The sport of kings: Mornington Crescent

Good morning, all. What better way to begin the long weekend than a new game of the ineffable Mornington Crescent? All are welcome - veterans and newbies alike.

To set the tone, I will start with one of my favourite moves - a double shunt to

Kew Gardens

Gosh, the pace certainly is quickening today. Gates are eastward but shuffles, if I recall correctly, are clockwise until midnight, which thus means

Fairlop

New players with lineage who join us. If you play like your grandmother Punks, I await your later moves with trepidation.

Holland Park

Itisallgoingtobeok · 01/09/2025 09:04

Hello all, a little late to the game, but hopefully you won’t mind if I join. I’ve only had 3 hours sleep, so hoping my judgement isn’t off here…

East Ham

VegimalCrudite · 01/09/2025 09:11

I was still under the table with the major from the last game, stuck on the Hainault loop.

Chancery Lane

LlynTegid · 01/09/2025 09:14

The Hainault loop being partly closed last week offered an opportunity for the rail replacement bus rule, which I thought could have got you out of that difficult situation.

Westwards a move to Perivale.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 01/09/2025 09:48

“Stuck on the Hainault loop”, VegImalCrudite? Is that a young person’s euphemism?

It is indeed a joy to see so many new and returning players.

Am I the only person who’s a little disappointed, now said station is back open, that there isn’t a little cheer when it is reached on the actual real life tube?

How about a short trip to Hayes and Harlington?

LittleBitofBread · 01/09/2025 10:15

Yes, I do tend to think there should be a fanfare, as on Ryanair when they successfully land the plane.
I can just imagine a little guerrilla art/ situationist project involving planting a small speaker and audio of some kind in one of the carriages, having programmed/wired it to go off at the apposite moment.

Burnt Oak (employing Sakorsky's Infinitam).

MassiveWordSalad · 01/09/2025 10:53

I must watch on wistfully and not be drawn in, since the notorious Carpender’s Park incident. It’s been a long time but the lengthy stay in a Swiss sanatorium is still fresh in my mind, so let me be a salutary lesson that the Leichenberg stratagem is not to be toyed with. I fear I’ve said to much.

VegimalCrudite · 01/09/2025 11:22

I hope you appreciated the lengthy letters Massive, I’m assuming you found the small packet of Hobnobs hidden under each stamp?

I think there is a plaque at Mornington Crescent. In the future I’m going to exclaim every time I go through it.

I’m a bit out of touch, due to the Majors false leg. Are we still using |||.I2/66 subsection C?

Hampstead (Edgware branch, we need the depth if we are using subsection C.)

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 01/09/2025 14:10

Indeed we are, VegimalCrudite, indeed we are, although the mere mention of Leichenberg makes me feel that, for the next five moves, we should adopt the Hawksmoor Protocol as a precaution. In that spirit:

St Paul’s

And if you are as crafty as your name suggests@Creu, I had better keeps my wits about me! 😁

As it's the first of the month, I'm going to deploy Onslow's Slam to take us to Lambeth North.

Creu · 01/09/2025 19:25

Goodness me! I haven’t seen an Onslow’s Slam for a few years.

In response, I’m going to quickly dust off a Goodwin’s Hopper and take us to Mudchute

Worryingly, I had heard on the QT that there was to be a high-level review of the use of the Onslow Slam during the meteorological autumn months? I hope that's been scuppered.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 01/09/2025 20:02

Well, here you are. First of September in a non leap odd numbered year so I believe the use of the Schnabel underplay is accepted-indeed compulsory! So I parlay to Tottenham Court Road.
I shall be incommunicado for a few weeks as needs must I scarper, mean sojourn to Antipodean climes. If Mater comes looking, you ain't seen me right?

TragicMuse · 01/09/2025 20:08

Ahem @TheAutumnCrow you need to play a move…

as do I. Camden Town

VegimalCrudite · 01/09/2025 20:43

Touché Tragic.

Magnificent use of Hawksmoor-Goodwin.

Ive been waiting for this since my first cucumber and gin sandwich.

Ongar

Creu · 02/09/2025 13:13

Ah the silencer’s grin.

Off we go to Blackhorse Road.

LlynTegid · 02/09/2025 13:44

That was close, moving to Camden Town. The Suffragette line rule gets us well away over to Barking.

TragicMuse · 02/09/2025 14:11

sometimes one has to be what the groom would call ‘a chancy bugger’…

Limehouse. Just my little Easter egg for those that know me!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/09/2025 14:31

Oh, TragicMuse. You are a minx! Four more than Chekhov had:

Seven Sisters

OP posts:
LittleBitofBread · 02/09/2025 15:33

Hoppers and Slams; good heavens, that takes me right back!
And mention of Chekhov has inspired me to use a Russian Adage to send us over to Pimlico, which will hopefully keep us out of the Slidings.

DuckonaBike · 02/09/2025 21:43

Woo hoo! Vertical shunt to Warren Street

Cursula · 03/09/2025 00:16

After an incredibly long lunch at what used to be the Atlantic Bar I feel a riverside stroll coming on…so off to Putney Bridge but I realise diehard MCs could call this a breach of Section 123 (Pt1). Toodle pip.

Baital · 03/09/2025 00:19

Sorry to do something so basic, but it's getting late, so a double back flip twist to Ealing Broadway
