DH and DD's luggage arrived, but mine didn't. I bought new hiking boots, new swimsuits (never leave the house usually and this confirms I was right). Also contained all the toiletries, towels, some medication that's liquid so I didn't want to risk it, along with jewellery

I know "travel insurance" , but it doesn't help when you arrive in a cold country with nothing.

It was Easyjet and I wasn't the only one on the flight who had luggage missing - but they dont fly here for another 3-4 days, so not a lot of hope.

@Itstwelveoclocksomewhere - I always take underwear and basic change clothing ie leggings and T-shirt in hand luggage. The amount of times I have seen other people get thrown up on ( by other people), drinks or food spilt, sit on plane seat that was wet etc…that’s not even covering if you have kids or luggage lost. you always want a change.

re why Iceland has clothes rental places. I think it’s just because the weather can be so harsh. So many items like snow boots, hiking boots, thick iceland winter coats etc can cost a lot if all bought if you don’t already own. Many people in winter especially might plan on only hiring the heavy outdoor equipment especially to save buying at all.

Sorry you are having such a bad time, OP. I had no idea EasyJet were so useless in their compensation policy - KLM lost my case for a few days when I was on my way to a remote area of Scotland (so I understand the bra issue) and it took them a while to pay up but they handed over a couple of hundred quid for clothing and toiletries with good grace.

TizerorFizz · 05/08/2025 07:59

@ChaToilLeamEasy Jet are “no frills”. Obviously not the same as KLM. The scheduled airlines will have a more generous compensation policy than EJ or Ryanair. You choose a no frills airline based on cost and you then don’t get the full package conferred by scheduled airlines as you don’t pay for it!

UninterestedBeing12 · 05/08/2025 08:04

I never found easy jet or Ryan Air especially cheap. Once you add in the huge baggage charges you might as well pay for BA or Icelandair and get better perks.

capybaraforlife · 05/08/2025 08:13

i was there two weeks ago and this was my biggest fear as we were hopping straight onto a cruise. we had a connecting flight in europe and thankfully due to my airtags i could get the ground staff to go and get our cases (they said they were on the plane and they clearly weren't!)

none of this helps you but i'm sending a lot of sympathy. there's an H&M in town if you can get there for a few cheap basics.

UPDATE

I managed to have s lovely day yesterday, made even better by a message saying they'd found the bag.

When we got back it still saux 'waiting for arrival at airport', I wanted to know which airport (whether it hadn't made it to the plane, or been sent elsewhere).

I knew ringing EasyJet was futile, so made use of their live chat, asked to chat with an agent and she said my case was on the way.

It had a more adventurous journey than me, as EasyJet have no flights until Wednesday, so they sent it to Milan, then from Milan to Keflavik.

DH was contacted at 10pm ro ask if he wanted them to deliver it or collect, as we're near the airport we collected.

For anyone reading who has any problems with EasyJet, use the live chat function and ask the AI to be put through to an agent, they are so much better than phone ones.

Lots of useful tips here for me to try next time. Thank you all.

Great update @Anonymousemouses have a lovely trip.

Glad we went underseat luggage only for a week in Iceland. It was a tight squeeze but at least we knew we had everything. If we ever travel with proper luggage we always carry pjs, basic wash stuff (toothbrush, paste) and a change of clothes in the hand luggage. I've been caught out in the past with either luggage not arriving or having all my luggage stolen from the back of our car. (left with the PJs I was wearing, sliders and a toothbrush for 2 days until we could get to s supermarket to buy something).
We did find a few second hand clothes shops in Iceland.
I'm surprised you didn't travel in the boots, they are heavy so I prefer not to waste my luggage allowance with them.
We also try to take old clothes on holiday so that it they get lost, it's not the end of the world and if we need more space for souvenirs we can ditch some old socks and pants to make space.

MellersSmellers · 05/08/2025 10:10

What a damn nuisance OP
I suggest you go to the public hot baths in Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon as you don't need clothes in either of those places! And they're great.
Hope your luggage gets to you soon!

Not if you've only ever travelled alone with one suitcase!

Then how is it something you need to do, I assume you aren't going to start taking two smaller suitcases and mix and match just in case 😂

This happened to me on a 4 night trip to miami. Id done internal flight from Manchester to Heathrow then Heathrow miami and no suitcase. Luckily I always divide clothes equally between suitcases and take first 48 hours of essentials in our hand luggage. British Airways where absolutely lovely and offered us £125 each to buy stuff as it was such a short stay . I know its no help now but may help in future x

Will definitely do that in future. I'm amazed that the case arrived so quickly as the communication wasnt great, but impressed they sent it on to flights to get here, I assumed it would arrive on the next direct flight.

There are actually two hire shops in Iceland and it appears common. But will definitely mix up cases next time.

I keep reading the title of this thread and imagine a lady stood in a supermarket full of freezers, naked!

viques · 05/08/2025 11:30

Glad your case turned up OP. I like easyJet, only because they didn’t laugh at me when I turned up in good time for my flight but unfortunately at the wrong airport.🙁 They transferred me to a flight for the following morning and didn’t charge me a penny.

[ Actually turned out to be a good thing, I had enough problems finding my accommodation in broad daylight, finding it at night would have been impossible, Venice if you are asking. ]

EBearhug · 05/08/2025 12:53

For those confusing Iceland the shop with Iceland the country- we did pass an Iceland shop in Iceland.

DD said she saw one as we were driving but I thought she was mistaken, will apologise to her. I've never been to any supermarket naked, I hate seeing myself enough . We're going to the Secret Lagoon this week ( now I've got my cossie), but dreading the naked showering.

YMMV
Icelandair lost my pushchair on the outbound journey only to then lose the replacement I bought somehow during the return trip!
I was travelling with 3 children. FUN!

I'll never forgive them😡

Lol, no, I'm not going to resort to that! I just thought it was a great idea when travelling with others, that's all. Stop laughing at Horsie! 😢😂

I know it doesn't relate to the OP but how can you mix up your packing if you are a solo traveller?

This is what happened to me! Was on a business trip as well so no chance of cross packing cases. Mine eventually turned up 4 days later and I was in a place that didn’t cater for my sizing either.

They have 2 shops in all of Iceland 😁 I suspect they used the franchise name to lure the British tourists in.

Not much help but I always muddle the cases for this reason. So we'd all get a little bit of something should a case go missing. I would think you have a claim but you might have to go out and get a few bits and claim from the airline

We do this also. It’s something my mum always did also. I try to have change of undies/tshirt in hand luggage also.

They also keep suing Icelandic companies for using the word Iceland in their brand names 🙄

They've been told multiple times now that you can't actually trademark the name of a country.

Puffinshop · 05/08/2025 21:32

The best shop name in Iceland though is the opticians Eyesland.
