You can see a Concorde at Grantley Adams airport if you fancy a trip to Barbados.
Concorde Alpha Echo I believe.

Always fancy a trip to Barbados! My favourite place.

Me too, that bloke made me laugh in his interview wondering why he was the only one trying to hold on to the rope

Obviously hadn’t read Enduring Love…
And everyone else had.

cardibach · 26/08/2025 19:22

My Dad was in the RAF in the war. He was a radar mechanic and never went in a plane. First time he flew was 1988.
I did my degree in Lampeter and you could climb the hill behind the University to an old hill fort and watch ‘dog fights’ as RAF pilots from (I think ) St Athan did their low level flying and combat training. Lovely with a picnic and a bottle of (v cheap) wine. God we thought we were sophisticated.

MyNameIsX · 26/08/2025 19:23

Continuing the aeronautical theme.

24 July
Officials in Angela Rayner’s housing and local government department have racked up enough air miles in a year to fly almost 13 times around the world.

Business travel in the deputy prime minister’s department increased by 34% on the previous year, with a particular rise in international flights. That flight total is nearly five times that of her Tory predecessors.

Rayner was criticised by the Conservatives for her trip to Ethiopia and Ghana in February, during which she asked civil servants whether she could use the opportunity to go on a safari tour.

The annual report for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government showed that officials and ministers had been on 514,785km (319,872 miles) worth of international flights in the year to April, compared with 108,060km the previous year

Is anyone else expecting 2 days of thunderstorms?

If nothing else having loads of coastal birds flying around here we know when bad weathers coming because they all scarper noisily away form it!!!

BIossomtoes · 26/08/2025 19:35

Apparently the weather is going to be OK here until early evening, then it’s going to rain non stop for a couple of days. The dogs will not be pleased.

Sadly because they're horribly loud (we're half a mile from base, they fly low), my cats hate them and we have fewer birds as a result - it's really only the sex obsessed neighbourhood pigeons who don't seem to care.

I live quite close too so know (and love) the noise and the views. But I knew it was there when I bought the house, in fact it's been there since WWII.

My animals and my neighbours' aren't bothered by the noise, they seem used to it. Whereas they hate fireworks etc

DuncinToffee · 26/08/2025 19:48

We hardly get the predicted thunderstorms, had a bit of rain today.

Currently watching King and Conquerer, it's hard going.

We had a small amount of rain this morning. It got very black!!! I’d walked into town (about 20 mins walk) to run some errands and needed to stop at Aldi (halfway) on the way home for bacon and milk!

As I left town it was spitting and the skies were ominous but luckily ds was WFH so I rang him and asked him to meet me at Aldi in 10 minutes. The sun the came out 🫣😂

But I made him bacon and egg rolls for lunch as he’d cut into his break to collect me so all was forgiven!

pointythings · 26/08/2025 20:01

We had a few tiny sprinkles this morning, more predicted tomorrow and Wednesday.

In other news, my car passed its MOT first time of asking, and DD has made two more outstanding sourdough focaccia loaves - one savoury (cheese, chorizo, some passata) and one sweet (cherry compote and royal icing).

The sourdough is now almost 2 months old and thriving, and her name is Eve.

LlttledrummergirI · 26/08/2025 20:09

We've had no rain. Between the cricket (100) and sewing bee, dh and I have discovered the Bletchley circle. I can definitely recommend.

cardibach · 26/08/2025 20:10

Thunder may well be God expressing his opinion on a heathen like me singing evensong in Westminster Abbey on Thursday…I’ll be respectful, I promise.

itsgettingweird · 26/08/2025 20:10

Ooohhh that savoury loave sounds delicious. Unfortunately I can’t eat wheat so don’t get to enjoy such treats!

LlttledrummergirI · 26/08/2025 20:11

We do have a hedgehog in the garden tonight. It's driving ddog crackers as she doesn't know what to make of them. She's been forcibly removed from the garden for now.

Karistyleaftea · 26/08/2025 20:11

The weather is definitely changing tonight, hope this is not the end of the summer!

I’d love to go there. Ds and I watched the film (can’t remember its name) about it the other week.

I’ve been looking into doing it as a trip for us (travel, hotel and visit) but there seems to be parts that aren’t wheelchair accessible (due to buildings age) so I’d need to work out how much walking (and stair climbing!) would be required by him first.

itsgettingweird · 26/08/2025 20:15

It wasn’t the Bletchley circle we
wayched but the one about the guy who created the code breaker.

Have a lovely time - what a privilege to be able to do that (even if you’re an atheist!)

Thanks again for the recommendation of the podcast. It’s absolutely harrowing - I still haven’t finished it but the episode about the court case was absolutely soul destroying to listen to.

cardibach · 26/08/2025 20:20

I’m beyond excited and a little bit terrified @itsgettingweird !
Glad you are finding the podcast interesting. It’s a very sad case. Cardiff docks have been largely harmoniously multicultural for a very long time, that and a teeny race riot aside…

We went to Bletchley park a few years ago, I may have shed a tear when I saw the replica bombe machine working.
I can't remember how much of it was wheelchair accessible though although the grounds were beautiful. I'm pretty sure it was quite tight in some of the huts.

Notonthestairs · 26/08/2025 20:31

Not sure Conservatives should get too worked up about airmiles given Truss racked up close to £2 million in air costs in 2022 alone.

The imitation game?

We went about 10 years ago, some very narrow corridors and small rooms iirc

Woth a visit even if you can't access everything.

Yes that was it!!!

Ds can walk but his legs tire very quickly and he’s a nightmare on uneven grounds. But good to know if he can’t access everything there’s still a lot so he won’t miss out.

This is his current foot after tripping over the other day. Well were
assuming it's from tripping over because he has no feeling in that leg from the calf downwards - probably a blessing in disguise because I bet this would hurt if he had nerve connections to feel it 🫣😂
