DH and DD's luggage arrived, but mine didn't. I bought new hiking boots, new swimsuits (never leave the house usually and this confirms I was right). Also contained all the toiletries, towels, some medication that's liquid so I didn't want to risk it, along with jewellery

I know "travel insurance" , but it doesn't help when you arrive in a cold country with nothing.

It was Easyjet and I wasn't the only one on the flight who had luggage missing - but they dont fly here for another 3-4 days, so not a lot of hope.

Not much help but I always muddle the cases for this reason. So we'd all get a little bit of something should a case go missing. I would think you have a claim but you might have to go out and get a few bits and claim from the airline

teksquad · 03/08/2025 13:00

My worse nightmare! Usually they give you money to buy clothes while waiting for your suitcase. At least then you can buy some boots and a swimming costume and a warm change of clothes. They normally give you a daily amount and you claim it back?

Anonymousemouses · 03/08/2025 13:02

You can claim £25 per day for a maximum of three days (so £75), which you have to keep receipts. Not great for 7 days though.

Couldn't easyJet stick the luggage on a flight with a different carrier?

Is that from easyJet though? Maybe your travel insurance would give you a greater amount?
I'm so sorry, hope you still have a good time.

YANBU.

Buy I generally take at least pne outfit change in the cabin luggage for each of us. And also put the swim costumes in the cabin luggage.

So at least we have a change of clothes. Usually assume would have our luggage after a day or so. As it's a popular destination.

But you should be able to claim back your expenses.

Also a good idea as above to muddle the Suitcases.

Such a good idea. I'll start doing that too

Nightmare. This doesn’t help you now but I always pack at least 2 changes of clothes in my hand luggage (always take a backpack) now. And also do as another poster said and mix up the cases.

this happened to me years ago in Rome.

Wolfpa · 03/08/2025 13:11

Have you asked Easy jet about putting your bags on a flight with a different airline? I trace lost bags as part of my job and it is really common.

your travel insurance normally gives a much higher allowance than the airlines themselves so you may be better off looking up their limits.

Caspianberg · 03/08/2025 13:12

That’s just easyJet refund for luggage delay.
what does your actual travel insurance say?
I think mine it’s €300 per person per 24hrs. I always wish they loose mine for 48hrs for this reason.

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/08/2025 13:12

Yikes. £75 won’t go far in Iceland. Hoping you can share toiletries etc with your family.

BeatriceAndBeau · 03/08/2025 13:14

Never put medication in your hold luggage! It is exempt from the liquids rule and needs to be kept on you in your hand luggage for reasons that you’ve just discovered

HelenHywater · 03/08/2025 13:20

We had all our luggage lost on an Easyjet flight (me and my children) and I had to buy a lot of clothes and toiletries. My children enjoyed spending their £75! (It was a substantially cheaper place than Iceland, mind).

My travel insurance covered everything that Easyjet didn't. (We flew on the Saturday and our luggage arrived on the Tuesday).

cheezncrackers · 03/08/2025 13:22

Easyjet should put your bags on the next flight out to Iceland, even if it's with another carrier. Call their lost luggage helpline and ask them what their policy is and when you can expect your luggage. You're never going to be able to replace an entire suitcase's worth of clothes and toilettries for £75 and Iceland is expensive.

Newmeagain · 03/08/2025 13:24

The rules around this for airlines need to be updated, as they don’t reflect the fact not having your luggage can ruin your holiday.

i had this happen - BA left my suitcase behind in the U.K. Luckily I was in a hot country because it took BA 5 days to get my suitcase to me as they claimed there was no spare capacity on any of their multiple flights coming to my destination.

OP - I would buy one outfit and claim on your insurance.

Slalom99 · 03/08/2025 13:28

I had this happen when we went to the Faroes Islands recently. DH and I only packed one case between us so we were left with literally just the clothes we were standing in.

We were stopping in a very remote private rental. It was pretty much a converted barn in the mountains well off the beaten track.

The airline assured us they’d get the bag to us by 10am the next morning as they could put it on a flight via Denmark. I was far from hopeful so was astounded when there was a knock on the door at breakfast time and the bag was handed over.

Miracles do happen!

Fromage · 03/08/2025 13:42

Firstly, I thought this was a 'naked in the supermarket' nightmare, but now I'm not sure if this is worse.

Can you have a good shuffle through dh's (and dd's?) luggage for clothes with which you can make do? Is there anyone there who can help with your medication, at the hotel, maybe?

TroysMammy · 03/08/2025 13:45

£25 a day! Considering Iceland is expensive you might just be able to buy 2 pairs of knickers and a shoelace. They need to compensate you for more than that.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 03/08/2025 13:52

There are a couple of thrift/vintage stores in Reykjavik, somewhere near the penis museum as I recall, but they're still pricey.

Definitely opt for mixed cases in future!

(Also for hard to replace items - I have ridiculous sized boobs so I've never trusted my bras to hold luggage)

Whataretalkingabout · 03/08/2025 13:52

I thought this was common knowledge in today's world but apparently it isn't. OP, if you paid for your flights with a visa or mastercard you will almost always have extre flight insurance automatically included which will pay you back for all kinds of expenses when your bags go missing , over and above what the airline pays you.

Contact your credit card company and open a claim. Purchase whatever you need. Keep all your receipts and send in your claim with copies of your receipts when you return home.

Rocknrollstar · 03/08/2025 13:53

We always swap some clothes in suitcases when we pack. Ring your insurance and they will tell you how much you can spend. If you need warm boots tell them that too.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 03/08/2025 14:05

That's why I mix cases! Always each.pack one outfit into hand luggage too.

Hopefully it's at the airport and the company you travelled with will be informed.

My airline once lost my suitcase on a flight back from Roma.

It was great I didn't have to lug a huge suitcase all the way home on 2 different buses.

And it was delivered to my house free of charge a couple of days later.

Had to read that last sentence twice . Thought c'mon, they're designed to hold tits surely? 🙄
