The sport of kings: Mornington Crescent

Good morning, all. What better way to begin the long weekend than a new game of the ineffable Mornington Crescent? All are welcome - veterans and newbies alike.

To set the tone, I will start with one of my favourite moves - a double shunt to

Kew Gardens

Thank you Maud. I think I shall pop to West Brompton, as the weather is dull.

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/08/2025 10:31

Are there rules or no rules? I never understand this.

let’s go to Temple.

LlynTegid · 23/08/2025 10:31

I shall move to Fulham Broadway, one mentioned in a song by Ian Dury. I doubt he ever played the game of games, even though many stations were mentioned in his lyrics.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 23/08/2025 11:00

It all depends, RobinEllacotStrike, it all depends. As it’s the bank holiday weekend, we’re playing according to Stovold with the post-1961 amendments and updates.

It’s been years since I joined in one of these threads. Thanks for the rule clarification @ComeIntoTheGardenMaud. It’s so easy to forget the bank holiday protocols.

Would Dollis Hill be acceptable?

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/08/2025 11:04

Ok I’m up to speed now cheers Maud.

im off to West Kensington

Let’s not mention the 1987 incident that resulted in the very first suspensions.

Off to South Wimbledon.

Am I the only one who hates this game? As much as I love the show, I just don’t get this and it infuriates me because I feel stupid. Blush (Thank god for bbcSounds where I can skip it!)

TheWatersofMarch · 23/08/2025 11:26

Ah yes the Stovold/post 61 amendments… thanks @Maudfor this classic up from the 2007 finale, it would never have occurred to me, I’ll be chuckling all day. So give you
Bermondsey

Cursula · 23/08/2025 11:38

Is it too early on a Saturday to mention The Colonel? Probably, so I will keep schtum.

Aldgate East

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 23/08/2025 13:08

Ah. The Colonel. A mainstay of the MC circuit, although not seen so much following that unfortunate business in Antibes with the principal bassoonist and the consignment of watermelons. Fortunately, the capitaine of the gendarmerie was a devotee of the game of games (Paris version) and willing to turn a blind eye. Anyway, I digress.

This was a favourite move of the Colonel’s:

Turnham Green

This might be a risky one, considering the potential for some Swiss Cottage shenanigans, but here goes: Borough.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 23/08/2025 15:10

Gosh, Gotback! That’s audacious. One might almost say reckless.

Ealing Broadway

I think, very much like three dimensional chess, it takes time to develop fully in one’s mind.

Or indeed in one’s theory of mind.

I shall gently roll backward to safety at Upminster.

Gotback · 23/08/2025 15:20

Crikey! Alright then.

Totteridge & Whetstone.

LlynTegid · 23/08/2025 19:40

We should not be critical of those who are new to the game of games. It is not for everyone sadly, and the originators of the game brought a certain interest that may not be apparent in these modern times. Despite all that is going on in their country, there are French people who choose not to play their own game of games, Chatelet Les Halles, for similar reasons.

Woodside Park

Cursula · 24/08/2025 09:49

This morning brings sunshine and the teeniest of hangovers so in that (excess of) spirit I shall advance, sheepishly, to Barking

That scuppers my 'Blake Hall' then.

RobinEllacotStrike · 24/08/2025 11:44

Omg you’ve been Turnham Green already. I wasn’t expecting that.

Aldgate East

I played Aldgate East yesterday. Should we instigate the Weaversham penalty, or does the Committee not sit on a Bank Holiday weekend?

Arnos Grove

Gotback · 24/08/2025 16:39

Definitely Weaversham. It's Cockfostered the whole thing.

Charing Cross (Bank Branch).

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 24/08/2025 16:47

Let me pour oil on troubled waters.

Balham

OP posts:
Baital · 24/08/2025 16:49

Hmmmm. Balham.

It's a bit sneaky.

Holborn, though I might regret it

BitOutOfPractice · 24/08/2025 17:39

Ooo she’s bold!

Chalk Farm.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/08/2025 17:44

I’m relying on the Notting Hill Carnival proviso added in 1973 following the unfortunate Smythe incident (least said the better)
Earls Court
