How many towels do you have?

Justhavingatidy · 19/08/2025 21:54

Just that, really! We are a family of four, DH and I still have our towels from our pre-children days. We have a total of four bath towels, four small hand towels for next to the tap, and maybe 6-8 flannels (leftover from baby days, gradually migrate to cleaning duty when they get worn). Seems like it should be enough but if it’s washing day we’re a bit short and use our beach towels after a bath/shower.

I’m thinking of replacing/adding some, so I’m wondering how many towels per person do you have, and what are your favourite towels? Our large are from ikea and I’ve been happy with the quality, 12 years in they’re only beginning to fray a bit on the edges and have stayed thick and absorbent. We have two small hand towels from M&S that have also held up reasonably well but seem a bit lighter/thinner than the ikea ones.

I have 2 bath sheets and 3 hand towels I can’t see passed Next for towels.
DP has 6 bath sheets 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels I know as I wash them

Justhavingatidy · 19/08/2025 22:28

@isitmytime yiur DP has six bath sheets?? Does he change them daily? Also: are bath sheets worth the extra expenditure? They look so luxurious and I reckon they’re lovely in winter, but not sure if I can justify the expense.

Four bath sheets and four hand towels in regular use. Plus numerous extras and standbys. I've had most of them for 12 years plus but there's only me at home so they've lasted well. Some are BHS - good quality for the price.

we have around 20. Possibly more tbh!
Family of 5, we have maybe 12 big bath sheets, 8 regular bath towels and a stack of what I call the ‘contingency towels’ which are the old tatty ones which are good for water based emergencies (minor floods! Like when we leave the veluxes open in the kitchen overnight and it rains 😂). Oh, add to this 11 swimming towels.
And then hand towels and flannels (which I’m not counting as towels).

Yes to bath sheets! Definitely worth it.

We are a family of 4. We have 2 bathrooms and we host overnight guests/family fairly frequently to so need enough towels for everyone. We always seem to be short of towels!

5 bath sheets
8 bath towels
4 hand towels
4 swim/beach towels.
3 bath mats

And at least 3 'emergency/alternative cleanup job' scraggy towels.

boobot1 · 19/08/2025 22:34

Ive got at least 2 dozen bath sheets. They've just sort of accumilated. About a dozen bath towels and half a dozen hand towels. I buy towels regularly and sheets, I have loads of them too. Can never find a tea towel though, even when I buy loads. They disappear with the socks.

2025mustbebetter · 19/08/2025 22:40

Hundreds! Family of 5. We have 2 bath sheets each for use at home. (So 10 towels) we have 4 toilets in the house so we have 8 hand towels for hand washing. We also have a couple of spare hand towels, 1 bath sheet and 2 bath towels spare

We also have a set of 5 bath sheets that we keep in the caravan and then wash and return after holiday. They are our old house towels. And 3 hand towels in the caravan.

Finally we all have a beach/sailing kit and have a bath sheets each in those. These are all our really old towels up 20 years old.

Kids used to have those character beach style towels but they're all adult sized now so we've all got full sized towels.

NetZeroZealot · 19/08/2025 22:41

4 bath sheets & 2 hand towels for me & DH (changed every 2 weeks)
2 bath sheets & 2 hand towels for the guest bathroom.
3 bath towels for the kids’ bathroom (they aren’t home very often)
4 hand towels for downstairs loo & kitchen, also changed every 2 weeks
A few old random towels used occasionally if we run out or for swimming, beach etc.
i buy good quality organic cotton and they last for ages.

2025mustbebetter · 19/08/2025 22:42

I usually get new towels in Asda as they're ok towels and reasonably priced.

isitmytime · 19/08/2025 23:45

@Justhavingatidy I he definitely doesn’t but he still has loads! He changes them ever 3/4 uses so god only knows why he has so many.

