'Secret wedding' dress conundrum

AphroditesSeashell · 03/08/2025 13:54

Planning an elopement-style wedding for March 2026. A Thursday afternoon registry office ceremony, followed by a quiet meal with our two witnesses. Not booked yet; in our Local Authority, for this kind of 2-person ceremony, you can only apply for the date 3 months in advance.

I've seen a nice dress online. Not sure whether to go for it, or if it's too soon in the process considering nothing is actually booked. It's £240, which i know for a wedding dress is a bargain, but for a dress more generally, I'd consider it a big purchase.

Thought process:
● what if I don't see another one I like as much, if I hold off? Assuming this one will be long sold out/off sale by end of the year. I don't LOVE it but I haven't seen anything I like more. I think for a low-key wedding, hoping for a stunning dress within this kind of budget may be unrealistic.
● what if it's the opposite and I buy this one and in Jan-26 I see an even nicer one?
● What if I change dress size? Bear in mind I've been the same size for years but I'm sure many people could empathise with the eternal hope of shedding some pounds. Maybe I'll magically get some disciple following the purchase of the dress!

If anyone's interested, this is the one I'm considering. The one major downside of a secret wedding is not having anyone to discuss this kind of thing with in real life!

If you don’t really love it, don’t get it. Buy a dress you do love - even if it is OTT. If you can’t be OTT for your wedding, when can you?

but think about what you want. Does it have to be white/bridal?

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 03/08/2025 23:37

Omg! Its so beautiful

owlexpress · 03/08/2025 23:40

I don't like it, it looks like a little girl's party dress. Hard to make other recommendations without knowing your size, shape, preferences etc. Do you want a registry office wedding? You probably know, but just in case you don't - you can have a legal wedding anywhere in Scotland so if you do fancy going all out you could go somewhere nice by the coast for example and dress up for the ceremony and meal.

I think it’s beautiful

Newstove · 04/08/2025 01:01

The only reason to buy now is so you can stop looking at dresses, but you sound like you think you'll find something you'll like more. You have the time, so I don't think you should get this one.

If you haven't got something a couple of weeks before the wedding, that's the time to go for a good enough dress.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/08/2025 01:09

You'll be wearing a winter raincoat over that on a Thursday in March in Glasgow.

pushthebuttonnn · 04/08/2025 04:38

It's a beautiful dress 🥰 I would buy it and return if you don't love it when it's on.

pilates · 04/08/2025 06:10

It’s stunning I would buy it now

KeenSnail · 04/08/2025 06:35

Vinted have so many similar Needle and Thread dresses for significantly less. Some even new with tags whereas others have been lightly worn. I’d at least check there before buying.

ooooohlala · 04/08/2025 06:37

My wedding dress was Needle and Thread, at a similar price. I absolutely loved it and have no regrets!

Not that it should matter, but my wedding was all the bells and whistles country house job. So don’t see it as a compromise dress for a smaller wedding, it’s just that lots of dresses marketed for wedding have silly prices.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/08/2025 06:43

Ever pretty do similar dresses and can also buy off eBay / Vinted

https://www.ever-pretty.co.uk/collections/wedding-dresses

you don’t seem wowed by it so it isn’t the dress for you

and if only booking wedding for that date so can go away after , book now for nicer weather and go away next year for long weekend

It’s very pretty but you need to feel great on the day and if you don’t love it I’d keep looking. You could get it and try it on but send it back if you don’t feel it’s right? If you decide to keep it just stop looking for others so you don’t get dress fomo.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/08/2025 01:09

You'll be wearing a winter raincoat over that on a Thursday in March in Glasgow.

I was also thinking this. You’ll need to have an appropriate coat as well!

EnterFunnyNameHere · 04/08/2025 08:10

I think it's a lovely dress but very summery which makes me wonder:

  1. are you going to be warm enough in it? Don't want to be shivering with cold!

  2. if you do like it/that summery style, there might not be masses to choose from if you do leave it.

That said, don't buy it if you don't love it. Have you looked at any posh hire places, you might be able to get something really special for your budget on hire.

Wreckinball · 04/08/2025 08:15

Order it, try it on and see if you feel special in it. Send it back if you don’t. You’ll know when you’re wearing it.

Comtesse · 04/08/2025 08:21

Think you need to try it on before you make a decision.

jenny38 · 04/08/2025 08:23

Absolutely love the dress, but I think you won't know until you try it on.

Francestein · 04/08/2025 08:26

I think it's just gorgeous. If you love it and you'd be comfortable in it, go for it!

PullTheBricksDown · 04/08/2025 08:53

I like it! See if your size is on Vinted? You could resell if you find something you like better. I would like the security of knowing I had a dress I was happy with.

@Silvertulips can you post the Next link?

Iris2020 · 04/08/2025 09:04

I love that dress - I'd go for it.

MsAlignment · 04/08/2025 09:21

Wreckinball · 04/08/2025 08:15

Order it, try it on and see if you feel special in it. Send it back if you don’t. You’ll know when you’re wearing it.

This, first. Obviously.

If you don’t feel you want it, send it back. No harm done - you might do this with twenty dresses …

If you try it on and think it might be the one, keep it - and then if you find something you like more, sell the first, buy the second.

(It seems very clear to me - but then, I’m not involved!)

However - Glasgow in March will be grey and cold. You will need either a magnificent wedding coat, or a more wintery dress.

Isitreallysohard · 04/08/2025 09:23

Get it! Hopefully you only marry once! Technically you're saving thousands if you're not having a big wedding. Have a lovely day!! 😍

breakfastdinnerandtea · 04/08/2025 09:26

I found my wedding dress on asos and bought it almost straight away, around 9 months in advance and I’m glad I did!! A year after my wedding and I’m looking for my friend’s wedding and the dresses that weren’t from bridal shops were appalling. I couldn’t see 1 that I would wear, and neither did she. She had a registry office wedding and spent ££££ on her dress.

MsAlignment · 04/08/2025 09:29

Do you want a dress that becomes a keepsake / heirloom, or is it just for the day? If the latter, given your budget, might you consider renting a dress?

Here, for instance:

By Rotation

To be honest I would look amongst general dresses on any rental site - Hurr, Selfridges, etc - rather than specifically for a wedding dress, to avoid inflated ‘wedding’ prices.

spoonbillstretford · 04/08/2025 10:10

That is absolutely beautiful and a good price, OP.

I did the same. Had a look in the big wedding chains and an independent shop locally and saw nothing I liked. There were dresses I liked online but they were not as easy to get hold of 20 years ago. Then I just thought I'll have a peep at the Monsoon sale and bought a dress that was quite nice as a standby. I did lose some weight (as I'd put some on in the previous year or so) and had it taken in to fit like a made to measure, and it looked pretty knockout on the day. I'd find a local seamstress who can adjust it for you.
