DH and DD's luggage arrived, but mine didn't. I bought new hiking boots, new swimsuits (never leave the house usually and this confirms I was right). Also contained all the toiletries, towels, some medication that's liquid so I didn't want to risk it, along with jewellery

I know "travel insurance" , but it doesn't help when you arrive in a cold country with nothing.

It was Easyjet and I wasn't the only one on the flight who had luggage missing - but they dont fly here for another 3-4 days, so not a lot of hope.

This. Sorry but get a grip.

I mean do rather agree.

A friend of mine is just coming back from a fortnight’s holiday to Thailand where she had mumps really badly - for the whole holiday. Literally the worst holiday she’s ever had.

Sometimes shit things happen but crying at 4am simply makes things worse.

MadisonAvenue · 04/08/2025 22:32

Really hope you’re soon reunited with your luggage OP, it all sounds very stressful for you. People deal with things differently, it’s understandable why you’re so upset about it.

I’ve never before heard of places which specifically rent clothes to people whose bags haven’t made it to the destination, I wonder why Iceland is so problematic that this is necessary?

TizerorFizz · 04/08/2025 20:02

@Horsie mixing up belongings in different cases surely cannot be news to you! I put pants, spare t shirts and a pair of socks and trousers in my hand luggage too. Be prepared!

Oh, well I don't have a family or partner so always travel alone! It's just my one case. Am v impressed with this piece of parental genius!

Horsie · 04/08/2025 22:37

UninterestedBeing12 · 04/08/2025 20:01

Pretty much. It's obvious.

It's not obvious if you don't have a partner or family and always travel alone. I've never heard of doing this, but it makes so much sense! I will keep my impressment to myself in case I get laughed at more! Poor Horsie. 😢

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/08/2025 13:12

Yikes. £75 won’t go far in Iceland. Hoping you can share toiletries etc with your family.

There’s a decent-sized branch of H&M in Reykjavik & the prices are similar to the UK.

Horsie · 04/08/2025 22:41

cyvguhb · 04/08/2025 19:57

Isn't that packing 101 😂?

Not if you've only ever travelled alone with one suitcase!

Sorry poor Horsie.

Not laughing at you 😥

I don’t think you are allowed to put air tags in luggage- risk of lithium batteries overheating and catching fire.
edit- just goggled and the above is untrue

NannyOggsScones · 04/08/2025 23:06

Oh OP you will now join us group of travellers that split their luggage and always carry meds and jewellery in their hand luggage - welcome. I joined this group after losing all my luggage in Hong Kong en route to the UK. I am a size 16 and suffered the humiliation of going to M&S whereupon the tiny Chinese woman in the lingerie dept took one look at me and said "we don't do that size". I spent the whole time in the clothes I arrived in and my husband's t shirts. Air NZ were shit and my luggage finally arrived 7 days later having been to America. Enjoy Iceland - it's a wonderful place.

123fee · 04/08/2025 23:08

I’ve traveled all over the world the only time I’ve been missing a suitcase was there, ironically both ways!!!

flightoftheconkers · 04/08/2025 23:16

Well, I'm absolutely amazed in all my years of travelling that this has never happened to me. Or, that I never put a change of clothes in my carry on or mix my luggage with my DP's. I didn't know you could rent clothes in Iceland either. I am on it now. I have been playing luggage roulette for years and getting away with it clearly.

DBro put airtags in all his boxes and bags when he moved back from 5yrs in Australia. The only bag that went missing (once it had landed at Southampton docks) was the one containing all his work clothes. Despite being able to track his bag and tell the shipping company where it waS, it still took several months to get it back to him.

GinnyW · 04/08/2025 23:23

I arrived in Iceland yesterday too. Different airline. I knew it was expensive here but am still shocked by the prices after going into a few shops. Sorry, I have no suggestions but am sending lots of sympathy. Try to enjoy the amazing scenery if you can.

Whataretalkingabout · 03/08/2025 16:39

Well I couldn't possibly answer that question ; I don't work for a credit card company.

But I have had multiple experiences with this happening and of having been reimbursed for lost baggage several times, a canceled flight (being "stuck" in Rome for an extra week after the Icelandic volcano erruption and credited by my card for hotel and food for an entire week!) and other incidents. Probably a premium card but worth it.
Check with your UK bank. Visa / Mastercard are international companies; I cannot see how this couldn't apply for you.

