Turning cowgirl at 44

Hello there, so I’m 44 and currently on holiday in the US.

I discovered a store called Cavender’s and seem to be in the process of buying everything in it. So far I have bought myself cowboy boots, I’ll add a pic; a saddle bag; Rockin C torn jeans; Wrangler western T shirts…think cowboy hats and rodeo horses on the front in creams and browns; a plaid shirt and I’m seriously debating a small brimmed cowboy hat. Obviously I wouldn’t wear all of this together.

I’m in pretty good shape; size 10 UK, tallish and still keep my hair long and get told I don’t look 44…but…is this going to be acceptable or look a bit odd? Am I going to look like a stylish western country girl…or like I’m having a midlife crisis. Perhaps I should abandon the hat idea?

I have 30 days returns and am here for another 12 days.

Thoughts appreciated!

Clothes bought on holiday with rare exceptions (eg plain coloured basics) don't translate into wearable clothes on your return. I have a pair of leather trousers bought in the US that are a constant reminder of that hanging in my wardrobe. No, you shouldn't be kitting yourself out in faux cowgirl clothes. It's not an age thing either as far as I'm concerned. A 25 year old Englishwoman wearing this get up would look just as odd.

How on earth does wearing jeans with cowboy boots look “odd”?

OP this is definitely not the place to ask about this! MN has a very odd sense of what you’re “allowed” to wear. Anything slightly deviating from the prescribed norm as they see it will have the great British public rolling in the aisles every time you go to the supermarket. In the real world people wear what they like and what suits them.

I absolutely love it! Love the look. Love new country. Love riding. If I won the lottery, I’d definitely buy a ranch.

But yep…worried I’ll look insane back in the UK.

I used to have similar cowboy boots back in the 90s which I’d wear with floaty tea type dresses (in England). I loved that look.

WarriorN · 10/08/2025 06:38

I have an inner cow girl; I’d keep it but wear bits separately 🤩

I think the cowgirl looks is now a trend. Esp in a post Taylor Swift ars. I see lots of cowboy boots on my Instagram feed - eg Harriet Cowan ( Clarksons Farm fame) - she was in country life with her cowboy boots. She has been known to wear a cowboy hat as well!

I think altogether might be a bit much, but jeans are a staple so jeans, cowgirl inspired top and trainers is pretty standard fare.

The bag you can wear with a dress?

Fairfax and Favour ( Zara Tindall is a brand ambassador) do that horsey look (rather than cowboy)

Cowboy boots should be in everyone's wardrobe.

That’s the look I’m seeing but I think it’s still in? I’ve some almost cow boots, ankle, from Clark’s about 19 yrs ago that look great with dresses or skinny jeans

I’m gen x and would wear.

arcticpandas · 10/08/2025 06:41

Love the boots. They are very stylish and I swear at my large feet for not being able to wear something similar. Go ahead OP- wear everything with confidence and you'll pull it off!

WarriorN · 10/08/2025 06:42

You’ll be 60 in 15 years and definitely regret not keeping and wearing any of it

Mikart · 10/08/2025 06:44

Swear and drink a lot and call yourself Beth

clotheslinefiasco · 10/08/2025 06:47

I say go for the whole lot.

Don't give a stuff what other people think, it's called 'having fun' for those who don't get it!

I've always liked blankets/hoodies with a giant wolf picture on....not sure why, just do 😁

Im a bit surprised by this response and others like it

i admit I absolutely hate the look of cowboy boots and accompaniments, but thats just because its not my cup of tea, however I see people in them all the time, plus jeans like that.
Its not particularly unusual, lots of people dress like that, particularly young girls Ive noticed, is it a new fashion thing?

tallache1 · 10/08/2025 07:10

Go for it! Since Yellowstone has come out cowboy style has quietly come back into fashion. Love the boots. Life is too short to base your actions on what other people think too, if you want to go cowgirl then do it!! (I also would buy a ranch if I won the lottery 😆)

Morestepsplease · 10/08/2025 07:17

If you absolutely love it, get it and wear it! I think the line dancing is a great idea as you will meet like-minded people and you can wear the whole lot.

ShowOfHands · 10/08/2025 07:22

Life's way too short not to make yourself happy.

I've a good friend who travels to Canada and the US regularly and she has a few Western/cowgirl things, including boots and a hat as well as jeans, T-shirts and other accessories. She wears them regularly and then when at Americana and country festivals (there are a few in this country) she wears the lot. She looks fantastic and she's happy. She's 45 btw. Not that it matters.

MN has a core group who will tell you not to bring the items home, but they won't be wearing them.

JamesMacGill · 10/08/2025 07:22

Cowboy boots are back so definitely buy them. You have the calves/legs for it. I wouldn’t overdo the rest otherwise you might look like you’re in costume!

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 10/08/2025 07:23

Cowboy boots are having a moment, I saw loads at a music festival (not country music!) a few weeks ago. I had some last time they were in, 20 years ago, and loved them, I'm tempted to buy some more. I'm also 44.

AxolotlEars · 10/08/2025 07:30

Just do it!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 10/08/2025 07:31

so long as you’re not wearing it all together! I love me a bit of cowboy chic.

just be careful it’s not like when you bring a sombrero home from Spain - made sense there, that sense fades as soon as you land back in the UK and you look/feel like a wally!

I would deffo keep the boots tho, love me some cowboy boots.

Movingon2024 · 10/08/2025 07:37

This reminds me of optimistic purchases made on holiday abroad which I consider at the time will make me look cool/stylish/unusual in the uk.

classics include sparkly silver lame shalwar kameez (Nepal), brightly coloured kaftan and matching turban (Mozambique) and a furry reindeer-hunting waistcoat (Lapland).

in all of them I looked like a total twat.

(There was also the large diamanté horse from India that didn’t fit in the suitcase from India, but we don’t talk about that).

go for it op if you are cool and live in London or similar. But if you are fat, 55 and in a northern industrial town, I counsel against 😆

Lemonsugarpancake · 10/08/2025 07:39

Life's too short not to wear what you like! I wear a straw cowboy hat as my summer sun hat. It reminds me of a great summer. I know a 50 year old with long grey hair who wears the whole get up, she looks like a rock star. Go for it!

TheaBrandt1 · 10/08/2025 07:40

My teen who is very trendy has taken to wearing cowboy boots to parties with her mini skirt. Looks great and she gets lots of compliments!

TheCurious0range · 10/08/2025 07:42

I read this the other day, you're in luck OP cowboy boots are THE boots for this winter.

fungibletoken · 10/08/2025 07:45

It's hard to say about the whole look without seeing it together, but I think the boots on their own look nice. I can imagine them being sold in regular shops.

toiletpiper · 10/08/2025 07:45

cowboy boots always go in & out of fashion so they are fine to buy. same for tartan shirts. I would be careful wearing everything together, it will look like a costume & people will assume you are a Trump fan.

defrazzled · 10/08/2025 07:52

My mum is 72 and dresses like a cow girl. She h er s a lot of compliments and frankly, looks amazing! Go for it, be your true self.

newbie202020 · 10/08/2025 07:56

Sorry - absolutely hideous!
