The Downton Abbey third movie is out on September 12th. Shall we have some fun predictions?

You may see from my username I’m a huge DA fan and have booked the day off work to drag a very reluctant DH along to see movie number 3 and watch its adorable ridiculousness.

Let’s do fun predictions as we know very little about the plot except that Lady Mary has got a divorce from the car man that she rushed into marrying. And Anna is pregnant.

Knowing how bonkers the franchise is, I’m looking forward to all its glorious nonsense

Ill start:

  • Despite the fact he ended the TV shows with probably Parkinson’s, Carson is inexplicably cured and the Butler again at the age of 108
  • the Crawley cousins, though clearly born years apart, will continue to appear to be around the same age.
  • Sir Richard Carlisle will, 10 years later, finally publish the scandal of Lady Mary shagging a Turk to death. Because despite the fact the whole of season 2 hinges on the fact he was holding her hostage on threat of publishing her secret in newspapers if she left him, she did indeed leave him and it NEVER got mentioned again
  • Something will happen again with a minor royal. They’ll meet little Princess Elizabeth and she will take a shine to one of the Crawley cousins, hinting that they could have been proper royalty had only they known she’d be queen one day. I know Julian Fellowes likes to cram in royal history in some way.
  • Despite the fact Robert has pissed his money up the wall all his life, buying a load of crap he doesn’t need and making terrible investments, Downton will be “in trouble” - only to be saved at the 11th hour presumably by some long forgotten rich relative who used to bump uglies with Maggie Smith
  • Mrs Hughes, a woman who can do far better than snobbish annoying old Carson, will run away with Molsley, leaving behind her inexplicably random marriage that had no chemistry
  • Dr Clarkson will misdiagnose someone. Again. Probably with pernicious anemia (they like that one don’t they)
  • Bates will do something annoyingly noble, to the detriment of him and everyone around him. Again. And it will be revealed that he did kill Vera. Because he so obviously did and everyone is deluded to think he was innocent

Of course. Plus Lavinia Swire. Spanish flu, my arse.

Way too convenient!

She also threw something into Matthew’s tyres?

Didnt it come to light that she attacked her mothers husband?!

Oh yes, Matthew's car. Very suspicious.

I feel I have seen so many trailers for this film that I could write it myself.

Yes I feel like I have seen Edith VERY uncharacteristically saying to Mary “You will be a sen SAY shun” about 1000 times.

On the trailer - would the upper classes really stop a ball in London and create a scene over a relatively lowly lady from Yorkshire getting a divorce? Doubt it

I loathe Mr Bates and always have so I hope he dies (an obviously noble and sanctimonious death) and Anna finally gets to be with someone who is more fun.
Cant wait for the film. I’m taking dd to uni on the 13th and it will be my salve the day after.

There used to be a subreddit for those of us who hate Mr Bates he’s AWFUL. And there’s no chemistry between him and Anna. He’s about 20 years older than her a 100x less attractive. I do accept once Brendan Coyle was a babe and a period drama legend, which is probably why they cast him, but he’s so out of her league it’s ridiculous.

But Bates is such a sanctimonious wanker. I can’t understand why he’s so popular amongst the staff and family.

😂

And Moseley will write it into a film, staring lady Mary 🎥

Am looking forward to the movie and love all these predictions!

piscofrisco · 24/08/2025 12:09

Aha-I’m glad I’m alone in my hatred of Boring Bates. I was team Thomas during their ongoing war of attrition.
My Old tabby cat was called Mr Pamuk after the dead Turk. He didn’t die the same way though .

BestIsWest · 24/08/2025 12:13

Bates hater here too. We usually FF all the bits with him in.

I was team Thomas too! I too would be annoyed if someone unqualified and incapable pipped me to the post of my dream job just because he’s mates with the boss.

Thomas is also hilarious with his deadpan wit. One line that always cracks me up is when Carson says “He wasn’t born standing to attention” and he replies something like “I hope not for his mother’s sake”🤣🤣

I’ve changed my username in solidarity OP 😄

Im hoping for a really good ending for Thomas
Im hoping there isn’t so much focus on Bates, I find him boring

Parking my fat arse on this thread for all things Downton. I thought everyone loved Bates so this threads been a eye opener, agree he his a bit boring and his storylines drags on for bloody years.

Could totally get on-board with Anna the murderer though.... they will give us flash backs to all the times Anna has put sugar in some poor souls tea... 😉

WhatsAWeekend · 24/08/2025 13:51

Just watched a trailer and Mary’s not looking so smug.
Is divorce on the horizon I mean they can’t keep telling us hubby is racing his cars somewhere.
The excuses last time weren’t believable

TheAutumnalCrow · 24/08/2025 13:54

Series 1 Episode 1 flashback.
Anna returns from a family visit to Southampton and starts to show an unhealthy interest in the fate of the Titanic. She seems relieved when His Lordship opines that the bearing mounts will never be recovered for examination.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/08/2025 13:55

Didn’t they make Andy the butler after Thomas ran off with guy?

I’ve just finished a rewatch too

Oh and Enid’s fiance! The one who “disappeared” in Germany. That’s got mr and Mrs bates fingerprints all over it

topcat2014 · 24/08/2025 14:22

Not sure why Thomas and the Dominic West character would bother coming back from USA though? Surely they would have had a better life there?

Making do watching Mrs Crocombe cooking demos on English Heritage Tik Tok for now (yes, I know it's older)

(My parent's house was built for servants and has bells by the fireplace, so I love Downton.)

Or maybe he’ll return alive…oo er

TheMadGardener · 24/08/2025 14:34

Just as long as they don't do anything to spoil Edith and Bertie's happy ever after. I love Bertie. Always thought it would have been awkward explaining to older Marigold why her younger siblings are Lord Peter/Lady Something Pelham whereas she's just Miss Crawley or Miss Adopted Pelham.

Never liked Mary so don't care if she has trauma. Agree that Bates storylines are always boring and need fast-forwarding through. I always found Daisy irritating too. The upstairs stuff was always more interesting than the downstairs stuff, apart from Thomas.

Me too, all those dull prison scenes, who cares?
I have no one to go with, I have one friend who loves it but she lives 400 miles away.
It's just so much more fun to have someone to pick over all the ridiculousness with.
When the series ended I think I missed the thread on here more than the show.😆

I LOVE Bertie and Edith, they’re so adorable and she really deserved happiness. I also love that she outranks Mary now.

Mary I couldn’t give two straws for. Her’s and Matthew’s love story was gorgeous and great entertainment but her courtships after her died were SO boring. And I hated that men scrabbling around to fix her up with other men, spending days praying about between the two of them. Dullsville

I was always hoping that he'd turn up. Possibly as a Nazi.
I agree that Edith and Bertie are cute. Marigold will find out at some point, possibly in Downton Revisited in 20 years.

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 24/08/2025 16:17

Maybe Matthew comes back from the dead? The car crash was a fake! He was kidnapped by the ghost of Lavinia and Poor Mr Pamuk, whacked over the head with something posh and heavy and has been living in a Ripon village, suffering from amnesia.

OP posts:
CoraPirbright · 24/08/2025 16:28

Wasn’t Cora ill at the end of the last one? Perhaps Dr Clarkson has made yet another misdiagnosis. Otherwise it’s a bit dark for something we all hope will be jolly/cosy. Going to miss the Dowager though….”I don’t know anyone who would threaten me behind the laurels”. Classic.
