It feels like autumn

Well it's typical isn't it.... glorious sunshine and heat during term time. As soon as my dc broke up for school last week, the weather has been rubbish. Today feels particularly awful though, so grey, drizzly...very autumnal feeling. It's so miserable. Anyone else feeling the same?

It’s been lovely where I am, in Scotland so kids broke up ages ago and have had nice summer weather for much of the holidays for a change. Is it due to brighten up where you are? I’ve often thought English schools break up too late to be in step with the nicer weather.

I agree...I find June and early July have the nicest weather but they are stuck in school...it really does feel that every summer once they've finally broken up the weather turns.

Not too bad here today (Cambridgeshire) but it felt distinctly autumnal early in morning about a week or so ago. Am hoping for a few more weeks of sun & warmth at least.

socks1107 · 29/07/2025 20:03

Yes it does here too in the SE. London felt chilly today and I regretted having sandals on

ExponentialDelivery · 29/07/2025 20:09

I don't mind, I like it being a bit cooler so you can do things outdoors without getting all hot and sweaty, it was too hot until a couple of weeks ago. The only thing I'm not keen on is the gradually shortening hours of daylight as I like being outdoors in the evenings and waking up in daylight. April/May is my favourite time of year.

LlynTegid · 29/07/2025 20:12

I am content with this weather. It is not unusual for late July.

DorothyWainwright · 29/07/2025 20:15

It's been nice in the SW. It sounds like the London and SE had a blip today.

Comedycook · 29/07/2025 20:15

I think it's the grey sky and dreariness that affects me more than the temp. I would like some blue sky!

Autumn is my favourite season. I can’t wait.

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2025 20:17

It’s nice for me as that hot spell we had made me feel ill, but it has gone grey lately.
I can deal with weather like this tbh although I know people like it hotter / sunnier.

NeverTrustaCherryTomato · 29/07/2025 20:17

The geese are on the move already here. Everything does feel a bit earlier than usual.

Autumn is my favourite season. I can’t wait.

It just makes me think of colds and coughs...as soon as I feel the air turn, I just know it's a matter of time before I get a cold...and that Christmas is on the horizon...shudder

Im in Scotland. I don’t remember it being so consistently warm during the summer for many years. Yes it’s a bit dull at times. But it’s warm, the sun does make an appearance, and it’s not raining. So nothing like Autumn to me.
Maybe when you’re more accustomed to bad weather you appreciate any improvement on the usual.

WFHmutha25 · 29/07/2025 20:20

Maybe you live near me op? Its been grey and rainy for a while now. I wonder if that's why I feel a bit down.

KateMiskin · 29/07/2025 20:20

I prefer this to the blistering heat.

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2025 20:21

People are saying the seasons are nuts at the moment and it does feel different. I like rain , we need more of that. It’s been fairly dry where I live.

CopperWhite · 29/07/2025 20:23

I completely agree! I can feel autumn in the air, it
feels like early September already. It’s depressing.

Definitely been a shift in the seasons. Blackberry bushes full already! Used to be September or October when I was a child (80s). Certainly not July! I remember blackberry picking at the end of August about 8-9 years ago, not this early though! And went for a walk last night and all the horse-chestnut trees had conkers on and the leaves were turning brown. I feel like we’ve fast forwarded to the end of September!?!?

Yamadori · 29/07/2025 20:27

The Japanese maple bonsai trees in my garden think so too. Until yesterday they were in their full summer plumage. I went out into the garden this morning to do some watering, and literally overnight there has been a very faint, but noticeable change in leaf colour. Just a hint of something that wasn't there yesterday. They are all different varieties and not all in the same part of the garden. They know. I don't know how they know, but they know. The length of daylight hours is all I can come up with.

rubicustellitall · 29/07/2025 20:28

Count me in to with the Autumn vibes..
Every year I winterize the house, change to thicker curtains, get warmer bedding out,you now all that jazz and I have had that urge all week. Its driving me crazy resisting the urge!! But resist I will ...
Its not even August and I feel like this with the nights slightly drawing in and the soft drizzle whats going on?!

Wow you sound organised... I'm far too lazy to change curtains with the seasons!

No, I can’t say the same! Still feels very much like summer.

We are in the north west and it’s been warm and mostly dry for a while now. I think we’ve only had a couple of rainy days since school broke up. Today was one of them, but it came out sunny by lunchtime.

Backtothebestbits · 29/07/2025 20:40

I’m sure it’s because summer is coming so early now that the seasons are all out of whack. Blackberries already ripe in July and it definitely feels like it has that autumn nip when I go out early for a run. I love it 😄 this is the perfect summer for me.

Blancheyo · 29/07/2025 20:42

Norfolk has been beautifully sunny these past few days. Beaches are full of people in bikinis swimming in the sea. Definitely not like autumn here.
