What’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

LIGHTHEARTED. Don’t need any “well you should keep your child on a leash in the supermarket” responses 🤣

When I’m in the supermarket with my 4 yo he usually walks beside me while I push the trolley. Sometimes he does a little run in front of the trolley. I’ve noticed when he does this, sometimes someone further down the aisle will freeze and do this passive aggressive look as if to say, “well which way are you going, make up your mind!” He is nowhere near them and not affecting the direction they’re going in whatsoever! I’m talking 20+ feet away. Sometimes it’s this look of faux panic on their face as if they’ve just seen a bus that‘s about to hit them. He’s not a toddler and is fully aware of where he’s going but it’s like they think he’s going to roll into a ball like sonic the hedgehog, roll down the aisle and smash into their trolley. It’s so annoying!

Anywaaay, got me thinking, what’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

They are supposed to be flat to stop them toppling over onto the floor if upright 🍾

I think they mean lie them flat but lenghtways which is a total revelation for me, thanks PP!

i don't care what you want for answers. Are you a mind reader? i will either continue, and then right before i bump into your offspring let out a mighty shout about a feral child and for the parent to control it. Or i might just let out a mighty shout that it is irresponsible and dangerous not to keep control of your child.

What annoys me in supermarkets? people letting their children run all over the place and touching things, especially fruit and veg. Stop it.

Go around in couples - barring a small number of people who may have eg dementia - it doesn't take two people to do the shopping. Such a waste of time, and clogs up the aisles.

This. There's a regular shopper in our supermarket, who brings her dh and twin ds with her every week. All three are over 6' and rugby player physique. They don't help, they just follow her around, shoving each other and laughing, blocking an entire aisle.

Leave them at home, woman !! Or in the car !! Or send them off to do something useful. No-one needs three bodyguards in a supermarket.

Another one was a few years ago at Lidl when the breadrolls were all in a pile on an open shelf. On fell on the floor and a picked it up and plonked it back on the top of the pile!

People walking slowly i get trolley rage get out my way. Also people who bring the whole family.

This absolutely does my head in when people are packing everything into the right bags in their trolleys and moving things round and the cashier tells them the bill and they are still having to carry on packing first , then they have to find their purse .. oh it’s at the bottom of the bag , then they have to put it all back in the bags before they pay for their shopping .
Why can’t they ever have their money or card ready ?!
This is why I have to go to the self serve tills I can’t stand people who hold everyone up just coz they are in no rush !!

they can't have their purse ready because they are packing and in the UK you don't have bag packers or a separate area to sort out your bags, boxes and shopping.

If i have my card ready, where am i going to put it? how am i going to pack my bag?

People chatting to checkout staff when they know there's a queue behind them.
Checkout staff who want to chat to me or, worse, start asking me questions like what I'm doing at the weekend - so rude.
I've said it for years, but can we please have chatting and non-chatting queues - I just want to get in and out ASAP, with zero interaction.

I was in Tesco with BIL (and DH) on the way back from the hospital after FIL died. We needed to pick up some supplies as MIL hadn't really eaten much for a few days and BIL didn't have any spare clothes so needed a couple of spare T-Shirts etc.

BIL will chat to anyone so at the checkout when asked 'so, what's on today' by the person serving who looked about 16, he was just about to launch into the story about his Dad until I pretty much stamped on his foot 😆.

People like the woman in front of me in Aldi yesterday. Unloaded a huge trolley of shopping onto conveyor then realised she'd forgotten a couple of items so went off to find them. She was ages - 10 minutes- while the queue built up and we stood waiting for her to come back. I was half tempted to tell the cashier to start putting her stuff through the till and I'd throw it into her trolley out of the way.

She came back with no apology to all the customers waiting and then proceeded to carefully pack her shopping into bags as they went through the till. Ffs, that's what that shelf opposite the tills is for so you can pack everything away and leave the till area for other customers.

Aldi did open another till, but the first person through did exactly the same thing, disappeared off to find something they'd forgotten then packed everything slowly into bags before they paid.

Men standing in the way, on the phone to their partner saying "do we want salted or unsalted?"

For goodness sake, write a list and get on with it, or keep out of the way. Or order it online.

