Apology plums?

Yesterday, one of our neighbours came over to speak to me - she wanted to apologise if she was “rude to my friend.”

The friend in question isn’t my friend, she’s my partner’s ex wife, and the neighbour wasn’t rude - she was blocking her drive to asked her to move.

I thanked her for coming over but said there was no need to apologise because she wasn’t rude at all, so please not to worry.

Today. She’s brought us a bag of plums off her tree. Never done that before, so we’re assuming it’s linked to the totally unnecessary apology.

Will fruit keep arriving until she’s forgiven herself for something she didn’t do? Are we supposed to return the favour - because I don’t have any fruit growing?

Help me understand the etiquette and next steps 😂.

She's probably got plums coming out of her ears and needed an excuse.

I've got pears coming out of mine and nobody to foist them on currently.

farmfreshmilk · 21/08/2025 21:23

It’sa crazy year for fruit. She will be looking for any excuse to give them away!

Don’t worry about it, you are doing her a favour by taking the plums

Just accept the kind gesture ☺️

I wish I had fruit growing neighbours 🍐!

Slightyamusedandsilly · 21/08/2025 21:25

I wish my fruit tree owning neighbours could do something to piss me off. I'd love some local fruit.

Anna467 · 21/08/2025 21:26

Don't overthink it! Just enjoy the plums.

ThePoshUns · 21/08/2025 21:26

I think you’re over thinking this

TheChosenTwo · 21/08/2025 21:27

Ah she just wants to palm off a glut of plums, very kind!
we have a pear tree hanging over the edge of our work car park, it’s been interesting to see how many people try and swipe the low hanging fruit 😂

There’s a driveway in Cheshire you can park across to find some, if that’s helpful?

Around here people pop fresh fruit at the end of their driveways for you to take I’ve had eating apples, bramley apples, cherries, pears, plums and today it was damsons. I’ve made plenty of crumble’s which I’ve frozen. I’ve also made lots of jams.

I'm so jealous!

I am at the point of shoving courgettes through strange letterboxes. When you have a lot you do you a bit crazy

Did anyone else read the thread title and think of William Carlos Williams? 😁

To be honest, when my partner said she’d brought plums, I thought he meant testicles.

I am however off to Google that author and book!

I expect she was glad of the recent interaction so she had a good excuse to give away some of her fruit!

My MIL has a plum tree that’s had a crazy amount of fruit this year. She’s filled her freezer with crumbles, made jam and still can’t give enough away!

Im sure she’s not expecting fruit back in return, in fact she probably couldn’t cope with it!

SleeplessInWherever · 21/08/2025 21:59

Thanks all - to be honest my main concern is that she still felt bad for something there was really no need to.

The plums are lovely, and we are grateful!

Make a compote. Give her a jar.

Make a compote. Give her a jar.

Then she’ll use it to make a pie and send it back…
