'Secret wedding' dress conundrum

AphroditesSeashell · 03/08/2025 13:54

Planning an elopement-style wedding for March 2026. A Thursday afternoon registry office ceremony, followed by a quiet meal with our two witnesses. Not booked yet; in our Local Authority, for this kind of 2-person ceremony, you can only apply for the date 3 months in advance.

I've seen a nice dress online. Not sure whether to go for it, or if it's too soon in the process considering nothing is actually booked. It's £240, which i know for a wedding dress is a bargain, but for a dress more generally, I'd consider it a big purchase.

Thought process:
● what if I don't see another one I like as much, if I hold off? Assuming this one will be long sold out/off sale by end of the year. I don't LOVE it but I haven't seen anything I like more. I think for a low-key wedding, hoping for a stunning dress within this kind of budget may be unrealistic.
● what if it's the opposite and I buy this one and in Jan-26 I see an even nicer one?
● What if I change dress size? Bear in mind I've been the same size for years but I'm sure many people could empathise with the eternal hope of shedding some pounds. Maybe I'll magically get some disciple following the purchase of the dress!

If anyone's interested, this is the one I'm considering. The one major downside of a secret wedding is not having anyone to discuss this kind of thing with in real life!

It's a beautiful dress. Get it!

PermanentTemporary · 03/08/2025 14:11

Pretty dress, but I think unless you absolutely love it, you can do better with that budget. Is there a dress that you absolutely love but can’t afford - what style would you prefer? Could you rent something you love more?

I've seen some beautiful dresses but they are either quite a bit more expensive, circa £600 or they're too OTT for such a low key affair. I'm drawn to sparkles, ruffles, cape style dresses but I think they're better suited to more substantial celebrations. I'd feel out of place in a bog standard restaurant wearing something that screams "wedding!!"

The one I've linked hits a nice balance, I think, of pretty bridal but I can also wear it to walk around Glasgow city centre without drawing too much attention. Still dont know if I'm just jumping in because I'm an impulsive person and also a bit crap at shopping. I sort of want this task to be over already so I can free up the headspace lol 😅

We'd do it next week but the one compromise on such a small affair is that we'll at least get a nice long weekend break to celebrate together. Sadly annual leave restrictions at work mean it has to be 2026. We figured we'd push it towards Spring in the vague hope of getting some dry weather for our weekend away. Although in Scotland, it's impossible to plan that kind of thing too much. We've been together 8 years this year, so another few months isnt an issue for us.

Next have a similar one for £95

If you screen shot the photo you can compare dresses and prices

HazelCritic · 03/08/2025 15:02

I've found the dress on Vinted but not sure what size you are.

So you could risk not buying it now and then trying to get it secondhand nearer the time if you've not found one you love more. Or buy it now and then sell it at a loss if you fall in love with a different dress in the meantime.

I guess it depends on how much you love it. It's not my style at all, but if I were you I'd at least buy it to try on.

Noominia · 03/08/2025 16:03

I agree with the first reply. It’s a pretty dress. If you love it then buy it. If you’re just thinking it will do then don’t and keep looking. If it’s mail order you can buy it and decide how much you love it when it arrives. The cape suggested by pp does look lovely too if you already have a suitable dress to put it over.

Saz12 · 03/08/2025 16:09

You dont love it. So dont buy it.

If you're only considering it because its appropriate and you like it, then don't bother - therell be other ones you like just as much, and you might find one you do love. IMO it might be a bit "little girl" IRL, but is pretty.

olympicsrock · 03/08/2025 17:39

If you don’t live it don’t buy it. My wedding dress had similar vibes , roses on the shoulders blush pink embroidery . I felt like a princess. How about a nearly new dress ? You could get something amazing !

Was just about to say same! Lots of similar N&T dresses on vinted!

Neveranynamesleft · 03/08/2025 18:30

My opinion is I dont like it and reminds me of a nightie. But that's just my opinion and if you like it then get it. However, I do think Vinted is your friend here.

curious79 · 03/08/2025 18:33

this is very much a summery dress. If you wait until cDecember to buy a dress you won't have summery options. You would have to last minute buy new season items coming out in January post Christmas sales. If you're ok with last minute then go for it
If you love this dress, and it looks good on you, buy it

Sandunesandseashells · 03/08/2025 18:43

You said sparkles, ruffles and capes - check out Raishma midi length or longer gowns. My link is to midi and sale is on.

AvidJadeShaker · 03/08/2025 19:06

It’s a lovely dress, are you certain you wouldn’t prefer to spend £240 on a dress you could wear again?

ItsNotYou852 · 03/08/2025 20:03

It's a lovely dress but if you don't really love it I would carry on looking.
We had a very quiet registry office wedding.also and I let my Mum persuade me that the outfit I had bought was "too much" and to wear a more sensible dress. Regretted it ever since, just because it's a quiet wedding doesn't mean you should settle for something that doesn't feel fabulous to you, whatever that is!

KitchenDancefloor · 03/08/2025 20:13

I agree with the PPs, get something you absolutely love (within budget)

I was recently at a restaurant with a bride, groom and their two witnesses at the next table. They’d had an elopement style wedding too but she was in a fabulous traditional bridal column dress and killer heels. She didn’t look out of place but it was obvious they’d just got married so lots of strangers bought drinks for their table. It was so lovely to see them so happy and everyone wishing them well and made this old cynic a bit teary.

BeaLola · 03/08/2025 21:31

Don't buy it unless you Iove it

Don't go safe because it's a small wedding - but something you love and will look back on fondly

Tbh when I saw it I thought it was very summery for a a March wedding

deste · 03/08/2025 21:36

My DD has hers and the wedding is 13 months away. Its not too soon.

Jackrabbit22 · 03/08/2025 21:43

It's just beautiful, I think you should get it and try it on. Can always return if not the dress of your dreams!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/08/2025 21:46

That dress is beautiful

Momstermash94 · 03/08/2025 21:57

OP I got married a few days ago in a registry office with just immediate family and initially I was going to get just a nice white dress to wear, but I did feel a bit gutted that I'd never have typical wedding photos in a typical wedding dress even though I only wanted a small ceremony.
In the end I bought a wedding dress on Shein (less than £80, surprisingly good quality) that does scream "wedding" and wore it for the ceremony and photos after and then switched into a lovely, summery white maxi dress for the dinner and drinks afterwards both to be more comfortable and to not look OTT. I got that dress on vinted for less than £30, we tried to keep to a budget and didn't want to spend too much and I am delighted now to have a photos that do scream "wedding", while also prioritising my comfort for the celebration after. If you want a full wedding dress you should do it, dont worry about looking OTT! If you don't want that, the dress you posted is lovely and I'm sure it will be beautiful on you
