The Downton Abbey third movie is out on September 12th. Shall we have some fun predictions?

You may see from my username I’m a huge DA fan and have booked the day off work to drag a very reluctant DH along to see movie number 3 and watch its adorable ridiculousness.

Let’s do fun predictions as we know very little about the plot except that Lady Mary has got a divorce from the car man that she rushed into marrying. And Anna is pregnant.

Knowing how bonkers the franchise is, I’m looking forward to all its glorious nonsense

Ill start:

  • Despite the fact he ended the TV shows with probably Parkinson’s, Carson is inexplicably cured and the Butler again at the age of 108
  • the Crawley cousins, though clearly born years apart, will continue to appear to be around the same age.
  • Sir Richard Carlisle will, 10 years later, finally publish the scandal of Lady Mary shagging a Turk to death. Because despite the fact the whole of season 2 hinges on the fact he was holding her hostage on threat of publishing her secret in newspapers if she left him, she did indeed leave him and it NEVER got mentioned again
  • Something will happen again with a minor royal. They’ll meet little Princess Elizabeth and she will take a shine to one of the Crawley cousins, hinting that they could have been proper royalty had only they known she’d be queen one day. I know Julian Fellowes likes to cram in royal history in some way.
  • Despite the fact Robert has pissed his money up the wall all his life, buying a load of crap he doesn’t need and making terrible investments, Downton will be “in trouble” - only to be saved at the 11th hour presumably by some long forgotten rich relative who used to bump uglies with Maggie Smith
  • Mrs Hughes, a woman who can do far better than snobbish annoying old Carson, will run away with Molsley, leaving behind her inexplicably random marriage that had no chemistry
  • Dr Clarkson will misdiagnose someone. Again. Probably with pernicious anemia (they like that one don’t they)
  • Bates will do something annoyingly noble, to the detriment of him and everyone around him. Again. And it will be revealed that he did kill Vera. Because he so obviously did and everyone is deluded to think he was innocent

Wasn’t Cora ill?

It turned out it WASN’T pernicious anaemia which was a rehash of the Lord Merton storyline

JamMakingWannaBe · 24/08/2025 16:44

I'm far too excited for this...

Is Daisy going to be pregnant?
Where is Denka?
Are they going to win big money at the Races and the financial future of DA will be secured?

Wasn’t Cora ill at the end of the last one? Perhaps Dr Clarkson has made yet another misdiagnosis. Otherwise it’s a bit dark for something we all hope will be jolly/cosy. Going to miss the Dowager though….”I don’t know anyone who would threaten me behind the laurels”. Classic.

I think it was just pernicious anemia.

Dr Clarkson would totally be hauled up in front of the GMC these days. He misdiagnoses left right and centre!

He was right about poor Sybil though. It’s the one episode I won’t rewatch when he argues that she has preeclampsia and the fancy London doctor dismisses him. I find it heartbreaking

Loving all this. I’m so glad I’m not the only bored by Bates and Mary’s love interests. Think divorce would be a scandal. Not as much as having an illegitimate child though. But I love Edith and Bertie they are my favourites. Thomas is hilarious and I’d like him happy. Agree Daisy is a miserable one.

Fellowes take note I want a happy ending. <gavel>

Oh I thought it WAS pernicious anaemia, not cancer?

But yes Lord Merton has bog standard anaemia not pernicious anaemia 🤣Oopsy!

Ooh just thought I wonder if it’s 1929 and Wall Street crash, maybe that’s why Harold is back…

Probably writing problem page stories to Spratt 😂 that was one of my favourite story arcs, so cute

Agree about Daisy, she’s such a miser. Have no idea what Andy sees in her.

Her relationship with Mr Mason is cute though.

Ooh talking of Masons - what do we think Anna did to poor William that finished him off?

@ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat I literally watched it a week ago, she’d been told she was dying (unspecified but cancer implied ) and then Dr Clarkson came and said it wasn’t pernicious anemia after all. Either that or I’m losing the plot completely

Ah it’s been a while since I’ve seen the second movie but I do remember thinking that they are just rehashing illness stories now 🤣

Now Spratt was one of my absolute favourite side characters. His arched eyebrowed snobbery.
What will happen with Irish chauffeur? Didn’t he marry the heiress’s daughter (Maggie Smiths cousin played by whatshername off the ministry of magic in Harry Potter?) so surely eventually it will be he that inherits the abbey and his story arc will be complete? (Also I fancy him so I will be pleased).

Summerhillsquare · 24/08/2025 17:46

Oh yes Tom somehow inheriting the Abbey would be v satisfying.

BestIsWest · 24/08/2025 17:48

I loved Spratt too, he was one of my favourite characters.

Corinthiana · 24/08/2025 17:49

Dr Clarkson should have married Cousin Isobel and they could have set up some sort of clinic together. She loved working.

The Spratt actor is in Ted Lasso and is great in that too

BestIsWest · 24/08/2025 17:52

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit yes! I’ve watched that approximately 3 times too!

Quite the turn around for a Fenian!
Wouldn't George inherit, though?

Hedonism · 24/08/2025 18:01

National Trust, I reckon.

legsekeven · 24/08/2025 18:11

I thought Cora was waiting on test results. Cancer was suspected but it was anemia so all good

CoraPirbright · 25/08/2025 10:02

I so wish they would revisit the Larry Merton storyline and have him and his awful wife disinherited!! Agree that Daisy is a boring, whiney misery-guts. Excited to see why Harold is back. Loving Mary’s red dress in the trailer but sad we wont be seeing dishy Matthew Goode back.

topcat2014 · 25/08/2025 21:06

I've seen the new trailer with the flat. I hope it's not too sad an ending!

WhatsAWeekend · 26/08/2025 00:54

Seen the trailer too
Mary gets divorced
Theres speculation they lose Downton but Mary is seen with a new guy at Downton. So perhaps he’s moneyed and saves the day.

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/08/2025 01:16

The trailers show the rakish American brother/uncle who will have lost all the money when the banks collapse in the Great Depression.

The scandal will be Pamuk. Lady Mary will act in a film to be even more scandalous and win the first Oscar! Mary and her new husband (whoever it will be) with George and a baby on the way will
take over the Abbey and Lord and Lady will retire to the Dowager house.
