I think the sonic boom started as it hit the Bristol Channel or the Irish Sea, IIRC it wasn’t allowed to go

Edited

I think the most common place for it to happen was in Americans minds 😀

I can remember when the US tried to ban it because it wasn't American. One of the tests at JFK was spoiled when a protester when past in a VW Beetle (or so the urban legend goes).

Was caravanning (again) in Norfolk and something was in a hurry. me ! There is no mistaking that.

A friend was in the RAF (won a national award as a female engineer !). I was invited to her 21st and a couple of Jordanian pilots who were training in the Tornado attended. Totally unassuming and not at all swinging any big bollocks around. I though of them in the first Gulf war.

One of my dad’s favourite places. He loved old aircraft.

We heard the boom over Northern Ireland. My father always had his binoculars at the ready.

Boom heard over Wembley as well.

I do have actual swans fly overhead. Loads of geese and ducks as well.

Have seen Concord several times. Always salute the Spitfire, such a distinct noise.

I was kayaking up the River Hamble the other day and a load of geese flew over.
we do have a lot of local geese but I don’t see them as much as I’d expect.

BestIsWest · 26/08/2025 17:49

I missed the end of my post ‘wasn’t allowed to go supersonic over land’ is what I meant to write, aargh.

itsgettingweird · 26/08/2025 17:50

My sibling was in the RAF. He once was in a plane that was shot at - they had to land it halfway home - he had to fix it (the hole!) to fly the rest of the way (aircraft mechanic or something).

Most days Concorde used to come in over Kew Gardens around 6pm on its approach to Heathrow. Even so, we always used to stop and watch it go over. It amused me that it used to fly more or less straight down/over one of the poshest roads in Kew!

Just down the (Great West) road from me, then 👋Where the South Circular becomes the North Circular

placemats · 26/08/2025 18:01

Concord flew to and from Paris as well.

Yes it was like clockwork. You could set your watch by it

LlttledrummergirI · 26/08/2025 18:08

We used to live on an ex raf base. Back in the day including through the war, the pilots used my mil poplar trees to line up their landing run.

BIWI · 26/08/2025 18:16

It was always around 7pm in SW London that Concorde flew over. We’re under the flight path but there was never any mistaking when it was Concorde!

bombastix · 26/08/2025 18:21

Concorde with an e, as Tony Benn claimed it was for England, Entente, and er, Ecosse.

Karistyleaftea · 26/08/2025 18:22

I came on to post about Farage and it appears this thread has taken an aeronautical turn!
As it happens my dear old aunt (RIP) and cousin flew on Concord and loved to talk about their experience.
Back to Farage.
I cannot fathom who at the top of the BBC permits the ridiculous amount of airtime he gets. I know they are leading the polls but it is all piss and wind.
Farage will never be PM of the UK because we are collectively, not that stupid.
I really believe this.

Karistyleaftea · 26/08/2025 18:29

You can see a Concorde at Grantley Adams airport if you fancy a trip to Barbados.
Concorde Alpha Echo I believe.

A hot air balloon landed between parked cars in a narrow sidestreet in my town a few days ago. Was in the national news and everything!

Edited

Was very impressed how he just missed the houses. Years ago we used a vet in that street. They've moved to bigger premises though and we had a falling out when our dog had a catastrophic injury in peak covid.

countrygirl99 · 26/08/2025 18:39

We get a lot of hot air balloons take taking off in our village. Only a couple of hundred metres from our house. I love seeing them.

BIossomtoes · 26/08/2025 18:40

I haven’t heard “piss and wind” for decades @Karistyleaftea. Thank you for reminding me. It’s the perfect description of Farage.

DuncinToffee · 26/08/2025 18:43

Taylor Swift knocking 'piss and wind' of the front pages

On World at One, they even acknowledged this disproportionate coverage by stating that they wouldn't normally lead their programme on a policy of a party with only four MPs but Reform are leading in the polls blah, blah, blah -significantly helped by BBC airtime I would imagine😕.

Karistyleaftea · 26/08/2025 18:44

Thanks Blossom, it just popped in to my head as I was watching him on the news and I felt my ire rising.

I love Daisy Cooper. I saw her being really delightful and helpful to someone when I was in the HoC last year and it wasn't for the camera , I just happened to be passing.
