Thinking of booking this as it’s one of the few musicals I’ve never seen. Is it any good? Will I need tissues?

Sunrise,Sunset sung properly is a couple of tissues. Very popular at weddings not so long ago.

It makes me weep every time I hear it ☺️

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/08/2025 19:23

@ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat I likened it to a sub par Little Mix tribute. They were only on stage for just over an hour. I saw it for a big birthday in the West End and I was gutted.

Housewife2010 · 23/08/2025 19:30

My daughter and I often sing "Matchmaker" when we're hanging the washing out together. My other favourite song in it is "To Life."

@ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat I love your name. I've often quoted that. 🤣

Was going to be taken to Six as a treat but sold out super fast .
Was swithering over fiddler but will probably go now .
Tried to watch Hamilton on Disney during Covid . All set up comfy seats snacks etc. We didn’t get past 10 minutes!

Same - everyone raves about it!

I think I just hate modernised historical works of fiction eg Bridgerton. I prefer authentic portrayals. I appreciate it’s hard to make an authentic portrayal of the wives of Henry VIII with catchy pop songs though 🤣 but the concept of his wives being BFFs was more than my imagination could take.

Mediocre songs too

Don’t see &Juliet then, OP 😬😆

Have tickets for the Fiddler tour, haven’t seen it before either, looking forward to it

Silverbirchleaf · 23/08/2025 19:47

& Juliet was a clever concept, and I really enjoyed it.

In a Fiddler On The Roof/Hamilton crossover, Lin Manuel Miranda and his entire wedding party performed To Life at his wedding. It’s available on YouTube

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 23/08/2025 19:58

It's a proper old school (well 60s) musical. It was my dad's favourite, I can still see him singing along in the car. We sang Sunrise in a school choir competion, still remember all the words. I'd love to go.

I actually don’t mind some songs on the soundtrack, but I struggled to understand the speed of what they were saying in the theatre, and I knew very little about the American Revolution so just found it hard to follow. And I’m really not into rap. I just thought it was so overrated.

I watched Hamilton on Disney+ and LOVED it. But I had subtitles to help me, and could pause as well. I guess I would feel as bemused as you if I've watched it for the first time in a theatre. It's too fast, not easy to understand and demands a lot of previous knowledge of American history. Once you get past all that, it's genius.

I tried to listen to Six's soundtrack and couldn't get past the first few songs. Tried videos as well. I really wanted to like it but didn't work for me.

It was just because the OP said she didn’t like modernised historical works of fiction and said she prefers authentic portrayals!

DryAndBalmy · 23/08/2025 20:25

It’s WONDERFUL. The most wonderful music and you’ll likely see some amazing dancing too.

It’s a really interesting look into the lives of Jewish family in the (Ukrainian/ Belorussian/ Polish) shetl at the time of terrible pogroms, early 1900s.

All aspects of life are dictated by tradition but the daughters of the family are starting to break away from that and choose their own paths.

The ending is sad but leaves us with some hope and possibilities too.

I’d say it’s my favourite musical of all time.

Book now!

StaringAtTheWater · 23/08/2025 21:11

I love Fiddler on the Roof! It's one of my favourite musicals (along with the very un-PC Calamity Jane). I recently saw the barbican production which was great.

I didn't love Hamilton much when I first saw it, but since then I've watched it on Disney and listened to the soundtrack a lot and I like it a lot more now - it's a lot to take in and follow first time around!

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 23/08/2025 21:16

I love the 60’s musical vibe, my favourite (though technically it’s 50’s) is Music Man, has been since I was tiny and my dad recorded it on VHS for me. I knew the full lyrics to 76 trombones before I knew how to recite the alphabet!

Incredible production and I don’t usually like musicals. All time favourite.

Ketzele · 23/08/2025 21:30

It's fabulous, much better than Hamilton or Six! It's sad, but not in a tear jerry way, more leaves you pondering about the future of the characters, and the shadow of the Holocaust.

Fantastic tunes, and the wedding 'cup' dance is a joy.

I really, really love all the songs but my absolute favourite is the Sabbath Prayer.

It’s so poignant. Little do Tevye and Golda know, as they pray for God to send husbands who will care for their daughters, that two future husbands are sitting right there at their very table.

Ketzele · 23/08/2025 21:34

Oh, and I saw it in Chichester, with Omid Djalili as Tevye. It was wonderful and well worth the expensive tickets; unfortunately, my gran was vomiting in her handbag beside me, and had to be taken home.

MistressRoydon · 23/08/2025 22:03

Who plays Tevye and Golda? I’ve seen some seriously hammy ones so was worrying about this touring production and debating whether to go or not. But I loved Hamilton and Six

Housewife2010 · 24/08/2025 08:08

Miracle of Miracles is another joyous, gorgeous song.
I watched South Pacific yesterday afternoon. I hadn't seen it for years. One of my all time favourite musical soundtracks. I still swoon at Rossano Brazzi as Emile too.

Partridgewell · 24/08/2025 08:14

My DD was in it years ago at school (a huge state school with an amazing drama department) and I was absolutely blown away by how good it was. The lad who played Tevye is now a professional singer and Golde was outstanding too. I only knew If I Were a Rich Man but it didn't matter - the other songs are so catchy.

I went to see the touring production in Nottingham yesterday with my DH and kids (21,19,11) and we all loved it. My favourite song is Sabbath Prayer - makes me cry every time.

Enjoy OP!

I don’t like the more modern musicals with modern shouty songs. I prefer the more lyrical ones where you can hear the words and tune.

And I sound just like my granny! 😅

Same! I could watch Roger and Hammerstein musicals all day long (that may actually be my bank holiday sorted)

For all you musical lovers, can I derail the thread slightly, and put a shout out for ‘Just for one day’ based on Live Aid. It’s superb, and makes you feel like a teen again (if you were a teen in the eighties). It’s cleverly written so would appeal to teens as well.
