Thinking of booking this as it’s one of the few musicals I’ve never seen. Is it any good? Will I need tissues?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/08/2025 21:36

Yes go!

It's a stunning production. Maybe one tissue.

Rocknrollstar · 22/08/2025 21:38

Amazing production. I needed two or three tissues.

VisitationRights · 22/08/2025 21:38

I love it. Saw it as a teenager with my mum and she cried and I didn’t get it. As an adult I saw it live again and this time I didn’t cry as it hit differently.

Love it! I’d say it’s more feel-good, humorous and thoughtful rather than sad.

ByLemonFish · 22/08/2025 21:39

We saw it 2 weeks ago. Excellent

XelaM · 22/08/2025 21:42

I absolutely LOVED IT when I saw it a few years ago. I hope it's a similar production as it was absolutely AMAZING. Even my usually non-excitable teenager loved it 😻

Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree · 22/08/2025 21:42

I saw it recently at the Barbican and it was a fantastic production. I would highly recommend it.

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 22/08/2025 21:47

Aw I’m pleased it’s got good reviews! I’m gonna book for Manchester.

I ask because I spent a small fortune on Hamilton a few years ago in good faith, I know we are meant to think it’s the best thing since sliced bread but I just sat there bemused and not having a clue what was being said/going on for 3 hours.

I also didn’t enjoy Six 🙊 <ducks>

It's absolutely brilliant.. I went a few weeks ago in London and would have gone again the next day if I could! Just pure enjoyment from start to finish!

I'm with you on Hamilton... I love musicals but not Hamilton!

FatEndoftheWedge · 22/08/2025 22:46

Op I've seen the musical on TV and I'm booked for the stage production however Im hoping it's not too sad ?

XelaM · 22/08/2025 23:31

Off topic, but why don't PP's like Hamilton?! I've seen in on stage twice and have the soundtrack in my car so know it almost by heart. What's not to understand about it? It's pretty self-explanatory

ExcellentDesign · 22/08/2025 23:42

I saw it at The Barbican recently and it was brilliant, poignant but not too many tissues needed. I loved Hamilton too but think you need to either be familiar with the story or the soundtrack beforehand to get the best out of it.

I actually don’t mind some songs on the soundtrack, but I struggled to understand the speed of what they were saying in the theatre, and I knew very little about the American Revolution so just found it hard to follow. And I’m really not into rap. I just thought it was so overrated.

A lot of people have said the same as you about Hamilton, OP

Silverbirchleaf · 23/08/2025 18:41

Watched Hamilton on tv. Dh and I turned it off within 20 minutes. Just didn’t get it and found it boring.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/08/2025 18:43

I’m booked to see Fiddler as well

loved Hamilton

Absolutely HATED Six though - and it’s so popular

Bodyshopdewberry · 23/08/2025 18:46

Hamilton works of you're tuned into the different rap and hip hop styles of the 80s and 90s. If you can't tell your grandmaster flash from your salt-n-pepa then a lot of it probably goes over your head.

VerbenaGirl · 23/08/2025 18:50

Saw it last month. It was amazing. My husband came along somewhat reluctantly and also very much enjoyed it.

Denim4ever · 23/08/2025 19:04

Sunrise,Sunset sung properly is a couple of tissues. Very popular at weddings not so long ago.

That's such a wonderful song. It does make me shed a tear!
The music is fantastic though and it's genuinely feel good - you'll love it, OP.

Same - everyone raves about it!

I think I just hate modernised historical works of fiction eg Bridgerton. I prefer authentic portrayals. I appreciate it’s hard to make an authentic portrayal of the wives of Henry VIII with catchy pop songs though 🤣 but the concept of his wives being BFFs was more than my imagination could take.

Mediocre songs too

I've got tickets for this production and am really looking forward to it. I've seen the film many times and a few stage versions. Interestingly I saw Topol in a revival of it about 30 years ago...and he wasn't very good! He'd obviously played the part to death, knew he was the huge draw and overacted like mad. I've seen better Tevye's in local amateur productions.
I saw Hamilton recently too and it was OK. Quite underwhelmed, except for the excellent King.

The king was based on Hugh Laurie's king George from Blackadder because hugh and Lin Manuel worked on House together when he was writing the musical.

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 23/08/2025 19:20

Yes the King was the only enjoyable bit of Hamilton and I enjoyed the many renditions of You’ll Be Back

I saw it a few weeks ago in Leeds. It's my fave musical in the whole world anyway and I could be in the film I've seen it so many times. Go....it's fab!!! 😊
