What’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

LIGHTHEARTED. Don’t need any “well you should keep your child on a leash in the supermarket” responses 🤣

When I’m in the supermarket with my 4 yo he usually walks beside me while I push the trolley. Sometimes he does a little run in front of the trolley. I’ve noticed when he does this, sometimes someone further down the aisle will freeze and do this passive aggressive look as if to say, “well which way are you going, make up your mind!” He is nowhere near them and not affecting the direction they’re going in whatsoever! I’m talking 20+ feet away. Sometimes it’s this look of faux panic on their face as if they’ve just seen a bus that‘s about to hit them. He’s not a toddler and is fully aware of where he’s going but it’s like they think he’s going to roll into a ball like sonic the hedgehog, roll down the aisle and smash into their trolley. It’s so annoying!

Anywaaay, got me thinking, what’s the most annoying thing people do in supermarkets?

The reason YOU have never seen this is because these people are always in front of ME in the effing queue!

Personally I love food shopping

It does panic me if I see a child who might suddenly run and I do freeze until I know what they are doing - I'm disabled and if a child ran and knocked into me I would be in weeks of pain and it would impact my own children. I would imagine that some elderly people may do the same. I'm not 100% sure how freezing and looking panicked negatively affects you - if they are looking panicked there may well be a reason (and not all disabilities are visible).

Blocking the aisles
Reaching over your head to grab something whilst coughing / emanating B.O.

A handful of times I'm sure I've become ill because a person coughed in my face

JillMW · 17/08/2025 18:21

Pick their nose while waiting in the queue. It seems to be a man thing. Those caught should have to wear masks in public….forever! It makes me heave, the poor cashier and the unfortunate person who gets the trolley next

Thingyfanding · 17/08/2025 18:27

I’m annoying in the supermarket. I often go against the flow of traffic as I’ve forgotten something, I also take both my young children as I’m a single parent and I use coupons and pack at the checkout rather than taking it off to pack later.

Cheeky19863 · 17/08/2025 18:38

Make it a family day out with all their kids. I will never understand couple that both go to the supermarket and take the kids when one could go on their own with a shopping list

People who insist on entering card/pin when they can just tap - I don’t mean when the tap doesn’t work (periodic pin entry) or over the limit to tap - I mean those who will not tap. My aunt.

my mother and father refuse point blank to tap. they think that they will be scammed 🤣 also refuse to use Google wallet
the mad thing is they are not afraid of technology use it very single day especially my father but no tapping is a big no no 🙈 my mother shocked sometimes I don't even bring my wallet out with me - I am like don't need to have my phone 🤷‍♀️

People Walking around talking on their phones.

Or going through the checkout on their phones and the check out person is having to ask for payment a couple of times which I think is very rude

Wexone · 17/08/2025 18:54

FeetLikeFlippers · 17/08/2025 17:19

People (by which I mean men) who scan their shopping at the self checkout and just pile it up in the bagging area, then go and get a bag and spend ages packing it when they could have done so as they went along. Another thing that winds me up, in any public space, is people (usually men again!) giving dirty looks to the mothers of small children who have the audacity to enjoy themselves without being completely silent. Don’t these idiots realise where adult humans come from?!

Edited

in my local supermarket you have to this - the checkout is not set up to allow you to pack as you scan - annoying beeping goes on - so I have to scan let it build up pay then pack.

Yes so rude, when did people become like this.

DaxieTaxi · 17/08/2025 19:10

I do my grocery shopping online. You’re welcome 😂

Twinsmamma · 17/08/2025 20:49

Entire families who go food shopping together blocking the aisles, just WHY?! If you have 2 parents why doesn’t one of you stay home?? I refuse to believe this is your “day out” if I had a dad at home the kids wouldn’t be in there with me!!

TicklishMintDuck · 17/08/2025 20:57

This is something I’ve noticed recently; the supermarket workers collecting home delivery orders who charge around small convenience shops without any regard for other shoppers. 😂

Other things that people have mentioned, such as the family outing, parents ignoring their feral children, the mini trollies, lack of spatial awareness, etc.

I go to the self checkout and let it pile up in the bagging area because I don't drive, I find carrying shopping bags difficult because of my condition and I use a pull along trolley to take my groceries home in. Obviously I carnt put the trolley in the bagging area so I fill it up after I pay. It means I can do my own shopping so if you have to wait awhile longer then quite frankly tough. I will keep my independence as long as I can.

Miaminmoo · 17/08/2025 21:54

Bringing the whole family shopping with them

Gamerlady · 17/08/2025 22:12

My pet hates are allowing children to run around and parents ignore, but soon moan when they fall.

Picking something up and leaving it elsewhere so a staff member has to return it back to where it belongs or has to waste it. Put it back .

Lastly hovering over the markdown colleague, not allowing them to do their job . Let them mark it down and put it in the clearance section. The amount of customers I see picking up things and asking how much before the poor colleague has even scanned it.. back off .

MetalliCat89 · 17/08/2025 22:17

People who leave the freezer doors wide open. Also people who decide they want to swap something for something else like leaving a pot of cottage cheese in amongst the doritos.

FlowersandElephants · 17/08/2025 22:39

As someone who works in a supermarket I have a LOT:

People who let their child pay/pack the shopping when there is an obvious queue. Choose a quieter time.

People who stare at staff expecting us to mind read and
move for them.

People who approach me and say “where the cheese?”
no hello or please.

Letting kids sit/stand in the main bit of the trolley.

People touching 3/4 of the same item before taking one (especially bread and squeezing it!)

People leaning over or in front of me to get something, rather than asking me to step aside for a moment.

People insisting I check out the back when I know something is out of stock.

Kids running around.

People not having their payment ready and faffing around when there a queue.

Im sure I’ll think of more!

It's actually the supermarket online pickers who stand gossiping 2 abreast with their massive trolly things blocking the entire place.

My local Tesco first thing in the morning is horrific for this!

They look at you like you shouldn’t be there if you say say excuse me please and god forbid you don’t dive out of the way if one of them is heading toward you……

FrangipaniBlue · 17/08/2025 23:21

The cashier at my local Aldi who speed scans and if you haven’t moved your stuff fast enough literally shoves it further toward you so that it squashes up and she can scan more.

DH thinks it’s hilarious that the faster she scans the slower I pack……

I once told her I prefer my fruit and veg not bashed and bruised and she looked at me like I had 3 heads….

Speaking of bashed and bruised it wasn't fruit but my fingers caught between tins as they were being launched towards me.
I let out a fuck sake and asked if they could be a bit more careful.

Bringing the whole family shopping with them

I live in a seaside holiday town and this is the norm in our little supermarket. There are frequently much larger groups as well, often young adults standing around the chillers having a prolonged discussion about what to buy for their barbeque/beach party.
Also the supermarket seems to be stocked by decisions of a computer algorithm rather than those of the experienced staff. The programming copes very badly with surges in demand caused by a weekend of fine weather, or vice versa if the grockles are rained off.

Plumnora · 18/08/2025 00:19

Men- and it is always men- who put all their stuff through the checkout, whether it's the self checkout or one with a cashier, pay, and THEN, and only then, suddenly produce a bag and begin to pack the groceries, holding everyone up for another god knows how many minutes, and remaining completely oblivious.
Why can they not pack as they go like the rest of us??!!!!

People who eat or drink things before paying for it.

Why would this bother you ?
