'Secret wedding' dress conundrum

AphroditesSeashell · 03/08/2025 13:54

Planning an elopement-style wedding for March 2026. A Thursday afternoon registry office ceremony, followed by a quiet meal with our two witnesses. Not booked yet; in our Local Authority, for this kind of 2-person ceremony, you can only apply for the date 3 months in advance.

I've seen a nice dress online. Not sure whether to go for it, or if it's too soon in the process considering nothing is actually booked. It's £240, which i know for a wedding dress is a bargain, but for a dress more generally, I'd consider it a big purchase.

Thought process:
● what if I don't see another one I like as much, if I hold off? Assuming this one will be long sold out/off sale by end of the year. I don't LOVE it but I haven't seen anything I like more. I think for a low-key wedding, hoping for a stunning dress within this kind of budget may be unrealistic.
● what if it's the opposite and I buy this one and in Jan-26 I see an even nicer one?
● What if I change dress size? Bear in mind I've been the same size for years but I'm sure many people could empathise with the eternal hope of shedding some pounds. Maybe I'll magically get some disciple following the purchase of the dress!

If anyone's interested, this is the one I'm considering. The one major downside of a secret wedding is not having anyone to discuss this kind of thing with in real life!

Why is it secret?

The dress is nice & summery. Find a lovely sparkles, ruffles or cape style dress. It's your wedding and doesn't matter how many people are at it. You deserve to were a dress that you love and suits your personality best.
If I saw someone who was walking in their wedding attire to or from a restaurant, I would be admiring them and offering them best wishes & to enjoy their day.

That’s really pretty 🤩 Just go for it.

If you're Glasgow based, you should try here - https://www.instagram.com/fridaandcocovintage?igsh=MWh5dHVoaDZxM3YzZw==

You'll definitely see stunning dresses, ruffles, sparkles in that shop. But the person who owns it is really passionate about what she does too.

MidnightScroller · 06/08/2025 07:20

Gorgeous - get it! It might not look as good on so at least you’ll have time then to find the perfect one

NetZeroZealot · 06/08/2025 07:31

You need to try it on to see how you feel in it.
You’ll soon know if it’s the dress for you.

Why is it secret?

Simply because we aren't telling anyone we're doing it.

We don't want anyone's input or opinions on how we're planning to do it.
We don't want anyone inviting themselves along - my mum would absolutely show up uninvited. She'd think it was cute to be stood outside throwing confetti or some such thing.
We don't want any gifts.
We don't want family to offer, or feel obliged to offer, any funds towards the day.

We will send a text to everyone after our little break away, and that will be that.

Thanks, I work quite close to this shop and have popped in a few times for a wee look. Might go again with an actual objective rather than to just lust after the sequins!

Only thing is, I'm a size 16/18 and I don't think she carries very many plus size options.

Find a local seamstress.

YouDoIDo · 06/08/2025 09:32

They do have the dress on Vinted @AphroditesSeashell it’s half the price BNWT https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/6772760162-needle-and-thread-dress
you could always get it second hand and then if you see something you like more put the other on Vinted for the same price you paid then you won’t be loosing your money.
congratulations by the way I hope you have an amazing day ❤️

@AphroditesSeashell See, I would not have thought Frida and Coco would be your style from the dress in the OP. It's boring, it's a 'blend in' dress and I know you don't want to stand out as a bride, but I think you can do better. Have you seen Miss Bush Bridal on Instagram? Not for the wedding dresses she stocks, but the owner is a similar size to you and she has great style. You could get some inspo. She wears a lot of Sister Jane which might be ideal for you. Special but not obviously bridal.

Some suggestions:

Feria Tiered Midi Dress – Sister Jane
Delice Taffeta Mini Dress – Sister Jane
Serene Bow Mini Dress – Sister Jane
Heat Haze Jacquard Midi Dress – Sister Jane

These are beautiful but unfortunately the DREAM range seems to stop at a size 14, which is disappointing in 2025.

