@Fernticket I was just going to post 'The Singing Ringing Tree' when I saw yours! Weirdest programme ever!

I recently rewatched it on YouTube It was in colour whereas I thought it was in black and white when I was a child, but maybe we hadn't got colour TV

No, definitely Juke Box Jury, Janice Nichols from Birmingham and it was 'Oi'll give it foive'.

Juke Box Jury had pop stars or what passed for celebrities at the time on the panel usually.

Here's Janice Nicholls looking very sixties 'dolly bird' 😁

ETA: And on JBJ they held up 'hit' or 'miss' rather than give scores

TellingBone · 24/08/2025 20:43

That was Thank Your Lucky Stars 😁

Sorry but it was Jukebox Jury.

Sorry but you’re wrong. Juke Box Jury didn’t give numerical scores, it was judged on ‘hit or miss’. ‘I’ll give it five’ was a catchphrase coined by then teenager Janice Nicholls on the show ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’. The show featured a Spin-a-Disc segment. Guest DJs and a teenage panel would review new songs, with Janice Nicholls being one of the teenagers on the panel.

As a proud Scouser, I do have to mention some more negative examples - Harry Enfield’s “Calm down, calm down” and “Eh, eh, eh, eh!” and the Yosser Hughes “Gis a job”
These popularised (mis)characterisations that the people from Liverpool are largely unemployed (the implication being they are simply job shy generational abusers of the benefits system and/or thieving scallies constantly on the scrounge), as well as aggressive, loud, gobby, overly sensitive, inarticulate cadgers

Blimey, you’ve totally misinterpreted the Yosser Hughes character and the whole point of the programme. If others interpreted it like that, that’s on them. It wasn’t the intention of the author.

Edited

And the author was a Scouser himself !!

Juke Box Jury had the ‘hit and miss’ system of scoring rather than by numerical scores. It was ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’. Janice Nicholls was part of a teenage panel on a segment of the show called ‘Spin a Disc’ where they and a guest DJ would review new songs. Nicholls coined the phrase in a Brummie accent and the public adopted it - it was actually also recorded as a song.

LlestriBran · 26/08/2025 07:51

"You've all done very well"
"Thank you Mr Grace"

CherryRipe1 · 26/08/2025 08:09

Wassat button over there for? Ah ah ah ah ahhh!
My friend lived near that car lot in Shepherds Bush where "Allo John' was filmed. The cars were mostly priced at £49.99 or £99.99 for more "luxury" models. They were unsafe heaps of junk with dubious MOTs and we went there a couple of times posing as customers to take the pee & haggle to a rather nonchalant car salesman.

“I’ve got the key” when leaving the house/hotel room. Always followed by “I’ve got the secret” but my DCs have no idea why.

“Badger parade is off” when passing a deceased badger on the road. (Harry Hill). Drove past a bin bag in the road and my DD said “Bin bag parade is off” which made me laugh more than it probably should have!

I always sing I’ve got the key, I’ve got the secret when leaning the house….

Catpiece · 26/08/2025 13:19

“Open the box!”
”Take the money!”

PistachioTiramisu · 26/08/2025 13:44

I am not a number; I am a free man.

Yes me! "Look right, look left, look right again, and when it's all clear, cross the road."

Another one lost on the DC when we see an animal head mounted on a wall: "He must have been going a hell of a speed!"

healthybychristmas · 26/08/2025 16:21

I think this is why I wouldn't want a relationship with someone who wasn't my generation.

Yes, still got a badge somewhere.

Peculiar23 · 26/08/2025 17:11

Drat, Drat and double drat - Dick Dastardly
Officer Dribble... I mean Dibble - Topcat (The cop are sometimes referred to as the Dibble by Mancunian jack the lads and I bet they have no idea why)

Here's one I made earlier - Blue Peter
You need an empty washing up liquid bottle and sticky back plastic - Blue Peter
Ask an adult to help - Blue Peter - Often used today in situations with difficult or dangerous piece of equipment, like an iron or washing machine.

YelloDaisy · 26/08/2025 18:36

I don’t remember what dangerous thing Tufty was doing but Mummy couldn’t call out a warning as she was hanging out the washing and had clothes pegs in her mouth ‼️

SevenSecondsAgo · 26/08/2025 18:57

Whenever I see someone completely messing up a simple task, I shout 'You're doing really well!' in the style of contestants cheering each other along on The Crystal Maze.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 26/08/2025 22:59

Not read the full thread yet so someone else may have said these already but...
All the colours in all the sizes
Maureen me love

And I'm so glad others have posted 'just the one Mrs Wembley' as I'd started thinking I'd dreamt it because no one I was saying it to got the reference!

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 26/08/2025 23:03

I’m late 50s and don’t know half these, maybe I am too old. I do know what Rickrolling is though.

A couple of years ago we had a rather tricky customer at work whose name was Cyril. After he left I looked at my boss (similar age to me) and said “Nice one Cyril”. He laughed but none of the youngsters had a clue.

Maybe as far back, maybe not. Esther Rantzen used to say 'And finally Cyril'
