DH and DD's luggage arrived, but mine didn't. I bought new hiking boots, new swimsuits (never leave the house usually and this confirms I was right). Also contained all the toiletries, towels, some medication that's liquid so I didn't want to risk it, along with jewellery

I know "travel insurance" , but it doesn't help when you arrive in a cold country with nothing.

It was Easyjet and I wasn't the only one on the flight who had luggage missing - but they dont fly here for another 3-4 days, so not a lot of hope.

@Jaxhog Of course, to be fair, BA don’t take your luggage to the plane. It’s airport staff. Nor Easy Jet for that matter. Also some airlines fly often to cities - eg every day or twice a day. They can easily find alternative flights. They code share with China Southern.

In our case BA told us they 'chose' to fly without our luggage, as they thought we'd rather arrive on time than wait for it. I'd like to have had the choice. It was only thanks to our tour company leaning on them hard, that we eventually got our luggage in the place we actually were. Any later and we would have left for our next pre-booked destination.

TizerorFizz · 03/08/2025 17:53

How do they choose to fly without luggage loaded? Utterly bizarre. It must have been delivered to the wrong plane and it wasn’t retrievable. They do not leave it on the tarmac. It’s still a ground handling issue and the plane needing to leave in its slot.

Judiezones · 03/08/2025 17:55

OP there's at least one Red Cross charity shop on the main shopping street in Reykjavik, you might be able to get some stuff there much cheaper than new. Try Bonus supermarket for toiletries.

CyberStrider · 03/08/2025 17:55

In my case they told me they hadn't loaded my suitcase without any explanation as to why, but not before I'd waited an hour watching bags go round at the baggage carousel.

TizerorFizz · 03/08/2025 18:04

@CyberStriderThe ground handlers didn’t get it to the correct plane. That’s the usual problem. It didn’t go on the correct route to the plane and ended up “lost”. Not the fault of the pilot though. Get an Apple tracker?

CyberStrider · 03/08/2025 18:20

@TizerorFizz

Did I say it was the fault of the pilot?

I just think as they know they hadn't loaded it, it wouldn't be impossible to put an announcement for me to go to the desk rather than let me wait until every bit of luggage had come out (and on an a380 you can wait a while) then queue up at lost luggage. And then after giving you a special login to their lost luggage tracking system they actually updated it, not just deliver it to the hotel without notifying me or updating.

An air tag would be a waste of time as I don't have an iphone

Well I couldn't possibly answer that question ; I don't work for a credit card company.

But I have had multiple experiences with this happening and of having been reimbursed for lost baggage several times, a canceled flight (being "stuck" in Rome for an extra week after the Icelandic volcano erruption and credited by my card for hotel and food for an entire week!) and other incidents. Probably a premium card but worth it.
Check with your UK bank. Visa / Mastercard are international companies; I cannot see how this couldn't apply for you.

I wasn't sure if your experience of this was with UK credit cards, or ones from elsewhere hence the question. I assume yours isn't a UK credit card then? As the T&Cs and any listed benefits of mine don't mention anything about any sort I'd insurance, it seems unlikely there is any (unless for some reason they've decided not to bother telling anyone). Presumably the bank decides what benefits they offer. I will ask them though.

Whataretalkingabout · 03/08/2025 17:05

I never said it was free. Nothing, in fact is free.
My comment was just a suggestion of where to possibly find help.

This bit of your post suggested it is pretty much universal, and not a paid extra "you will almost always have extre flight insurance automatically included".

Thank you to everyone else who has confirmed it's not a thing for a bog standard UK credit card.

TizerorFizz · 03/08/2025 18:52

@CyberStrider Well everyone keeps saying it’s the fault of this or that airline. It’s the fault of the ground handlers.

Had to read that last sentence twice . Thought c'mon, they're designed to hold tits surely? 🙄

I read it that way too 🤣

I think if it was only 7 days I would have squeezed some clothes into hand luggage sized suitcase and worn the hiking boots on the plane.

I should have, never happened before and didn't think it would. Lesson learned.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/08/2025 19:28

I always wear my hiking boots on the plane if it's that sort of holiday as they're the heaviest thing.