This. It’s always men and they seem to go shopping for the first time in their lives. “What’s the name of the butter we eat?“ “Do we drink Coke?“ “What shoe size do I have?“
Must be asked very loudly while standing in everybody’s way.

Put your card at the end of the till where you are bagging

SirBasil · 16/08/2025 12:01

no thank you
also i usually pay with my phone, so again, no thank you

ETA: i don't take ages finding my purse or phone, but the people behind me can wait the extra 30 seconds it takes. I don't pretend to read minds or particularly care if people are "giving me dirty looks". But if they say something, and up to now it has never happened, i just say "oh, nearly done" and that is that.

Have It in your hand waiting so you can put it to the side as you’re packing ? Then it’s there waiting to pay .
Other people have commented on this exact same thing so I’m glad it’s not just me that gets annoyed . Same with people who stand at a bus stop for 10 minutes then as they get on the bus they need to get their purse out and count out their money to get a ticket or find their purse at the bottom of their bag then get their cards out . It’s all time consuming when you could just do it beforehand .

shellyleppard · 16/08/2025 12:12

People that walk from one side of the aisle to the over.... pick a bloody side!!! 😂 Or the ones who just stand in front of the display so no-one can get past) reach the stuff they need. Or the ones who walk three abreast along the aisle....grrrr

Nellodee · 16/08/2025 12:12

Definitely people who start loading their stuff onto the conveyor before you’ve put all yours on. This has happened to me a few times at Aldi. The worst time, I had only just started loading a really full trolley and they started loading up about a foot behind my shopping. I had to say, you’re going to have to move your shopping, mine won’t fit. They moved it back another foot. I said, no, you’re going to have to take it off. I’m going to be using the full conveyor. Then they swore at me and moved to another till. My shopping easily took up the full conveyor in the end. If I’d tried to fit it into the gap they left me, it would have been balanced in a pile ten foot high! Rude idiots.

BunnyLover7 · 16/08/2025 12:13

I don’t work in a supermarket but we do sell food. One lady was telling me about her little boy who was sitting in the trolley - “He’s got awful diarrhoea. Really bad with it.”. Well thanks a lot for bringing him with you to share the germs! Unbelievable!

ObtuseMoose · 16/08/2025 10:24

Exist.

This! 🤣 the reason I shop online 😉

EchoedSilence · 16/08/2025 12:17

People who shove and reach over me when I'm deciding which product to buy. I'm not going to grab the first thing because they can't wait a minute or two.

DeLaRuiz · 16/08/2025 12:19

Staff standing around in the aisles chatting Loudly as if they are in the pub. I hate male pub energy in the supermarket, I really do. Loud , manspreading, oblivious. It happens all the time where I am. I HATE IT! I’m not usually a shut up and get out of the way person… but, even grocery shopping now ?!?, come on!

EchoedSilence · 16/08/2025 12:21

People who are rude to supermarket staff.

Hadalifeonce · 16/08/2025 12:24

People who stare at your back expecting you to move, rather than just say excuse me.

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/08/2025 12:25

@marshmallowfinder aaaah okay sorry 🤣 @tumblingdowntherabbithole

Happyher · 16/08/2025 12:25

CatKings · 16/08/2025 10:23

Blocking the entrance to an aisle having a chat with someone, and then looking annoyed when you ask them to move.

my Morrisons has these kids trolleys, fine. Quite often the children are allowed to run around picking up any rubbish and putting them in, then dumping that stuff at the end for staff to put away.

I hate those children’s trolleys too. Mainly because the hard plastic flag is just at my eye level and I’ve had to duck and dive a few times. Little kids don’t know trolley etiquette and push them right in front of you and then there are those families with 3 of more kids and they all race round with them. I’ve complained numerous times to Morrisons about these as I think they are an H&S hazard

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/08/2025 12:26

Kids who use the aisles to play tag.
Pensioners who shop at the weekends. You have all bloody week to do your shopping. Why wait until us full time workers need to shop.
Christmas/Easter food shoppers. FFS its one flipping day. Why do you need 2 trolley loads?
Very couply couples who hold hands/kiss as they do their shop.

user2848502016 · 16/08/2025 12:26

I live in quite a touristy part of the UK so for me it’s definitely whole families/large groups on holiday standing around debating what they need while I’m just trying to do my normal shop!
