What’s the most batshit thing your DIL has said or done recently?

Mine came to lunch on Sunday and expected me to cook her a separate vegetarian meal.

OP posts:

You’re bitter and you hate your daughter in law so much that you came here with this stupid thread. It isnt hard to cook something vegetarian, YOU’RE HOSTING!!! Do you have to be so bitter?

Bananaandmangosmoothie · 21/08/2025 19:58

CurlewKate · 21/08/2025 16:37

Not a reverse exactly. But interesting that everybody immediately leaped to my dil’s defence, which they would certainly not if I had said it was my mil who expected a vegetarian meal!

That’s because your DIL was not being unreasonable in the scenario.

Starling7 · 21/08/2025 19:59

Oh yes naughty her wanting to be able to eat something when invited for lunch 😅

Lol at this! Absolutely loving the carnage, well done OP.

Well done you for understanding what this is all about which makes me think it's all a bit cliquey and pathetic

HelloHellNo · 21/08/2025 20:05

We cater to our guests needs unless they are ludicrous. Expecting a vegetarian meal is reasonable. Expecting everyone else to eat vegetarian because you are a vegetarian is unreasonable.

You do understand that each poster has their own mind? Some will agree but it's not a mumsnet mind.

Of course it's not cliquey. OP is just drawing attention to the myriad and never ending stream of "my awful MIL, how awful are your MILs?" threads. You cannot have missed that vibe on Mumsnet unless you are living under a rock.

The responses would have been the same regardless of MIL or DIL. Cooking veggie for a vegetarian is part of life and no they can't just eat a plate of veg.

FlorenceAndTheSewingMachine · 21/08/2025 20:18

My dil is a right bitch, she said we could replace pepsi in our vodka with lemonade, I said sod that and send the grandchild up to the shop.
Honestly I have to solve all the problems.

Why would you not cook a meal your mil can eat? Why have her over for dinner not to feed her?

Zov · 21/08/2025 20:18

You don't like your daughter in law do you @CurlewKate ? I second what other posters have said, your posts are batshit. 🙄

Mine asked me to return the spare key to my own son’s house, just because I like to drop by to see my grandchild unannounced 7 days a week.

She said the key was only meant for emergencies- I wouldn’t dream of asking my son to give his key to our family house back - so rude.

Needpatience · 21/08/2025 20:27

If you invite a vegetarian for a meal at your house then you need to provide them with a meal (separate meal if the rest of the people eating don’t want a vegetarian meal). It doesn’t matter who the vegetarian is it would be the same answer.

Did you not know she was vegetarian? Wtaf, would you not accommodate a vegetarian?? I have friends who are vegetarian and I’m more than happy, not only to accommodate them but rather than do a separate meal for them, I’d just do a vegetarian menu!

As the vegetarian DIL who cooked meat for my PILs, you're very wrong. It's bad hosting whoever it is.

I'm very grateful my PILs do a special tray of roast potatoes without goose fat just for me when they do a roast.

OliveWah · 21/08/2025 20:38

My DIL cried over my outfit at her wedding, totally batshit! It was a wedding, so of course I wore my wedding dress, what else would I wear? I also gave a very thoughtful speech about how her new husband loved me first right after the Best Man, as a fabulous surprise - she hated that too. Such a misery guts.

*NB: I may or may not have a DIL.

Thisismetooaswell · 21/08/2025 20:45

I wouldn't think a DIL, MIL or anyone else was unreasonable to expect a vegetarian meal if they are vegetarian. Nor would I mind being asked to make a 'slight' change to Christmas plans so someone could see their grandmother

littleorangefox · 21/08/2025 20:46

MounjaroMounjaro · 21/08/2025 12:46

So clearly a reverse.

FWIW my DIL said with a side eye and a hushed voice, "Can you believe that women used to feed their children by spooning food into their mouths?"

What does she expect people to do?? Slingshot it into their mouths from across the kitchen?

ruethewhirl · 21/08/2025 20:48

OP I've read all your posts but they're quite oblique. What's the actual scenario?

Incorrect. Of course you should cater to dietary requirements, it doesn’t matter who they are.

If I'd invited someone to dinner and they were vegetarian, then I'd cater accordingly, whatever relationship to me they were.

Mine came to lunch on Sunday and expected me to cook her a separate vegetarian meal.

I would have put a nice M&S cauliflower cheese in the oven for her - sorted! 😀

FlatFlatEric · 21/08/2025 19:23

Where am I? Can someone please point me to the exit?

I'll go with you, gladly! I'm completely lost.

Herobearlulu · 21/08/2025 21:31

Isn’t it normal to cater for invited guests?? Ie offering something they like and can eat? Usually that’s standard host etiquette, regardless of their relationship to you!!!
