they had G-Plan , Parker knoll , Sherington many long standing brands and they also made their own products. I would recommend them to anyone honestly I went in all the furniture stores and wasn’t impressed by the customer service staff in most were sat on sofas chatting.

thrive25 · 24/08/2025 08:40

@Autumnlife: please could you share the name of this company? Thanks

Ragruggers · 24/08/2025 08:52

Came on to recommend Parker Knoll as well. We got ours from a local independent furniture store.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 24/08/2025 09:00

We just bought a display set from furniture village and I have to say the quality is absolutely amazing we are so pleased. We’ve used DFs for years and thought when looking that their selection was a bit naff.

Coconutter24 · 24/08/2025 09:05

My last 2 have been sofology. The quality is great my first I bought and had for 10 years, it was in amazing condition and only got rid of it last year because we moved and it didn’t fit so got another from sofology

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/08/2025 09:13

Have a look at Darlings of Chelsea. Their customer service is excellent and the range of sofas and fabrics is vast.

springissprung2025 · 24/08/2025 09:57

I’ve had gorgeous huge velvet sofas from Habitat for a million years. Just wanted a change so gave them away. Currently have more modern habitat sofa which is good quality but not as comfortable. I always get feather cushions

HairyToity · 24/08/2025 10:00

We have a G Plan sofa from Furniture Village. Very comfortable.
