DH and DD's luggage arrived, but mine didn't. I bought new hiking boots, new swimsuits (never leave the house usually and this confirms I was right). Also contained all the toiletries, towels, some medication that's liquid so I didn't want to risk it, along with jewellery

I know "travel insurance" , but it doesn't help when you arrive in a cold country with nothing.

It was Easyjet and I wasn't the only one on the flight who had luggage missing - but they dont fly here for another 3-4 days, so not a lot of hope.

Isn't that packing 101 😂?

Pretty much. It's obvious.

TizerorFizz · 04/08/2025 20:02

@Horsie mixing up belongings in different cases surely cannot be news to you! I put pants, spare t shirts and a pair of socks and trousers in my hand luggage too. Be prepared!

nonumbersinthisname · 04/08/2025 20:04

The most recent time my luggage got delayed I was actually flying with cabin luggage only, but they said they’d run out of cabin space and did a complimentary check in instead. I was on the way home so it wasn’t as bad as if it was on the way out, and it did turn up a couple of days later. But still annoying because I’d deliberately chosen to go cabin only, due to some close connections in the journey.

My worse nightmare! Usually they give you money to buy clothes while waiting for your suitcase. At least then you can buy some boots and a swimming costume and a warm change of clothes. They normally give you a daily amount and you claim it back?

What is your other nightmare?

Hey @Anonymousemouses I hope by now you either have your bag back or at least enough items to cover you until you do.

I know this is no help now but for future ref (and anyone reading this thread) I always take these in carry-on (actually I very rarely check in luggage at all, but I guess if I were in Iceland for a week I would need to)

  • All meds – as others say, liquids above 100ml if needed are covered if prescribed – just take a screenshot of the scrip
  • Big boots if needed (wear them)
  • Coat (ditto)
  • All toiletries – mini sizes that I can finish; if bigger is needed eg suncream, buy in airport
  • Underwear for three days (as a PP my bras are not easily available)
  • Swimming costume if needed (as above, not easy to find one to fit)
  • Change of clothes x 2
  • PJs x 1
  • Flipflops
  • Jewellery – I mean if I owned valuable jewellery and was taking it on holiday (and why not) then I would certainly keep it close
  • Makeup
  • Contact lenses – sourcing these abroad would be a pain
  • Glasses (ditto)
  • Charger, cables, adaptors
  • Basic first aid – painkillers, plasters, anti-histamine, lip balm

All that fits easily into a very small backpack which even Ryanair will allow for free. British Airways lost my luggage for three days once so I sympathise.

Edited

Daughter going to Iceland in a few months, will pass this on.
Suchba PITA when luggage gets lost.
My friends son lost everything going to the US for the summer last year, never got it back, so annoying.

Letsgotosomewhereelse · 04/08/2025 20:29

Have you thought about muddling up outfits so everyone gets something if that happens again?

sorry - just wanted to join the chorus of people helpfully giving this advice which is currently useless to you

£75? that’s not even going to get a pair of boots ffs

Credit card and claim it back

JustMyView13 · 04/08/2025 20:34

Completely useless tip incoming…

I’m a big fan of air tags in luggage. At least it kills curiosity as to whether it’s stuck at home, lost in the system somewhere exotic, or at your destination airport. You can also track its movement as it catches up with you.

Livingthebestlife · 04/08/2025 20:53

Not sure if it's been mentioned but have you thought about mixing or muddling up the contents of your suitcases.

Sorry couldn't resist 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

Hopefully it turns up soon.

Mumwithbaggage · 04/08/2025 20:56

It looks like a rinse out your clothes at night job unfortunately. If you're off to the Blue Lagoon they sell some swimwear but at a cost! I know this because dh forgot to pack trunks.

It's a fabulous place - hope you get to enjoy some of it x

Zanatdy · 04/08/2025 20:58

Glad you’ve been able to rent some clothes OP as that’s one of the worse holidays to lose your luggage. When my son and I went, we did hang luggage only (when a small suitcase was classed as hand luggage and not just a rucksack. It was hard though and I was boiling at the airport as I was wearing a huge north face coat, thermals and several tops to save space.

Lesson learned for future is spreading luggage across 2-3 cases, so you all have 2-3 outfits. I’d be particularly upset about the swim wear as I find it hard to find a costume i’m happy with. Glad you’ve calmed down a little now. Reading your update it’s understanding when you reacted as you did. Might be worth buying a costume (are you going to Reykjavik anyway, as just do it earlier) and then make do with the hire clothes you have. It’s a great country, try and enjoy, and hope your case turns up asap.