It’s to do with the kind of account you have and the bank. I have private banking and this includes quite extensive travel insurance if I use my bank-issued credit card. Completely paid for itself for about a decade when I suffered a serious injury and had to go for emergency surgery and three days in hospital on a trip once. Plus different flights home and so on.

But yes, I pay for my bank accounts.

I am genuinely surprised that so many people on this thread don’t take some of the stuff they need in their carry-on. I mean even Ryanair let you take a small rucksack – doesn't everyone take a change of clothes, some undies, meds, makeup, toiletries? If not what do you all put in your carry-on? I’m not having a go, I am honestly interested. Or do you just have a tiny bag with passport and phone?

Not only that, I wear the hiking boots so they don't take up valuable luggage space. I also keep the waterproof and windproof hiking jacket in my hand luggage because you're going to want to put that on as soon as you land in iceland where it is never especially warm. Along with a hat and gloves.

I just don't understand not even keeping a spare pair of knickers or your essential kit for a holiday like that with you in the cabin

An ex- and I lost our hold luggage (just one large suitcase between us) when the check-in desk mislabelled a case intended for Male (the Maldives) via Colombo (Sri Lanka). They'd sent it to Madras. It was no big deal at the time, as we had everything important in hand-baggage and could pick up what we needed in Colombo. It never arrived and we just got temporary compensation from the airline and claimed on the insurance when we got home.

This was around Christmas. In late February, the case was finally found in Madras and returned to us in London by cab. The driver said "Dunno what you've got in there mate, but it smells like a dead body. I've had to have to windows open all the way." This was when I learned that the ex- had packed a whole Stilton in there, as a gift to a friend of his at the US Embassy in Colombo. To be fair, I don't blame him for not mentioning that he'd done it. He was probably praying that it never turned up! We had to throw it straight into the far end of the garden and obviously the case and all the contents (including the Stilton!) were beyond resurrection.

Edited

I am so sorry, but this made me laugh! I always knew Stilton is the devils food and your story confirms it. Poor cab driver. 🙂

Mumof1andacat · 03/08/2025 12:59

Not much help but I always muddle the cases for this reason. So we'd all get a little bit of something should a case go missing. I would think you have a claim but you might have to go out and get a few bits and claim from the airline

My neighbour recently told me that they do this, brilliant idea, I’ll be doing the same.

Itstwelveoclocksomewhere · 05/08/2025 00:33

Just for those suggesting using an airtag. I know someone who did this and could see exactly where their bag was in the airport and the staff refused to retrieve the bag.

OP I hope your luggage turns up. Mine went missing before but luckily it was on my return flight. They delivered it to my house the following day or two.
I don't know if that is possible if you are on a driving holiday though.

The clothes rental idea sounds bizarre and I would be very upset not to have my own clothes with me.

I hope your suitcase turns up asap.

Off topic but are the houses in the photos posted typical houses ie family homes? They look small and bleak. Is the slanted roof so snow won't cause the middle of the roof to collapse?

How much are things in the shops?

I remember a friend going 20 years ago and she told me she stayed in every evening because it was so dark and expensive to eat out anywhere.

CutiePatootee · 05/08/2025 00:36

Am I going daft??

First thought was “why do I need to change clothes to go to Iceland.. they're a food warehouse!
Second thought was “penis museum???” Did I read that right?
Third thought.. What have boobs got to do with Iceland??

it’s late and I should be asleep😆

I'd never dream of bringing clothing in my handbag. I carry my glasses, a book, phone, chargers, powerbank, some jewellery, passports, retainer (worried in would break in the hold), sweets, tissues, wallet., a sweatshirt in case the plane is cold.

Having seen what a pp said about H and M and having been to Reykavic myself I googled. Everything including Next!!

Iceland is a wonderful place to buy clothes. Treat is as an opportunity to update your wardrobe.

SabrinaThwaite · 05/08/2025 01:58

Someone was incensed enough by Vueling losing their luggage, they’ve put together a list of the airlines / countries / airports most likely to lose your hold bags.

https://luggagelosers.com/

I guess there’s a good reason for flying hand luggage only on Vueling.

I had a succession of images, and yes, some involved enormous bras piled high with luggage, presumably strapped to the poster in lieu of a rucksack.

The lurid images were made worse by having just read in the same post about the Penis Museum.

Recall watching a show about Iceland and its penis museum... think it might have been the one Alexander Armstrong presented about 3 years back. What a fascinating place. I'd love to go.

Try and make the absolute most of it OP.
