Do you think that man really got called ‘space cowboy’ and ‘the gangster of love’?

… because I don’t. I think he made it up.

I was sitting on a beach in a deckchair today thinking of that song from the Levi’s advert, and wondering why people didn’t just laugh it him for telling lies.

Kneeslikethese · 27/07/2025 20:50

Well some people called him Maurice..

Jellychat · 27/07/2025 20:52

I bet that’s not true, either.

Wouldn't believe a word that came out of his mouth. He's an absolute joker!

Jellychat · 27/07/2025 20:54

… and then I was driving home from the beach and felt slightly panicked because I remembered that Lou Reed had ‘fed animals in the zoo’ on his ‘Perfect Day’.

Why was he doing that? And what was he feeding them?

A bucket of fish heads for the penguins? A raw steak for the lions? Was he a zookeeper going out with another zoo keeper? And did he take a shower before going to the movies?

I feel equally strongly about 'Die with a Smile'...

If the world was ending
I'd wanna be next to you
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I'd wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I'd wanna be next to you

No you bloody wouldn't, you'd be bloody terrified!!!!!

3luckystars · 27/07/2025 21:00

Pompatus of Love is not a thing either!

Joker

Tia247 · 27/07/2025 21:00

I bet he was doing her wrong as well.

3luckystars · 27/07/2025 21:02

Maybe he had a difficult name like Balonz and nobody could ever get it right.

3luckystars · 27/07/2025 21:03

That’s a lot of people getting him name wrong.

Queenage · 27/07/2025 21:04

And in similar vein, it’s outrageous to judge Deborah because her house was small

3luckystars · 27/07/2025 21:07

Yes but she also had wood chip on the wall, I wouldn't judge her, but would think that’s unusual in this day and age.

And woodchip was trendy in the 70’s

was Valerie really as cool as jazz on a summer’s day? And how cool is that?

Oh. I’ve just found this thread and can’t stop laughing. Classic Mumsnet!

In terms of what people were calling him: I remember seeing him on TOTP back in the day, and afterwards one of the presenters quipped, "He's a walker... He's a talker... He's a bit of a porker!"

Ah, those heady days of casual fat-shaming. Even back then I could hardly believe they'd said that.

I worry about Whitney Houston when she wakes up in World War 3 and is sleeping in Grand Central Station (but it’s ok because she’s sleeping with you).

There must be a whole dystopian novel’s worth of backstory in there that she has omitted to mention.

But at least he told her she was the cutest thing he ever did see and was lovey dovey, lovey dovey, lovey dovey all the time.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 27/07/2025 21:32

And he really loved her peaches

powershowerforanhour · 27/07/2025 21:36

Whilst watching the battle scenes in Master and Commander, I couldn't help but note that a cannonball actually travels faster than somebody slowly walking down a hall. Unless the film's military ballistics consultants really ballsed up the historical accuracy.

I haven’t seen this and can’t quite get a hold of the image? Was it just rolling about?
