Not my finest artwork, but if vehicle A is is indicating to turn to their right (left in pic!) and vehicle B wants to go straight on, whose right of way is it?

I mean, if B is signalling to turn right (their right) and A is going straight on?

@itsallsohard So, in your scenario, if B signals to turn right, thereby going all the way around the roundabout and going back in the direction from whence they came and A is just driving straight on? In this scenario it would be B that had right of way because they would be crossing the path of A from the right.

Thats all it is; is this car going to cross my path from the right? If so, it’s not safe for you to enter the roundabout.

slightlydistrac · 11/08/2025 00:37

The answer is probably technically A, but for all they know, B may also be turning right and is driving an Audi not indicating, so A may decide to play safe and give way to B anyway.

I would add that it would also be a very dangerous manoeuvre on this roundabout. The only U'ey I've ever seen performed there took someone about a 5 point turn in rush hour and did not go down well! Think they regretted it somewhat.

I was totally viewing B at 12 and A at 6 btw, and trying to offer a suggestion as to why there is such differing opinions on this.

@Rocketlady struggling to see it too. I’d like it spelled out exactly where all of this other stuff is in the Highway Code. The double roundabout diagram even confirms your scenario.

This thread is so illuminating. The highway code is clear and plenty of drivers understand it. However, a significant number believe the exact opposite and doggedly stick to their error despite clear explanations. The fact that a driving instructor is explicitly teaching incorrect manoeuvring further explains why you meet people who can't drive properly every single day.

It seems that all we can do is expect other people to get it wrong..

This
its scary how many people don’t know but perhaps confusion is understandable. It’s mind blowing a driving instructor is also wrong!

And this is the point. Nope, A is not to the right of B. A isn't to the right of B when A and B both enter the roundabout (assuming they enter at the same time) and A and B are equally to the right of each other as they go through the roundabout, and by the time (theoretically) A wants to leave the roundabout to A's right and B's left, A is BEHIND B: the yield-to-the-right rule is irrelevant because at this point A and B are right to right in practice, that is, each is right to the other and neither has priority, but in theory A is behind B. It's that simple. Really.

Earlier I gave the question, what happens if A and B both enter the roundabout and both signalling to turn right? In theory, there is no conflict. In practice, A and B both turn BEHIND each other on the roundabout instead of (as typically happens in standard UK intersections) in front of one another. (Note that this isn't a given outside the UK: in France, for instance, two cars turning across one another are required to go behind one another at any kind of intersection.)

Here, A must go around three-quarters of the roundabout before turning. B must go only around two, ie straight across. Honestly, I don't get why you are all so confused.

Fuck me this is scary!

BCBird · 11/08/2025 21:39

You approach round about. U look to .right. person on right has priority. Obviously if they haven't reached round about u don't wait for them to arrive

BogRollBOGOF · 11/08/2025 21:59

I raise you a mini roundabout where the road markings have rubbed off, and a secret 4th exit onto a one-way street so no emerging traffic other than kamikazee delivery bikes who are apparently more exempt from the highway code than a BMW's indicator.
Apparently a one-way system renders the exit invisible.

Be prepared to be cut up even though you had priority, were on the roundabout, and weren't indicating because you were going straight on into the void that everyone ignores. Fun times Grin

Well, I don't know about anyone else on this thread but I had to navigate several roundabouts today and if I do say so myself, I was on fire. I like to think that other road users were impressed by my rigorous attention to the road.
