If you were buying a kitchen today, what colour would you go for?

Roughly… I can’t decide. I like neutrals, but don’t want to be boring. Have seen some lovely colours, but don’t want it to date quickly…

I'm specifically looking at ikea kitchens.

Watching with great interest as am of right now to a kitchen shop to get ideas. Mine will be a small ‘strip’ of wall in an open plan space so am agonising over the colour.

Similar. We have an L shaped kitchen that's open to the dining room - sort of kitchen diner, but more separate.

You can see the kitchen from the living room when the doors are open, so I want the colour to fit in with everything.

I also want to be able to change colour schemes mate, which I think will be easier if the kitchen is a more neutral colour.

this is ours…just completed…still need to finish a few bits and paint the walls

not the best picture but it’s a cashmere colour.

Cream has always been my favourite. If not, then white or beige.

Me too. Cream, and a classic Shaker style. It will never date.

MrsPositivity1 · 31/07/2025 18:25

Dark green for me with oak interiors and an oak island (just finished 😂)

Jimmychoo69 · 31/07/2025 19:15

Currently in the process of buying a new kitchen. At the moment I am thinking of having porcelain units with a sage green island. I really want to lighten the kitchen so keeping it neutral but thought having a different colour island would add a contrast.

A tip I have for you is to go into the second hand section of your IKEA if you have one and see if you can buy a couple of the doors people have returned. It's a cheap way to look at the colours in the light of your actual kitchen and see if you like them.

I wanted black on the bottom and blue on the top, but we went for black on the bottom and white on the top in the end because the blue wasn't in stock and had to be ordered specially. It's OK, but it really needs the walls to be painted to make it less contrasty and DH is now dragging his heels on that part 🙄

MrBallenIsaFittie · 31/07/2025 19:42

My favourite kitchen was a clotted cream for the top units with a very pale sage green for the bottom units. I managed to find some porcelain tiles in both colours and a white Belfast style sink. It was beautiful.

I'd go for a wood finish to prevent it dating. I like the coloured kitchens that are around now, but I wouldn't have one as it's going to look so mid 2020s in a few years and wood is more classic

I’m not sure whether ikea do real wood doors (maybe they do painted ones). IKEA is within my budget…

Wood can definitely date too…pine in the 70’s, oak in late 80’s/early 90’s

2010 saw a resurgence of oak and also walnut…

mogtheexcellent · 31/07/2025 20:59

Wood. Always wood. Husband is a farmer and anything else just shows the dirt. Sister just had a lovely navy kitchen fitted and all I can see are greasy hand marks everywhere.

ShowOfHands · 31/07/2025 21:05

My kitchen is navy with yellow (papaya) walls and I love it but I do like colour.

Friends have a deep green IKEA kitchen and it's really lovely.

I'd say anything but bloody grey. It's the colour of misery.

Ineffable23 · 31/07/2025 21:05

I would go cream but that's not an option on your poll.

White maybe if it's a modern house.

LoveMyLifeAlways · 30/07/2025 15:42

I have a sage green on the walls that I love.

We’ve got a sage green kitchen (copied from SIL and BIL) that we really love and that visitors always comment on (nicely 😂).

autienotnaughty · 31/07/2025 21:11

Not white that’s for definite (guess what colour I chose)

MalcolmMoo · 31/07/2025 21:14

I’m surprised white is so popular! I went for blue on your poll but I think I’d actually go for a sage green but also really like the forest green with brass handles. But I’d definitely choose a colour, we’re getting a new kitchen next year :)

ladygindiva · 31/07/2025 21:15

I voted black but I'd actually go for a deep muddy green colour, saw one recently and fell in love with it. I like dark moody decor though

Wolfpinkola · 31/07/2025 21:16

I would buy solid wood and buy second hand off Facebook. You will save yourself thousands and it’ll last much longer.

InSpainTheRain · 31/07/2025 21:49

Our new kitchen is navy. I am in love with it!!

PricklyLikeCactus · 31/07/2025 21:49

Solid dark wood, without a doubt. The navy matt kitchens look very five years ago, although I suppose they can be repainted.

Mmmkaay · 31/07/2025 21:55

If I could order a kitchen today I'd go for bone/greige cabinets and white corian tops. And I have VERY good taste 🤣

I like green. DIL has hand painted green with copper handles. Dark grey flagstones. It's a very light kitchen.

Other DIL has hand painted, some white shade. Porcelain tiled floor in a north facing kitchen that's lovely too.

We have cream, shiny finish. No scrubbing dog hairs out of shaker style grooves these days.
