Hello there, so I’m 44 and currently on holiday in the US.

I discovered a store called Cavender’s and seem to be in the process of buying everything in it. So far I have bought myself cowboy boots, I’ll add a pic; a saddle bag; Rockin C torn jeans; Wrangler western T shirts…think cowboy hats and rodeo horses on the front in creams and browns; a plaid shirt and I’m seriously debating a small brimmed cowboy hat. Obviously I wouldn’t wear all of this together.

I’m in pretty good shape; size 10 UK, tallish and still keep my hair long and get told I don’t look 44…but…is this going to be acceptable or look a bit odd? Am I going to look like a stylish western country girl…or like I’m having a midlife crisis. Perhaps I should abandon the hat idea?

I have 30 days returns and am here for another 12 days.

Thoughts appreciated!

I thought this was going to be a thread about angles/rotation in reverse cowgirl.

Glad it’s not just me!!

Who gives a flying fuck what anybody thinks! If you like it then go for it.

nobody will say anything over here anyway. Possibly they’ll look and silently judge but again, who cares!

Love the cowboy style. Wouldn't wear a whole ensemble at once and probably wouldn't be brave enough to wear the hat but I love the printed tshirts and I don't think cowboy boots are particularly out there.

To me it's similar to the Boho style that I really love (chunky boots with floaty dresses layered over print tshirts)

EssentiallyDecluttering · 10/08/2025 08:05

I've noticed lots of younger women wearing cowboy boots and short skirts recently, they definitely seem to be in. Agree with not wearing the whole lot at once though.

ItalianRedParka · 10/08/2025 08:09

Cowboy boots have made a come back here !

One of my colleagues, who was short and obese, wore a lot of cowboy stuff as she was a country and western singer. I thought it looked really good on her (in the uk). Someone else I know worked in Texas for a bit and he always wore cowboy stuff after that, and I thought he looked like a bellend. But he was. So maybe it’s more about the person than the clothes.

This is the kind of thing I really like

This made me smile because I’ve bought some things that weren’t my usual style on holiday, got them home and thought wtf. I think my brain gets a bit fried.

I hope that’s not the case for you and you rock your new look when you get home. Even if you cool a bit on the look as a whole, the individual bits will look great worn separately. Enjoy 🙂

WonderingWanda · 10/08/2025 08:19

Do it!!! I think the UK highstreet shops are full of cheap mass produced shit...and the higher end stuff is unattainable expensive. It's fast fashion to prop up our failing economy. I hate it and just want some well made, well fitting clothing that I can afford and that isn't some weird style that will be out of fashion before next week. Before anyone tells me that the more expensive stuff lasts longer, of course it does but as explained by Commander Vimes, you have to be able to afford it first. So, if you've found good quality items you like go for it.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 10/08/2025 08:22

Those boots are gorgeous 😍
Apart from the hat, it's all just outdoorsy leisure wear, surely? If you like it wear it. At 44 you shouldn't care what others think.

Silverbirchleaf · 10/08/2025 08:27

WatermelonGatorJerky · 10/08/2025 04:34

How I picture myself styling my new clothes.

That looks fine to me. I think if you go from head to toe it will look a bit much, but if you take elements, then you’re be fine, although the hat will only be at festivals. Alot of shops are selling cowboy-esque clothes in the UK so it is actually a current trend.

HorrorFan81 · 10/08/2025 08:27

Definitely do it! I went to a few different country music events last year in the UK and you could have worn the full lot there. I need those boots 😃

Smittenkitchen · 10/08/2025 08:30

It's surprising to me that people say that the UK is more conservative in terms of acceptable dress. I live in Spain and overall people are much more conservative in what they wear and a much wider range of clothing styles and levels of formality is acceptable in the UK.
I also got into all things cowboy after watching Yellowstone 😍

Toodalooloo44 · 10/08/2025 08:30

@WatermelonGatorJerky Just get all of it! Who cares. You don't have to do a full-on cowboy look at home, but style the pieces separately to suit the surroundings. I went to the us in my 20s and was gifted a big cowboy hat. Left it at my parents and found out later my dad had started wearing it! He absolutely loved it! So whatever really. If it makes you happy 🥰

ScarlettSunset · 10/08/2025 08:36

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone wearing those at any age. I love the look too. I'm 51 and recently just bought myself a new plaid shirt and it looks great with jeans. I'd wear the boots too except these days they're harder to come by here in the UK - at least in my size.
I don't think anyone would think twice about it. It's pretty socially acceptable to wear whatever you like these days.

Candleabra · 10/08/2025 08:36

I quite like them. Not together obviously.
Though I always say you should never buy clothes on holiday. Something happens to your brain to change how you think you dress then you get home and wonder wtf you were thinking!

EpsilonOne · 10/08/2025 08:38

I say if it makes you happy then go for it - life is too short to miss out on stuff you love just because of the fear of what other people might think. And it sounds like all the things you're buying will look great! I have some traditional cowboy boots which a friend in Texas got for me and I love them and often get complimented on them.

TimeForATerf · 10/08/2025 08:39

You will 💯 not wear these when you come home. They will live in the back of your wardrobe only seeing the light of day once every two years when you have a charity clear out.

Edited to add, those boots are Ariat! So a very respectable brand of equestrian footwear, so maybe the boots will get a showing. The hat? I stand by the wardrobe comment.

AngelinaFibres · 10/08/2025 08:42

WatermelonGatorJerky · 10/08/2025 04:49

Definitely will pick a piece to wear and save the rest of the stuff. I don’t want to look as though I’m in fancy dress.

I think the boots were actually my biggest worry. I love them - but need to up my confidence enough to wear them. I did try and look for a more casual style and nothing too showy and I think these were a good balance.

My exhusband had 11 pairs of cowboy boots ( addictive personality). He and his second wife used to wear matching pairs to shop at Sainsbury's in Cheltenham ( met them there once to swap over the children). Not my thing , but many things are not my thing , so you should do what you want to do Op. Scrunchy bum leggings are everywhere. Cowboy boots are never going to be as vile as those

idontreallyknowmavis · 10/08/2025 08:46

Yes, I love this! I think you should go full Yellowstone. I’m inching towards menopause and the only saving grace is that I don’t give a f**k what other people think!

AlphaApple · 10/08/2025 08:48

Genuinely thought this was going to be a sex thread.

OP, the boots are awesome. Everything you described sounds great. Go for it.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 10/08/2025 08:49

Country style is having a moment right now and I think you’ll regret not buying them! How good will you look in Autumn in your skinny jeans, cowboy boots and a plaid shirt?! I have cowboy boots (not Ariat though, you fancy thing!) and I wear them proudly with denim shorts, skinny jeans or a floaty dress.

PS do give line dancing a go! It’s huge round here at the moment and if you go to a good class, the teacher will really break down the dances for you and you move you have a couple of easy dances under your (cowboy) belt, you can pretty much dance to anything and look impressive!

metterklume · 10/08/2025 08:54

I have all this (bar the saddle bag) and wear it - and as a fellow tall-size-10-with-long-hair, take it from me that yes, you can absolutely get away with this in the UK.

The key is to wear a toned-down version of the look. So the spangles and tassels and bright colours are out, but everything else goes. The boots you posted look perfect.

On the hat: it will fly here, if you buy a plain soft felt hat (not a big stiff conch-adorned thing). Actually they work really well here: keep the rain off in winter, but also double as a sun hat.

I say go for it!
