Hello there, so I’m 44 and currently on holiday in the US.

I discovered a store called Cavender’s and seem to be in the process of buying everything in it. So far I have bought myself cowboy boots, I’ll add a pic; a saddle bag; Rockin C torn jeans; Wrangler western T shirts…think cowboy hats and rodeo horses on the front in creams and browns; a plaid shirt and I’m seriously debating a small brimmed cowboy hat. Obviously I wouldn’t wear all of this together.

I’m in pretty good shape; size 10 UK, tallish and still keep my hair long and get told I don’t look 44…but…is this going to be acceptable or look a bit odd? Am I going to look like a stylish western country girl…or like I’m having a midlife crisis. Perhaps I should abandon the hat idea?

I have 30 days returns and am here for another 12 days.

Thoughts appreciated!

The boots look great. I wouldn't wear it altogether though.

You will 💯 not wear these when you come home. They will live in the back of your wardrobe only seeing the light of day once every two years when you have a charity clear out.

Edited to add, those boots are Ariat! So a very respectable brand of equestrian footwear, so maybe the boots will get a showing. The hat? I stand by the wardrobe comment.

Ah don’t be mean! This weekend I’ve been on Kings Road and in Camden and it feels like 1 woman in 10 is wearing cowboy boots. Completely mainstream right now I would say…

Personally I wouldn’t wear head to toe cowboy style but I do wear cowboy boots regularly (I’ve several pairs, some shorter and some almost knee high), they go with literally everything, some more western style jeans and T-shirts etc. All pretty easy to wear and I’ve never felt judged or anything! I wouldn’t wear a cowboy hat personally, it simply doesn’t suit me but have one I bought in America on the wall as part of my son’s bedroom decor, ranch/rodeo theme!

Knickknock · 10/08/2025 09:03

Do it!! I absolutely love my gold cowgirl boots and wear them with jeans and dresses! I do live next to a farm mind.

3luckystars · 10/08/2025 04:44

I love it and don’t you apologise for wearing what you like! Go for it and do it in style.

enjoy every minute x

this! I live in a posh rural area in the UK and hat wearing is a practicality round here. You see all kinds of hats including stetsons, straw for summer and felt for winter. I'd buy cowboy boots in a heartbeat but I have very wide short feet and my calves are too wide.

nomorenomoreme · 10/08/2025 09:06

Live where I do! One of our local (UK) farms has a barn dance ( not line dancing, regular live music) in an actual farm barn every year. Some people do get dressed up in the boots and hat. You’ll fit right in!

WatermelonGatorJerky · 10/08/2025 03:05

I absolutely love it! Love the look. Love new country. Love riding. If I won the lottery, I’d definitely buy a ranch.

But yep…worried I’ll look insane back in the UK.

Those boots are awesome!! Love Ariat stuff but It is £££££ in the UK!

Clothes bought on holiday with rare exceptions (eg plain coloured basics) don't translate into wearable clothes on your return. I have a pair of leather trousers bought in the US that are a constant reminder of that hanging in my wardrobe. No, you shouldn't be kitting yourself out in faux cowgirl clothes. It's not an age thing either as far as I'm concerned. A 25 year old Englishwoman wearing this get up would look just as odd.

wow boring attitude much?

JoelenesParrot · 10/08/2025 09:08

Go for it! I’m so jealous- I know what you mean about Cavenders! I love that shop and loaded up on belts, Ariat jeans and Wranglers when I was in Texas over Easter. The boots look great- I definitely prefer square toe to pointed. Just balance things out a bit when you get back and no need to go full-on cowgirl at every occasion - but tie a red bandana to your handbag at all times and turn up your country music nice and loud!

Do it!!! I think the UK highstreet shops are full of cheap mass produced shit...and the higher end stuff is unattainable expensive. It's fast fashion to prop up our failing economy. I hate it and just want some well made, well fitting clothing that I can afford and that isn't some weird style that will be out of fashion before next week. Before anyone tells me that the more expensive stuff lasts longer, of course it does but as explained by Commander Vimes, you have to be able to afford it first. So, if you've found good quality items you like go for it.

charity shops are your friend. Visit a more affluent area and regularly trawl the charity shops there. You will find good brands at affordable prices. I haven’t bought a new item of clothing in six years and I have some really lovely clothes.

I am absolutely astonished that so many posters are telling you not to wear the boots and hat. Loads of people (young trendy ones even!) are wearing cowboy hats and boots at all over London at the moment (and I’m sure elsewhere in the UK, but I don’t live there so I don’t know). Everyone had cowboy boots for the Eras tour!! I have a feeling you are falling victim to the mumsnet crowd who only recommend people wear grey shapeless sacks which cost £700.

I really wanted to buy some boots when I was in Dallas a few years ago because they’re beautiful but they were £££ so I didn’t. I’m jel. Wear whatever you want, OP! And enjoy your holiday. Life is way too short not to have fun with the stuff you wear.

ThisLemonHare · 10/08/2025 09:16

I love it when people find things that make them happy. The boots look awesome and good quality, you love the clothes and life is short. I've found that I give ever less of a stuff about what other people think in my 40s and 50s. Enjoy them!

Turmerictolly · 10/08/2025 09:17

Love these boots and they’ll look great with jeans.

Discoprincess6 · 10/08/2025 09:22

Cowboy boots are very on trend. Wear them. You’re never too old to try fashion.

Mumofyellows · 10/08/2025 09:25

The boots are lovely, I've seen quite a lot of people in cowboy boots recently!

Pinkissmart · 10/08/2025 09:27

So, I'm from a place where people wear cowboy hats for real ( now live in the uk).

Recents went to the Zach Bryan Hyde park concert and there were scads and scads of people wearing cowboy hats/ boots in a non- dress up way. All ages too, but loads of young ones. The whole lineup was pretty country music oriented, and the crowd was quite young
These people live among us.

Britneyfan · 10/08/2025 09:27

Well the boots are super cute, so definitely keep them! As for the rest of it, I am a big believer in wearing what you like anyway!

Mirabai · 10/08/2025 09:31

My sister did the same thing at the same age OP. She went on a riding trek in Idaho and it was easier to buy the kit out there than take it with.

She bought boots, jeans, plaid shirts, t shirts, belts, cowboy hats etc.

She does wear all of it back here, not all together. She looks great.

It’s quite ridiculous I’ve worn cowboy boots since I was 17 and I’m now 54.

abracadabra1980 · 10/08/2025 09:32

I bloody love this post OP - thanks so much for sharing and making me smile 😊 your enthusiasm is palpable and I think the way you plan on styling it is just fine! My dream was always to have my dogs at my heels ‘patrolling my country estate’ and I’ve had Dubarrys (bloody awful and too flat for me), the gilets, the Barbours, every brand of posh welly (they all split), and now I’m in Blundstones - all makes me happy but I do live semi rurally so don’t look weird. Get the cowboy hat and go to a festival. There were loads of people wearing them at one I was at last week. Then we need a pic of you on your horse! 🤠

Find a place in the UK for line dancing?

I was going to say that. Or that has country music at least and you don't have to dance.

Anna20MFG · 10/08/2025 09:37

Just don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys...

I'd absolutely wear the boots and jeans.
