DH and DD's luggage arrived, but mine didn't. I bought new hiking boots, new swimsuits (never leave the house usually and this confirms I was right). Also contained all the toiletries, towels, some medication that's liquid so I didn't want to risk it, along with jewellery

I know "travel insurance" , but it doesn't help when you arrive in a cold country with nothing.

It was Easyjet and I wasn't the only one on the flight who had luggage missing - but they dont fly here for another 3-4 days, so not a lot of hope.

Happened to me years ago, though fortunately in sunny Italy not Iceland! I claimed on my travel insurance and I think I got £200. Eventually my luggage arrived too. Give your travel insurance a go OP, sooner rather than later.

Does this apply to UK credit cards? The terms and conditions and listed benefits of my Natwest credit card don't mention anything about lost baggage insurance. It does have section 75 protection which could be used if the flight is cancelled.

Well I couldn't possibly answer that question ; I don't work for a credit card company.

But I have had multiple experiences with this happening and of having been reimbursed for lost baggage several times, a canceled flight (being "stuck" in Rome for an extra week after the Icelandic volcano erruption and credited by my card for hotel and food for an entire week!) and other incidents. Probably a premium card but worth it.
Check with your UK bank. Visa / Mastercard are international companies; I cannot see how this couldn't apply for you.

After BA lost my bag and 2 days later delivered someone else’s bag to me, I always travel with a spare set and a swimsuit in hand luggage if my main bag goes on the hold. Fortunately the hotel tracked down my bag for me - BA were hopeless.

Unlikely for bog standard UK cards. Some of the ones you pay a fee for might offer that sort of thing.

Travel insurance usually only comes with the premium credit cards that charge an annual fee. Some bank accounts will give you travel insurance, again ones that charge a (monthly) fee.

Jennyathemall · 03/08/2025 16:46

They have shops in Iceland.

Zempy · 03/08/2025 16:51

You didn’t “cross pack” ???

Just buy what you need and claim it back on insurance.

It's hard enough buying j/k cups in the UK, let alone finding them in foreign sizes (some countries use different letter systems) - usually online ordering - much harder to find a specific store. You can't just nip in anywhere, and in a shop you're usually taking £35 plus minimum.

I can't just nip into an H&M and pick up a 2 pack of 34Ds for £20.

The pp meant at first glance it reads as though you were using your bras to hold your luggage rather than putting them in your hold luggage 😊

mamagogo1 · 03/08/2025 16:58

@Whataretalkingabout

not true of standard cards in the U.K. some offer it as a perk but far from universal. Our bank account as travel insurance included bit we at £10 a month for the account, it’s not free really!

clary · 03/08/2025 17:01

Hey @Anonymousemouses I hope by now you either have your bag back or at least enough items to cover you until you do.

I know this is no help now but for future ref (and anyone reading this thread) I always take these in carry-on (actually I very rarely check in luggage at all, but I guess if I were in Iceland for a week I would need to)

  • All meds – as others say, liquids above 100ml if needed are covered if prescribed – just take a screenshot of the scrip
  • Big boots if needed (wear them)
  • Coat (ditto)
  • All toiletries – mini sizes that I can finish; if bigger is needed eg suncream, buy in airport
  • Underwear for three days (as a PP my bras are not easily available)
  • Swimming costume if needed (as above, not easy to find one to fit)
  • Change of clothes x 2
  • PJs x 1
  • Flipflops
  • Jewellery – I mean if I owned valuable jewellery and was taking it on holiday (and why not) then I would certainly keep it close
  • Makeup
  • Contact lenses – sourcing these abroad would be a pain
  • Glasses (ditto)
  • Charger, cables, adaptors
  • Basic first aid – painkillers, plasters, anti-histamine, lip balm

All that fits easily into a very small backpack which even Ryanair will allow for free. British Airways lost my luggage for three days once so I sympathise.

HopefulHayley · 03/08/2025 17:05

Sorry to hear that this has happened to you. If it's any help, I spent a period of time in Iceland and if you are going to Reykjavik first there are some thrift stores there, and I also found H&M and Sports Direct to be relatively inexpensive (for Iceland!).
I hope this doesn't put too much of a dampener on your visit to Iceland.

I never said it was free. Nothing, in fact is free.
My comment was just a suggestion of where to possibly find help.

@TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis

That is such a great sentence. So easy to visually imagine a very large bra as a receptacle for your holiday goods and the reaction of the other passengers

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 03/08/2025 13:52

There are a couple of thrift/vintage stores in Reykjavik, somewhere near the penis museum as I recall, but they're still pricey.

Definitely opt for mixed cases in future!

(Also for hard to replace items - I have ridiculous sized boobs so I've never trusted my bras to hold luggage)

Off topic, but am I the only one stunned to find out that there is such a thing as a penis museum?

I thought the penis museum in Reykjavik was fairly common knowledge? There’s one in Copenhagen too, or at least there used to be (haven’t been over to Denmark for a while). There used to be a vagina museum in London but it closed a couple of years ago. Maybe it got the ick.😝

I can't even...

DD went to Iceland with school but she didn't mention it Grin

No - not a typo. I looked up on wikipedia.

Isobel201 · 03/08/2025 17:30

I think if it was only 7 days I would have squeezed some clothes into hand luggage sized suitcase and worn the hiking boots on the plane.

TizerorFizz · 03/08/2025 17:31

We went to Iceland in July and left uk in 30 degrees. No I didn’t wear a big coat! Our travel insurance does come with our bank account but it’s premium banking. Many bank accounts and credit cards won’t have it. I’d try and find out what EJ are doing but frankly, I’d not use them unless forced to!

Finteq · 03/08/2025 13:05

YANBU.

Buy I generally take at least pne outfit change in the cabin luggage for each of us. And also put the swim costumes in the cabin luggage.

So at least we have a change of clothes. Usually assume would have our luggage after a day or so. As it's a popular destination.

But you should be able to claim back your expenses.

Also a good idea as above to muddle the Suitcases.

I always do the same as it’s my worst nightmare.
Mix up cases and also change of outfit in hand luggage.
Must be awful for the op though.

Jaxhog · 03/08/2025 17:38

I feel your pain! We arrived in Beijing (China) with no luggage - as did most of the other passengers. Thank you BA. We got our luggage back 4 days later, the day we were due to fly on to Xian. We cleaned out the hotel shop of underwear and T shirts. My DH got a local shop to make him a pair of trousers, which they did in 4 hours (it was China!). We did claim our spending back from BA and our travel insurance, but only when we got back. Keep your receipts.

After this experience, I now max out my hand luggage with a change of clothes, extra knickers and a small bottle of travel wash.

TizerorFizz · 03/08/2025 17:46

@Jaxhog Of course, to be fair, BA don’t take your luggage to the plane. It’s airport staff. Nor Easy Jet for that matter. Also some airlines fly often to cities - eg every day or twice a day. They can easily find alternative flights. They code share with China Southern.
