If you were buying a kitchen today, what colour would you go for?

Roughly… I can’t decide. I like neutrals, but don’t want to be boring. Have seen some lovely colours, but don’t want it to date quickly…

I'm specifically looking at ikea kitchens.

Currently have a shaker kitchen in a very similar green to this. It’s over 20 years old. I think green kitchens are quite “in” now but they weren’t then. I don’t like being in fashion 😂🙈

Just had a yellow and green kitchen fitted - love it!

We went very light (it's called porcelain) but added colour with accessories and warmth with wood floor & stools. I worried a colour would date, but this can be updated easily.

IKEA do really good kitchens but their colour range is very limited. I'd look at one of the companies that do custom doors for IKEA kitchens and choose a colour you love. When we redo our utility room then I'll use IKEA with Plykea kitchen doors. If you choose a colour you love then it won't date, I have furniture in my house I have had for years that I still love (in one particular case I have a chaise longue that belonged to my grandmother that as a child I said I wanted and I still adore it). But if you fall out of love with a colour you can always paint kitchen units, you just need the correct primer.

Something similar to this colour.

This is a very similar colour to my new kitchen, just a very different style and my worktops are whiter. Glad someone else likes the colour!

Plastictreees · 02/08/2025 10:58

It’s interesting many people saying how white/cream units won’t look dated. We ripped ours out exactly because they looked dated! It could have been the style too though not just the colour per se.

So many gorgeous kitchens in the pics. I love looking at them, and there is none that I outright dislike. Just goes to show - you go with what you feel is right for you, suits your lifestyle, and works!

I wouldn’t start from the colour, I would start with the style. Do you want cottage? Urban? Quirky? Technocrat? Plutocrat (Neutral for re sale?) Then add in the age and character of your house , and go from there. For example, we had a house by a river, you could see it from the kitchen. So we decorated it to fit its environment, it had ‘driftwood’ doors, a sort of sand/ cement worktop (Formica), pale blue and green tiles and wavy handles. The floor was already sandy marble, so that fitted. It felt right.

Some of the nicest pictures on this thread seem to be where the colour has followed the environment and the style.

Good point!

I definitely want modern. I've had traditional (in my last house and in this one).

The house isn't that old and the traditional kitchen here (which is falling to bits) looks totally out of place.

I have clean, unfussy lines everywhere. Light and airy. I don't plan to sell this house, so it doesn't have to be neutral to sell.

If you want light and airy I'd go with IKEA carcasses and get light birch doors made by one of the companies that do upgraded doors - the article I posted above lists 7 at different price points but this option shouldn't add more than £2k to the cost of the kitchen - and that excludes the reduction in cost of not buying the IKEA doors. Then paint the walls in whatever light and airy colour you like.

There are some gorgeous kitchens on this thread!

Go with what you love, don’t worry about it dating! I had a petrol blue gloss kitchen put in 8 years ago! Not on trend in any way now but I still love it!

KingCatMeowInSpace · 11/10/2025 23:18

@ImogenBrocklehurst gorgeous!!! Is it a nightmare to clean? Show every mark? What unit and n
colour is it? Love it!

Snippit · 11/10/2025 23:34

i painted my daughters kitchen doors a porcelain colour, the worktop is wooden, white tiles and the walls are in Dulux Gentle Fawn, it looks lovely and fresh.

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 11/10/2025 23:52

I'm still undecided & this thread isn't helping! 🤣

It’s from Wickes, it’s charcoal, and test it shows every bloody drip and finger mark! It does clean up easily though (method multi surface cleaner and Smol sponges) and I’d still choose it 😍