@Anonymousemouses rereading my post it sounds as tho I am giving you a lecture for not doing what I do. Apologies as of course that was not my intention. More some thoughts for the future for you and anyone else.

I (even I!) think it would be tough to go to Iceland with just carry-on, having seen what DD took for just five days. I really hope you get your luggage back soon. Have you managed to source the meds?

Hoping you are still able to enjoy the trip as well. DD loved it so much she wanted (wants) to go and live there!

I can't even...

DD went to Iceland with school but she didn't mention it Grin

That's the reason we came- DD. Her school went in May half-term for geography. We found out it would cost a bit more for us all. Should have let her go with the other girls!

I dont feel lectured honestly. Glad your DD loved it. It wasn't May she went was it?

The jewellery i brought was sentimental rather than valuable, I use a walking aid so getting all metal things out at security, bslancing on a crutch stresses me out.

clary · 03/08/2025 19:34

No not May :) she went in sixth form so six years ago now! but ask her and she still says aaaaah yes I want to live there.

JulietSierra · 03/08/2025 19:35

Op I’m so sorry, what a rotten start to your holiday. I’m always an anxious mess at the baggage carousel and don’t breathe until all our cases are back in our possession!

What are you going to do about your medication? Really hope you manage to get sorted.

Anonymousemouses · 03/08/2025 19:38

I'm now wondering whether the fault lies with EasyJet or the airport.

The rental shop was crowded and was making appointments. They weren't all EasyJet and it seemed to be a few different ones from various airlines.

It was also strange how they said that all bags were on the belt, which wasnt huge, whereas at Luton/Naples/zportugal, etc, they seem to keep adding more. Maybe I'm overthinking, but the amount of missing bags seems very large, and I've read other places where the bag was found in this airport.

Well I am truly sorry that you feel I misled you. I was only relaying my own experience.

If you woukd like 100% accurate information maybe Mumsnet is not the most reliable source. May I reiterate, contact your bank for the most accurate and up-to-date information. HTH

TizerorFizz · 04/08/2025 00:45

Most people know if they’ve got travel insurance with their bank account without contacting anyone. It’s clear in bank web sites if you qualify.

functionoverform · 04/08/2025 01:27

Op - look up the Montreal convention. It covers you for upto 1300 pounds for delayed baggage/ clothes. They are speaking pish. You may have to take it to arbitration to claim for your reasonable clothing expenses but the £25 a day is taking the piss. They are not informing you if your statutory rights.

Anything more than £1300 ISH pounds you use travel insurance.

Off topic, but am I the only one stunned to find out that there is such a thing as a penis museum?

I thought it was common knowledge, too.

It's mostly interesting from a zoological point of view, as it's got jars of preserved penises of every mammal on Iceland (including human.) It's not like the sex museum in Amsterdam.

I was without luggage for a couple if days in Australia. I still have the clothes I bought there. I was glad I had the foresight not to put my meds in hold luggage, though.

avignon1234 · 04/08/2025 02:27

Hope you have been re-united with luggage or suitably compensated, and I don't think you have been unreasonable with your packing (although I guess you should always have meds on you) Went to Iceland in June, and although we had lovely weather, and no trouble with Easyjet from EDI-KEF, I will say that that it is one of the more unusual and expensive countries I have been to (and I have been to 60+), and can completely understand how the shopping experience might not have quite been as "most would expect it", especially if you were not planning to go to Reykjavik which is a long way from the airport (for reference, even the cheapest "local" bus takes 90 mins and is about £25). Even when you get there. the shops are a bit odd, good quality, but very expensive, I can completely understand where you are coming from. xx

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 04/08/2025 02:39

I'm intrigued by the idea of the rental clothes. Are they nice, do you feel comfortable wearing them or are they very different to what you would choose for yourself?

I had a large suitcase go missing for 4 months. It turned up in a completely different country to the ones I'd been through, still wearing both the airline tag and mine with my name and contact info.

Definitely doesn’t apply to the credit card company I work for in the uk. Would be great if it did though
