Terrified cat - emergency vet?

I have two cats who sadly don't get along - had them for 10 years and they mainly ignore each other and now and again fight, which mainly consists of sound and fury and not a lot else. Never been any injuries or blood drawn. It's a female torbie and ginger tom.

Tonight they had one of their spats which ended with the ginger making an awful noise like we rarely hear. The kind of growling they do when something unusual is happening or something's wrong. He lost control of his bowels on the stairs, which he's never done, then came in the kitchen panting with his lips dawn back. He's just gone to lie on the grass and is panting less but just seems shaken. No wounds that I can see but tongue sticking out a bit still. Do I need the emergency vet? I'm leaning towards yes.

No. He’s just stressed after the fight. It will pass - no need for vet which will only stress him out more and cost you £££ unnecessarily

So I've just carried him in from the garden and he did the growling again but didn't resist, so I do feel like he's hurt. It's been about half an hour now so surely if just stressed he'd be over it now but he's not. Didn't even look up when I called his name.

Please take your cat to the vet if he is still behaving like this.

Call the vet, at least for some advice. He could have had some sort of seizure.

Bananachimp · 28/07/2025 21:04

I would at least call the vet.

pinotnow · 28/07/2025 21:39

Sitting in the emergency vets now. He's no better. I don't understand, he was absolutely fine and now this.

I really hope he's okay, how worrying!

ninjahamster · 28/07/2025 21:54

Oh gosh, I hope he is ok. It does sound like he is in pain.

DoneitagainhaventI · 28/07/2025 22:15

Poor puss.
I hope he's OK.

RedNine · 29/07/2025 00:08

I hope he's seen soon and you can get him help. Poor boy.

Difficultppl · 29/07/2025 00:11

Is he ok? I’m so sorry :(

Eggybreadwithnuts · 29/07/2025 00:17

Sending hugs

purpleme12 · 29/07/2025 00:36

How is your cat?

pinotnow · 29/07/2025 00:40

He has fluid around heart/lungs. Lots of tests being done now and then an update and it sounds like a decision to be made in the morning. I feel sick. We go on holiday for two weeks tomorrow - just awful timing. It doesn't sound very hopeful. He was fine and then he wasn't.

OP posts:
RedNine · 29/07/2025 00:44

So sorry.

hepsitemiz · 29/07/2025 00:44

Oh Pinot, that’s awful. So sorry. And the timing…😑

Difficultppl · 29/07/2025 01:24

I’m so sorry, how awful.

purpleme12 · 29/07/2025 01:41

Oh no that's awful 😕😕

Is it from the fight? Or was that just a coincidence?

LoLotheYoYo · 29/07/2025 02:23

Oh no, @pinotnow, how awful for your lovely boy, and such terrible timing. Thinking of you and ginga boy xx

DoneitagainhaventI · 29/07/2025 03:23

Oh the poor soul.
I'm so soŕry OP.

phlossy · 29/07/2025 03:44

Maybe he was less tolerant of his sister as he was already poorly. Hoping for good news in the morning for you

pinotnow · 29/07/2025 04:38

So they say he has pneumonia and masses on his lungs. Not much info really and vet says prognosis is 'guarded'. I have to pick him up from emergency vet at 7.30 to go straight to my vet. But I'm supposed to be at work. I don't want him poorly and deteriorating while I'm away. But I cant pts just because we have a holiday?! What do I do? Fuck. There is no one close to me to properly help with this.

LoLotheYoYo · 29/07/2025 05:00

Oh heck. What were your plans for care of the cats while you're away?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 29/07/2025 05:18

Better that he doesn't deteriorate further and suffer more, hard as that is to consider. Animals don't show pain the way humans do and if he has developed pneumonia and has cancer, by the sound of things, then he's very unwell. I'm so sorry. They're part of the family and he sounds well loved.

pinotnow · 29/07/2025 05:20

Was going to be pet sitter who comes twice a day but ds's dad has agreed to have him in these circumstances. However, I'm thinking it might be best to say goodbye before we go, This is hideous. He was fine yesterday.
