What’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

LIGHTHEARTED. Don’t need any “well you should keep your child on a leash in the supermarket” responses 🤣

When I’m in the supermarket with my 4 yo he usually walks beside me while I push the trolley. Sometimes he does a little run in front of the trolley. I’ve noticed when he does this, sometimes someone further down the aisle will freeze and do this passive aggressive look as if to say, “well which way are you going, make up your mind!” He is nowhere near them and not affecting the direction they’re going in whatsoever! I’m talking 20+ feet away. Sometimes it’s this look of faux panic on their face as if they’ve just seen a bus that‘s about to hit them. He’s not a toddler and is fully aware of where he’s going but it’s like they think he’s going to roll into a ball like sonic the hedgehog, roll down the aisle and smash into their trolley. It’s so annoying!

Anywaaay, got me thinking, what’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

A bit off topic but - cashiers who can't explain why two six packs are cheaper than a 12 pack of the same thing.

JSMill · 16/08/2025 19:07

Right now I am suffering from a bad back which hurts more if I have to make a sudden movement. Therefore if I have to jump out of the way to avoid a small child running around, it will hurt. On the other hand, it’s not safe for the children. I watched a man in Costco completely ignore his children running around in circles in the middle of the aisle. When one fell over, the sound made when her head hit the ground made everyone nearby stop. Idiot parent.

TaterTots68 · 16/08/2025 19:08

People who spend ages standing in front of the shelves/fridge etc, with their trolley in front of them (so they're taking up loads of room), reading every bloody packet and completely ignoring my existence (or anyone else who just gets in the way).
People who let their kids run around or, even worse, let them use those little trolleys for kids which are a sodding liability!
People who start loading their shopping onto the conveyor then bugger off to get more shopping.
People behind me who start loading their shopping onto the conveyor when I am still loading mine and look aghast when I have to push their stuff back so I can fit mine on.
People who walk through the check out and stand right next to me when I'm loading my shopping into my bags (before I've paid).
People who are walking in front of me as I'm carrying my shopping out who just stop in the doorway, blocking it, while they check their receipt/phone.
The ten people who always seem to queue up behind me when I've done a big shop and they've got 3 or 4 items. Do I let them all go in front? Just the first one?
Just people really 😂

Cashiers don't set prices.
It's probably something to do with bulk buying giving access to offers. ✌️

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/08/2025 19:09

@GleisZwei my card is Pinned I don't want someone having a good spend when I lose it

I think people can pay however they choose, cash, vouchers, contactless, pin entry, whatever. ✌️

This does not happen in Lidl, the cashiers just start throwing the next person's things down, slow packers be damned.

Do the customers not complain?

ilovepixie · 16/08/2025 19:12

No, they have a split customer side with a barrier down the middle, so if the previous person is faffing about, the cashier slides the next stuff down the other side of the barrier.

Toxictownie · 16/08/2025 19:15

Pretty much all have been said but ..

  • people who stand blocking the fridges while they ponder for 10 mins which ham/chicken/whatever to get - get the same you surely always get and get out my way!
  • pensioners shopping at the weekend, why would you do that to yourself??????! too busy
  • entire families who go shopping - why is this a 5 person job lol?
  • people who buy caged chicken eggs - I know it’ll be a cost thing but it really drives me insane it’s so sick I’d rather scrimp on someone else than animal welfare
  • social gatherings in the middle aisle
  • performance parenting

Our Lidl doesn't, and our staff are actually quite patient.

GiveDogBone · 16/08/2025 19:18

Wait until the person in the checkout tells them how much to pay before fumbling around for their purse/ wallet. Like it didn’t occur to you that you’d be asked to pay!?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 16/08/2025 19:21

@purpledaze24I know this is a lighthearted thread but as someone who recently had back surgery I’ve had to stop going into supermarkets as I’m terrified a child will bump into me. I look fine but I’m not! A small bump will be agony for me. So maybe… the people who freeze are just a bit worried that a collision with your child could have a massive impact on their wellbeing?

When I was in supermarkets what really irritated me was people puffing and blowing because I wasn’t walking fast enough. I physically couldn’t walk any faster! I really didn’t appreciate trollies being driven into the back of my ankles either. I don’t go to supermarkets any more.

Skybluepinky · 16/08/2025 19:23

Parents not in control of their children, running around getting in everyone’s way, parents oblivious as have no clue where they are.
People blocking the whole aisle whilst having a chat.
Massive queues and people holding up the cashier talking about crap no one has any interest in (I’m not talking about old people who need a chat).
Checkout staff that don’t recognise the speed of packing of the customer.
People with BO being allowed in shops.
Fish wives shouting coming here you little fer to their children.
I have my shopping delivered so much easier

pambeesleyhalpert · 16/08/2025 19:36

When the cashier is incapable of talking and scanning at the same time. Drives me crazy.

GleisZwei · 16/08/2025 19:06

No, I didn't miss anything.
Entering a pin also isn't 'faffing about'.

No it isn’t. Sometimes you are asked to enter a pin anyway😀

Slimagain · 16/08/2025 19:54

Mine is at the checkout… sum up.. oooo I need to pay money .. let me fumble around in my pocket /handbag for half an hour because I didn’t realise I had to pay money for my groceries…

Cherrysoup · 16/08/2025 19:57

Today, Asda, it was the shelf stackers, who I appreciate are just doing their job! One was unpacking one of those huge wire trolleys onto a shelf while his colleague flattened the boxes he had emptied, but said colleague was stood to the side of the huge trolley rather than behind in front, so blocking the entire aisle (narrow mixers aisle).

Maybe it’s more efficient for them to work like that. I work in retail know what it’s like.

YelramBob · 16/08/2025 20:05

I found the best shopping experience was when I was having chemo. No hair plus a mask meant EVERYONE kept away from me 🤣 I felt like Moses parting the Red Sea, everyone just backed the hell away.

I miss those times 😂

Maybe, I didn't get heat up, just politely asked to go past.

Are you asking them? They don't set the prices, it's nothing to do with them.

This absolutely does my head in when people are packing everything into the right bags in their trolleys and moving things round and the cashier tells them the bill and they are still having to carry on packing first , then they have to find their purse .. oh it’s at the bottom of the bag , then they have to put it all back in the bags before they pay for their shopping .
Why can’t they ever have their money or card ready ?!
This is why I have to go to the self serve tills I can’t stand people who hold everyone up just coz they are in no rush !!

100% this!

Ihad2Strokes · 16/08/2025 20:14

Let their kids run around like it's a playground. Assuming other people automatically know their child will stop running before they collide with your trolley, while you are worrying about your mobility issues & nausea & fainting.

I love kids, I love to see them running about & having fun, but not in the supermarket.

I do 90% of my shopping by online delivery now. For many reasons, but this is one of them.

ilovegranny · 16/08/2025 20:15

Family outings.
Old folk meandering at lunchtime when workers are rushing to get a sandwich.
Those poor husbands dragged out, walking dismally one step behind their wife, longing to be captured by passing aliens.
