Awake and changed my username for this one and sounds crazy.

Ok so couple of odd things happening lately in my house. At home alone until the weekend and it will be a long few nights.

There are seven television (not podcast) episodes of ‘Uncanny’ on BBC iPlayer . Watching them might make you think again about dismissing ghosts so easily.

I'm sorry I'm not interested.

I don't believe in ghosts and regard belief in them as superstitious nonsense.

Besides why would I want to believe in ghosts? Real life is scary and worrying enough without inventing supernatural explanations.

The growth in interest in the supernatural has grown in tandem with the decline in religious beliefs. A lot of people just don't want to be grounded in reality.

FrogFrogFrog · 07/08/2025 06:37

Every culture and society since time began has had a belief in ghosts, with literally millions of accumulated reports of sightings and experiences. Personally I think most of them can be explained rationally, but that it defies belief that every single report over the centuries is from someone lying or mistaken or insane. I've had a few experiences myself that made me realise science doesn't currently have an answer for everything.

chatgptsbestmate · 07/08/2025 06:57

Pop to your local church today and ask the Vicar/Rector/Curate to bless your home with holy water

myplace · 07/08/2025 07:50

Rational response- if your phone has been linked to the Alexa speaker, watching videos or social media can play through them too.

DS came up from the kitchen to tell me my phone was still linked and he could hear the adverts and videos on FB that I was scrolling through. My phone was on silent, I had no idea.

Less rational response- we don’t know what the source of some stuff we perceive is. We can’t measure it if we don’t know where or what it is. There’s loads of science that’s unexplored still. Our bodies give off energy. Dogs can sense their owner’s well being from different buildings.

What some people sense could be that type of phenomenon- like an epilepsy or diabetes assistance dog alerting despite being at a distance from their person.

There will be rational explanations for phenomena- we just don’t know what they are yet.

Sorry not really thinking about grammar atm.

Don't apologise, you were very clear.

Uncanny is a shockingly bad pseudo documentary series that bears no close inspection at all. It is a scripted, acted entertainment programme.

Science, or indeed anybody doesn’t need to prove something doesn’t exist, only that it does. It’s a fact that until now ( 2025 ) there is no evidence/proof whatsoever to support the existence of ghosts, or indeed anything at all in the “ paranormal”

Edited

There's plenty of evidence indicating paranormal activity - check out the University of Virginia Division of Perceptual Studies, for one. Look into their work with an open mind and I daresay you'll be surprised by what you find.

Fordian · 07/08/2025 08:51

I live in a 30 year old estate house. I’m rarely alone in it, but when I am, boy, is it noisy! If you sit watching TV, it sounds exactly like someone is walking across the carpeted floor of our bedroom above. The creak starts at one end, and advances across the length of the room. Usually just once of an evening. Because it happens so often, we take no notice, and we know it’s just the house cooling but it’s unnerving if you’re alone! Also, something goes ‘clunk’ in the attic about once a week.

However, I can’t explain the large silver-coloured ring that appeared in the middle of the dining table overnight, about 10 years ago!

Is it really? The contributors seemed so plausible. I really believed they were genuine!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 07/08/2025 12:41

The contributions may have interesting tales to tell, but Robins starting point is always to sensationalise and his bias towards "believer" is a joke. He uses "professional" believers and sceptics who get about two sentences each and add nothing, then he will pick up on some crazy point that has been postulated and represent it as a solid fact rather than exploring it. Then why does every contributor sound like they are perfectly rehearsed? But the decider for me was one of his podcasts which happened to be about a property not far from us. The facts as presented about the property ( age, location) were just wrong. All made up to sound good, in other words.

Others may not agree! I know he's popular but I hate misrepresentation.

A couple of years ago I was playing Spotify on my speaker at work... Mum was listening to Julio Iglaseas at home. I managed to shoot the volume up and down and switch Julio off from work... Scared Mum half to death!! 🤣

How could your DF give you an ornament if he is deceased?

There are no such thing as ghosts. Go back to sleep.

Don’t be obtuse.

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 07/08/2025 13:41

The C of E actually have clergy who deal specifically with these matters. When I had a lot of disturbances in a house I was told (by the vicar who dealt with such things) that there are three things that are always noted during a disturbance. Building work which alters the original layout of the house. Discourse. Children. 1 of them is enough apparently. People poo poo the idea until they experience something dramatic .

awakeandasleep · 07/08/2025 13:45

I am sleeping downstairs until the weekend.

Although I feel better, I did say last night in the rooms I feel uneasy in, that they are welcome to stay but not to frighten me making noises or moving things around! This has really helped me!

I don’t know about creepy Alexa’s but check out GravelMan on TikTok if you can as it’s hilarious…
His neighbours are right pains in the butt & he’s in a terrace house, modern or old I know not, but the walls are thin so he hears a lot of their noise.
At varying times, day or night, he manages to connect to their Bluetooth speakers & blast out songs in the middle of the night - he takes requests from his followers.
Now I know this could be him connecting to a Bluetooth speaker in his own house, his neighbour could be in on it & pre-warned or even why don’t they turn the bloody speaker off at night but I just take it as I see it & enjoy the ridiculousness of it all.
So the moral of this story is always turn all Bluetooth connected devices off at night…

Oh & I believe in different energies. I can smell my Mum’s perfume in her/my house yet she was last there in 2017. She moved into a care home & due to dementia & her decline she hadn’t worn it for years previously. It was her signature scent, one I remember from my childhood,
Others smell it & we’ve sniffed all the furniture in the area & there is no smell. It’s like walking through a cloud of it, not linked to any scented furniture, the scent just hangs in the air. It doesn’t transfer onto your clothes. I’d lived there for 5 years & never smelt it before.
It started in 2022 nightly after she died & is in a really specific place. It was a bit strange to begin with as it was every day/night, now it only happens when I’m upset.
I live mostly alone & although I still have some of this perfume, I can’t think why friends, if they stay which is rarely, would rummage around in my cupboards & spray the perfume everywhere as it’s not linked to a surface.
So we chat & I let her know my problems & it gives me comfort. I always say hello as I walk past even if there’s no smell.
Again, just because there’s no proof doesn’t mean something doesn’t exist.

Basis of most religions, isn’t it?! 🤣 Only half joking, I was brought up in a religion, the doctrine sticks!

when people say there’s never been any proof of paranormal stuff existing I always wonder what type of proof they mean because there are literally thousands of videos of ‘ghost caught on camera’ type things now that we all have smart phones. Not saying I can personally vouch for the veracity of all of them but they are absolutely a thing.

I very much doubt there is a photograph or video of a ghost that can’t be explained as something quite normal.

It’s the absence of good sharp footage of a ghost that’s so striking. There are CCTV cameras, ring doorbells, dashcams and, as you say, phones everywhere - many billions of them around the world. But not one solitary headless monk or Victorian widow has ever shown up. Not one.

Awakeandasleep

if you’re still uneasy, can I suggest getting hold of a copy of Paranormality by Professor Richard Wiseman?

He debunks with science an awful of lot of the experiences that people put down to paranormal phenomena. I was like you - hated being alone in the house overnight, used to sleep with all the lights on, etc. Probably the result of liking ghost stories as a kid, but I couldn’t get it out of my head at night time.

I read his book and it gave me such a huge sense of relief. Understanding the scientific reason for a lot of ‘phenomena’ really helped me recognise that I was creating my own fear by assuming the worst and then letting it spiral.