DREAM Camellia Jacquard Maxi Dress – Sister Jane
DREAM Jasmine Embroidered Maxi Dress – Sister Jane

Delice Taffeta Mini Dress

Flirty meets refined in this Mini Dress, crafted from textured taffeta in the dreamiest shade of baby pink. The finishing flourish? A removable rose satin tie brooch that lets you dial up the romance. Sophisticated and sweet, this dress is a love story...

Woohoo OPs size too and the seller has good reviews. Good work! 🤗

AphroditesSeashell · 06/08/2025 11:41

I've decided not to purchase the dress I originally linked. Having read some comments that it looks like a little girls' dress, I can see where that's coming from. I still think it's very pretty and something I'd wear but perhaps it's not the one for my special day.

I'll keep looking. As mentioned before, I really am crap at shopping so this feels like a task to be completed rather than enjoyed. I'll need to work on my mindset! As people have said, if I can't go glam on my wedding, then when can I?!

There's some great suggestions people have kindly given and I'll definitely take a look at all the sites that have been recommended. I might bore you all with more links and requests for opinions.

What if you ordered it now just to try on. You might find when it's on your feelings on it are defined either way. If you don't fall in love with it on, then you know you can return now and have plenty of time to resume your search with this dress completely out of your mind.

Teajenny7 · 06/08/2025 13:39

I think it is lovely. Personally, I wouldn't want anything from Vinted for my intimate wedding.
You could sketch what you want and approach some dressmakers. A friends daughter but an add on local FB and has got exactly what's she wants. She spoke to several dressmakers.i have seen a photo and it is gorgeous and a unique still in a similar colour to this dress.
Enjoy your special day. I got married in Glasgow in glorious sunshine many years ago

We’ve lived in Glasgow - west the dress you love and don’t worry about what anyone else will think in a restaurant!

They won’t notice and if I did notice someone very dressed up I’d assume they’d been to an event or wedding! Have an amazing day!

SilverpetalShine · 07/08/2025 08:17

It's a pretty dress but if I'm honest I'm more intrigued with the elopement, lol won't your family be hurt? Weddings btw. are a public event, anyone can come, I'm fairly certain you have to at least have a witness.

SchoolZooTrip · 07/08/2025 08:20

That's gorgeous! I vote get it and then stop looking so you don't spot something that "could have been". If you shed some pounds you can get it altered :)

She literally says in the OP about witnesses

This style of ceremony and celebration is what suits us. You seem to be assuming we are very young, fresh and/or naïve. We are none of those things, nor is this a first marriage for either of us. I used to think the wedding was important. Now I know that it's the marriage that's important.

Frankly, I don't care if family would be hurt; it isn't about them. Both families have participated in weddings of ours in the past, with the fancy cars, 4 course meals, open bars and parties. This time, they'll find out via text and without a doubt, they'll be thrilled for us.

And yes, I know about the need for witnesses. My children (18yo+) will be the witnesses and we'll celebrate as a very happy family of four.

Ooh that Phase Eight one is gorgeous. I'd have ordered that to try on, for sure. Sadly sold out in most sizes, including mine. I suspect it's coming to the end of it's lifecycle, as it's also sold out on other sites (Next) with no option to be notified if it comes back into stock.

Thanks to all of the great suggestions people have posted, it's reassured me that there are lots of beautiful dresses out there and I don't need to dive straight in. I'll continue my search but I definitely feel like the pressure has lifted. I've been given some confidence that it's OK to be a bit glam and I've broadened my search options accordingly😍

SilverpetalShine · 07/08/2025 10:40

No, not assuming anything, I'm just a people person. I'm always interested in their journey. I'm glad you're doing things your way. If you're confident in your man I'm sure you'll have a great day/life together. I agree with you entirely that it's the marriage that matters. Congratulations in advance.💐