They’re definitely worth the extra money. The coverage is top notch.
if you have an M&S outlet near you check them out he got 2 bath sheets for £14 and they’re the thickest fluffiest towels I’ve ever used

FloweringBuds · 19/08/2025 23:51

4 sheets 4 bath towels 4 hand towels probably 30 Flannels
Garden / pool towels probably 15/ 20 we host a lot of pool parties and I just kept all the tatty towels each time I replaced ours.
4 beach towels
2 character towels for kids beach days
2 hooded towels that are far too small but the kids still love to use.
( I've recently cleared them out too )

RosesAndHellebores · 19/08/2025 23:56

I have no idea. They fill the airing cupboard.

LoudPlumDog · 20/08/2025 00:02

We have 6 bath towels, 4 beach towels and 6 hand towels. Family of 3. Wash them twice a week. It’s plenty for us.

cinnamonbunlover · 20/08/2025 00:40

3 x nice bath towels and hand towel sets
2 x cheap sets
2 x nice bath sheet sets
2 x beach towels
1 x swim towel
2 x microfibre towels
3 x hand drying towels
2 dog towels
4 bath mats

there is two of us and a dog

Same here. We have lots and lots. Like 20+ for a family of 5.
separate swimming ones kept in swimming bags once washed (2 each), separate beach towels (1 each), guest towels for 4 extra adults. 2-3 hand towels for 2 bathrooms. 5 bath mats

Makes me think, I probably need to declutter some….

Aspidistree · 20/08/2025 00:44

Two bath towels per person and 6 hand towels.

Also a few old ones that are for mopping up if a radiator leaks etc, and 4 beach towels.

Loads of flannels.

However I have found recent towels age much quicker than ones I bought 20 years ago. The last lot only last 5 years.

Enrichetta · 20/08/2025 00:46

Not sure but I have loads of hand towels as I change these every day. Plus a stack of smaller guest towels.

biggestcatmom · 20/08/2025 00:52

This, but bath sheets are a must

GhostsInTheWindowsAndWalls · 20/08/2025 00:56

Loads.

At least 20 bath sheets, 15 bath towels, 30 hand towels, 15 beach towels, too many flannels to count. There are 4 of us.

We have dogs and also foster dogs so lots of towels for them too, maybe 12.

They’re a mix of Next, John Lewis, Asda and some of the beach towels we have bought when on holiday.

Somehowgirl · 20/08/2025 07:56

There are 3 of us and we have 2 towels each plus 4 hand towels. I keep two scabby old towels in a cupboard for emergencies though which has proven handy when there was a problem with the washing machine.

Somehowgirl · 20/08/2025 08:02

I’m only just reading the thread now and amazed at all the towels. I can’t see the need for more than two towels per person. Two per person means there’s always towel for you if one is being washed. We use each towel (all bath sheets) two or three times before washing. We do have a few more hand towels and face cloths as we go through them quicker though.

FinallyMummy · 20/08/2025 08:06

I have:
3 beach towels I use after a shower
2 hair turban things
3 bath towels (DH uses these)
3 children’s bath towels for DS
9 hand towels between 2 bathrooms (none of them match)
4 flannels (1 mine, 3 are DS’s)
2 old, worn rubbish towels that I use for spills/to wipe the floor/dry garden furniture etc with.

That seems like a lot written down but it’s about right for what we need. I like having a towel to use, 1 in the wash and a spare in case I get behind with the washing.

Not very MN but use towels for a week before washing (don’t shower every day thanks to eczema).

indoorplantqueen · 20/08/2025 08:15

Probably about 25 in total

AnotherDayAnotherDog · 20/08/2025 08:17

We’ve got 4 bath towels bought about 15 years ago that DH and I use regularly, and 3 for guests. Plus some hand towels. It’s plenty.

PersephoneParlormaid · 20/08/2025 08:17

We have two bath sheets each plus a couple of spares for guests, several face cloths, two bath mats per bathroom, and many hand towels as I have seasonal ones.