Yes, I always put one in checked luggage. Useful tip for the future

Had to read that last sentence twice . Thought c'mon, they're designed to hold tits surely? 🙄

😂

RosyDaysAhead · 04/08/2025 21:35

Also the hold isn’t pressurised in the same way the cabins are and liquid medication may not stay at a constant temperature it could freeze/thaw in the hold rendering it useless

Agapornis · 04/08/2025 21:36

Fwiw if you have roughly the same size arse as your husband, men's boxers are pretty comfortable.

Gonners · 04/08/2025 21:39

An ex- and I lost our hold luggage (just one large suitcase between us) when the check-in desk mislabelled a case intended for Male (the Maldives) via Colombo (Sri Lanka). They'd sent it to Madras. It was no big deal at the time, as we had everything important in hand-baggage and could pick up what we needed in Colombo. It never arrived and we just got temporary compensation from the airline and claimed on the insurance when we got home.

This was around Christmas. In late February, the case was finally found in Madras and returned to us in London by cab. The driver said "Dunno what you've got in there mate, but it smells like a dead body. I've had to have to windows open all the way." This was when I learned that the ex- had packed a whole Stilton in there, as a gift to a friend of his at the US Embassy in Colombo. To be fair, I don't blame him for not mentioning that he'd done it. He was probably praying that it never turned up! We had to throw it straight into the far end of the garden and obviously the case and all the contents (including the Stilton!) were beyond resurrection.

UninterestedBeing12 · 04/08/2025 19:51

Honestly I want to come home. DH and I are at breaking point. I have been awake since 4am crying

Come on now. Breaking point and up from 4am crying over some lost clothes. If you can afford a holiday in one of the most expensive countries on earth than you are not doing at all badly. Breaking point is a bit strong.

Your luggage will turn up

Get yourself to the 66° North discount outlet shop in Reykjavik they do swimsuits and everything.

This. Sorry but get a grip.

Mountaintopp · 04/08/2025 21:40

Sounds a bit stressful, hope you're managing to enjoy the holiday a bit. Once went on a school trip to Iceland and none of the groups' luggage turned up. Was a nightmare tbh but the group still had a super time.

LOL - That's better than Three Men in a Boat 🤣

Very bracing.

I thought this was common knowledge in today's world but apparently it isn't. OP, if you paid for your flights with a visa or mastercard you will almost always have extre flight insurance automatically included which will pay you back for all kinds of expenses when your bags go missing , over and above what the airline pays you.

Contact your credit card company and open a claim. Purchase whatever you need. Keep all your receipts and send in your claim with copies of your receipts when you return home.

This. I always book flights on Mastercard. And Apple air tags.

MarieAndTwinette · 04/08/2025 22:06

From your title I honestly thought you were going to say that you had gone to Iceland for a food shop and realised that you’d forgotten to put your clothes on. 😂

IncessantNameChanger · 04/08/2025 22:15

My eldest ds was a pucker as a young child ( reflux) then ds3 was a wee-er ( ASD) so I'd always pack a spare set of clothes in my hand luggage. Pick your thinnest clothes and just roll them up at the bottom of of carry on. Not much use for Iceland as I guess that's all bulky. Cheap thin primark swimsuit folded up in your hand luggage is better than none. But I carry my hoody and whatever coat as hand luggage but just over my arm. My earplugs are always on me. always. I also took my Cpap on as hand luggage.

Android do air tag type tracker too. I agree it might give price of mind knowing where it is even if it didn't reunite you.

Try and enjoy your holiday. Your resilient. You had had some shit thrown at you in life but you got through it. You can get through this as well.

The hold is pressurised to exactly the same pressure as the cabins.

The temperature can vary.

There are a couple of thrift/vintage stores in Reykjavik, somewhere near the penis museum as I recall, but they're still pricey.

Definitely opt for mixed cases in future!

(Also for hard to replace items - I have ridiculous sized boobs so I've never trusted my bras to hold luggage)

Lol, I had to read the last sentence more than three times 😆

MrsScarecrow · 04/08/2025 22:22

Happened to us once and have always had mixed bags since. Also have at least a change of underwear in our carry on.
